1-13-02—- Anime Boston Convention Announced

From the release:

The New England Anime Society, Inc., a non-profit organization, and Anime On DVD (www.animeondvd.com) the Internet’s largest web site devoted to Japanese Animation on DVD, are pleased to announce Anime Boston 2003 (www.animeboston.com).

Anime Boston 2003 will be a three-day convention held April 18-20, 2003 at the historic Boston Park Plaza Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Adam Ferraro, convention chairman, stated that Anime Boston brings a fan-run anime convention to New England’s largest city.

“Japanese Animation (commonly referred to as “anime”) is a growing phenomenon in the United States, with sales of videos routinely ranking in the top charts. For a long time the New England region has lagged behind in gatherings of this type, and hopefully, with this convention things will start to change,” said Mr. Ferraro “We are all very excited to be a part of this.”

Anime Boston’s diverse programming schedule includes a masquerade contest, game shows, modeling contest, music video contest, art show, role playing, karaoke and more! Panel programming consists of fan panels as well as panels hosted by our guests of honor and special one of a kind panels found nowhere else. The video game program brings to attendees the Game Dungeon – over 5,000 square feet of dedicated gaming space. The video-programming track has three giant video rooms open until the early morning hours showing videos from the past, present and future. Moreover, there is a dedicated anime dealers’ room selling anime related merchandise.

The official convention hotel is the historic Boston Park Plaza Hotel, located right in the heart of beautiful downtown Boston. The New England Anime Society has negotiated a special room rate for the convention at $119.00 per night. This rate applies for either a single or a double room! Reservations can be made by calling the Boston Park Plaza central reservations office toll free (1-800-225-2008) or directly through The Boston Park Plaza reservation line (1-617-426-2600). You must mention Anime Boston to get the discount. A three-day pass for Anime Boston is $25.00 with registration before April 2002. Registration forms are available at the official convention web site: www.animeboston.com

1-12-02—- GMK Current Status

Thanks to Daniel:

“GMK continues to remain in the top ton, as of January 6 it was in 7 place, down from fifth. Even better, is boxoffice wise the film is doing very well. By December 30 (Dec 15 opening date) GMK had sold 1 million tickets—that is more than twice what the previous 2 films sold in a one month period, Toho had a celebration about it. Just this past week GMK was expected to exceed 2 million tickets sold, and Toho has said it expects to sell over 4 million tickets, the last film to do that was 1992’s GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA.I think its defintely safe to say Godzilla will continue to live on.

There is no word if Kaneko will be asked back for a follow up but I think Toho would be wise to do so. Nonetheless, G-Fan’s J.D. Lees says he will have some info on the possible content of the next film in the next issue of his fanzine. On the Monster Zero forums he posted a teaser about the next film being less fantasy oriented and with lots of monster. Check G-Fan for subscription information.

Keep your fingers crossed in the coming months as talks continue to bring GMK to theaters and GXM to the home video/DVD front.

The always great Club Tokyo has an excellent article on the year in toys and kaiju by site owner Richard Cox and contributor Bill Schneider. Based on a month long poll of collectors the article covers favorite new toys, companies, and resources–of which thanks for including Monster Zero in it. 🙂 Check it out today!”

Finally, audience reviews can be found at Cinescape.

1-12-02—- HLJ News

From the announcement:

Recently, increased customer traffic loads have been seriously impairing the performance of our web site. In particular, functions that require CGI scripts, such as the online status function, or ordering, or searches, are extremely slow, and sometimes don’t work at all.

We are working with our hosting service to install another server to share the loads as quickly as possible, and we expect that this will solve the problem. In the meantime, we ask your patience as you keep trying to get through. We’re aware of the trouble and working on it!

The irony here is that it’s all your support that’s causing the problem in the first place, so telling you to stop visiting our site would be the quickest solution. Of course, that would create other, far more serious side-effects!

Thanks to all, as always.

Bandai is planning a big campaign for Escaflowne’s video launch–on DVD only. The effort will include promotion at the July 4-7 Anime Expo in Long Beach, Calif., and cross-promotion with a new collector’s edition DVD box of all eight volumes of the Escaflowne TV series, which has aired on the Fox network.

“We’ll probably be offering various P.O.P. and ways for retailers to get involved in the success of the DVD release,” Chu said.

Bandai will release the Escaflowne movie on DVD in a standard edition and as a special edition including Dolby and DTS sound, interviews, production art and other features. The special edition package also will carry an exclusive CD with the soundtrack.

1-7-02—- Disney’s Treasure Planet – Anime Influences?

Daniel has submitted the following to our list:

I was reading an article at AICN last year where they were commenting that one of Disney’s newest animated features would generate even more controversy-over its similarity to an anime-than Atlantis did. It’s called Treasure Planet, and is basically a sci fi re-make of Treasure Island. Anyway, check out http://www.corona.bc.ca/films/mainFramed.html to see a couple of stills from the film and decide for yourselves whether it’s similar to anything you’ve already seen.

1-7-02—- Midnight Eye Profiles Spirited Away & More

From the official newsletter:

As 2002 kicks off, so does Midnight Eye. And how! We have a red hot exclusive in the shape of an interview with HAYAO MIYAZAKI, as well as a review of his anxiously awaited record-breaking new film SPIRITED AWAY! http://www.midnighteye.com

A talk with the master animator, fresh off his box office triumph. “It’s not me who makes the film. The film makes itself and I have no choice but to follow.” http://www.midnighteye.com/interviews/hayao_miyazaki.shtml

Movie of the Week: SPIRITED AWAY
Japan’s biggest-ever box office success, and deservedly so. Miyazaki’s SPIRITED AWAY (SEN TO CHIHIRO NO KAMIKAKUSHI) is another Ghibli marvel. http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/spiraway.shtml

Review: H STORY
In what might well have been one of the last films produced by the now-defunct Suncent Cinemaworks, director Nobuhiro Suwa shows exactly why things went wrong for the prestigious production house. http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/hstory.shtml

Review: SILVER
An oddity from Takashi Miike’s videography. Round-breasted women in wrestling uniforms duke it out with the yakuza. http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/silver.shtml

Coming soon:
Next week, Midnight Eye will reveal its favourite Japanese films of the past year, as well as offer a look back at the highs and lows of 2001. PLUS! Your chance to vote for your favourite Japanese film of 2001!
