Digitally restored for DVD and VHS, fans of all ages can now enjoy this lighthearted adventure story which Steven Spielberg once called “one of the greatest adventure movies of all time” (Toons Magazine).
Loosely based on French novelist Maurice Leblanc’s (1864-1941) Arsene Lupin: Gentleman Thief adventure stories; Lupin, an underworld version of Sherlock Holmes, is famous for swindling goods from the rich all around the world. First introduced in the late 1960s in a Japanese comic-book by Monkey Punch, the character Lupin III is the fictional grandson of LeBlanc’s famous Lupin character, a modern-day James Bond. Lupin III adventures became some of Japan’s most popular stories with three television series, five movies and numerous made-for-TV movies. The animated movie The Castle of Cagliostro, was the second movie featuring the Lupin character and was originally made in 1979. In addition, a Sony Playstation game of “Cagliostro” was released in January 1997 and film footage was used in an early 80s laserdisc-based arcade game called “Cliffhanger.”
In the film, master thief Lupin III, a.k.a. “The Wolf,” and his right-hand gunman, Jigen, are hot on the trail of a counterfeiter who swindled them. But when their search leads them to the fictional secluded European country of Cagliostro, they find far more than they bargained for. Lupin unwittingly attracts the attention of the nation’s mysterious monarch when he tries to help a damsel in distress escape the Count’s henchmen and in the process stumbles upon the key to finding the lost fortune of the Cagliostro clan.

3-24-00—- Interview – Kia Asamiya
Kia Asamiya made his professional manga debut in 1986 when his Vagrants story appeared in the February issue of Kadokawa-Shoten’s Computieku. His Silent Mobius manga was later published in the May issue of Computieku, the unique style, designs, and characterizations therein were highly recognized, launching him into the status as a fan-favorite manga artist in Japan, and now, worldwide. Silent Mobius has since spawned reprints in multiple languages, a manga prequel: Mobius Klein, two Anime movies, and more recently, an Anime TV series which is just recently being released in the U.S. by Bandai Entertainment.
In 1989, his Gunhed was published by Newtype 100% Comics, followed by Compiler published in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine in 1990. Compiler became instantly popular among fans, it’s sequel, Assembler was later published in 1993.
In September of 1990, Asamiya-sensei’s Dark Angel manga made it’s Japanese debut in Newtype, it’s revamped U.S. debut, will soon be forthcoming from Image Comics.
In 1995, Steam Detectives began running in Jump Comics, it was an instant hit, and was adapted it’s own Anime TV series. In 1997, his highly popular Martian Successor Nadesico debuted from Kadokawa, it has been adapted to a TV series, movie (released in the U.S. by ADV Films), and video games.
Mr. Asamiya is constantly breaking new ground as a creator, pushing the envelope of his artform. He’s currently being represented in the U.S. by Fanboy Entertainment and will be touring the U.S., appearing at several Anime Conventions this summer, he has already appeared as Guest Of Honor at Animazement in North Carolina, 2 weeks ago.
* A secial thanks to C.B. Cebulski of Fanboy Entertainment for arranging this interview between us and Asamiya-sensei *
Anime News Service: What are your current projects in the U.S. and Japan? What can fans expect to see hitting the market in the next 6 months.
– Kia Asamiya: I just wrapped up my first girls’ manga series, Corrector Yui, which I did for my daughter. My son got jealous though so now I am working on a new kids series called Ebiru-kun for him. My Batman manga will continue monthly as will Steam Detectives. Silent Mobius ended last year but may be back. My new series D-Divine, my “Japanese X-Men” is starting in Comic Gao this month. And of course, Dark Angel: Phoenix Resurrection in the U.S. from Image in May. I also have my second artbook, Venus, coming out the end of March. I will be doing several variant covers for American comics here in the U.S. as well.
There will also be a series of sketchbooks based on my individual manga and anime series published by Fanboy Comics. The first is Steam Detectives “Pushing Pencils” in May. I will also be including a lot of commentary on the sketches as well as sequential sketch art to give readers more of an insight into drawing manga. The Dark Angel sketchbook, from the old and new series, will be in June, followed by Silent Mobius in July.
C.B. Cebulski and I are also planning an entirely brand new manga series that will see publication in the States first, possibly next year, from Fanboy Comics.
ANS: Do you have any animation projects currently in-progress in Japan or any lined up for the near future? Could fans expect to possibly see a Dark Angel TV, OAV series or movie in the future?
– KA: I do not have any animation work lined up at this time. From now on I will only be working on anime based on my manga and characters. An animated Dark Angel project is a definite future possibility, one I hope will become a reality. I am hoping the new color Dark Angel: Phoenix Resurrection series will generate interest (and funding) in doing an animated version.
ANS: What are your impressions on U.S. fandom? How was the Animazement convention a few weeks ago?
– KA: I was impressed by the level of enthusiasm that U.S. fans have for manga and anime. It rivals that of Japanese fans. It actually caught me a bit off guard. Animazement was my first U.S. anime convention. I had only previously attedned comic conventions, like San Diego and Wizard World. I was surprised to see howe many fans were into “cos-play”. Also, I never expected so many people to attend my signings. I really like American fans. Not only are they extremely knowledgable and nice, they are so polite. I have had fans in Japan literally follow me into restrooms asking me for an autograph or a sketch. At Animazement, the fans treated me as an equal and respected my wishes and privacy. I felt I was just another fan, not a guest, as I could comfortably walk around the convention and talk to fans.
ANS: On the current exponential boom of Anime / Manga as a popular form of entertainment in the U.S., from a creator’s standpoint what are your views?
– KA: I think it is a positive thing. I really get a kick out of seeing Japanese anime on TV here in English. Japan has been so influenced by Western pop culture over the past few decades it is great to see some Japanese influence exerting itself here. This boom has opened up new doors for me here too. ANS: Finally, do you have any words to fans of your works reading this from around the world?
– KA: “Thank you.” comes to mind. The fans are the reason I do what I do. They are the reason I get up in the morning. They are the reason I keep creating. I appreciate their support and will strive to keep them entertained with new manga, anime and characters. As long as I know that there is still one fan out there who is enjoying my comics, I will never stop working. You have my appreciation.

3-23-00—- Animeigo Speaks On DVD
Statement posted to the Animeigo website Thursday afternoon:
Every day we get about a dozen emails asking “when will my favorite video be coming out on DVD?” It’s driving us nuts!
Folks, we’re working as hard as we can to get our products out on DVD at the level of quality you expect from AnimEigo. We spent over 6 months last year patiently working out ways to do DVD subtitles in the AnimEigo style — we even found bugs in one of the major DVD authoring systems that had to be corrected.
We now have two DVD authoring studios working on getting our titles out. One is working full time on Urusei Yatsura (and will also do some samurai films), the other is ramping up to release our other titles. Because we don’t want to make promises we later find we can’t keep, we aren’t even going to announce release dates on DVDs until the authoring is done, the packaging is ready, and all we have to do is send them off for replication.
The first DVD title that will be released is going to be the UY TV 1-5 box set. We are just going through our final paranoia checks and it should be sent to replication (and announced) around April 1 (appropriate for UY, don’t you think?).
Our second (new) authoring studio is hard at work on DVDs of Baoh and Spirit of Wonder. We know, it sounds like we are nuts, doing two of our less well-known titles first, but we want to start out with two simple titles to make it easier for the new studio to get up to speed with our style of subtitles, etc. That way, if any mistakes get past us, it won’t be a major problem. Once that’s done, we intend to release almost all of our catalog on DVD, roughly in order of popularity.
This means that you should expect to see us release titles like Bubblegum Crash, AD Police, Vampire Princess Miyu, Oh My Goddess, You’re Under Arrest, and KOR OVAs/Movie within the next year or so. We’re just not promising in which order, or exactly when. In addition, we’ll be releasing the Lone Wolf & Cub and Zatoichi samurai films on DVD, and it looks almost certain that sometime early in 2001 we will release KOR TV on DVD as well.
So please, be patient, check the website every so often to find out what’s new (or subscribe to AnimEigo-News, see below), and stop bugging poor Robert about the darn DVDs! If he cracks under the pressure, none of them will get released anytime soon!
3-23-00—- Anime / Manga Gaming
Capcom’s upcoming RPG serial-series, Emblem Of Eru, to be released bi-monthly for Dreamcast will unfold over 24 volumes starting this summer. The first chapter, Emblem Of Eur: El Dorado will contain 7 volumes of the whole series. Character designs for this game are provided by Yoshitaka Amano, with story written by Flagship. Each chapter will retail for 2800 Yen.
3-23-00—- Fanboy Entertainment Creates Publishing Division
Fanboy Entertainment announced on Tuesday the formation of its new publishing arm, Fanboy Comics. The division will begin operation this May.
“This is not an entirely unexpected move for us. I guess anyone could have seen it coming. It’s just another natural progression for Fanboy.”, comments Fanboy Entertainment’s C.B. Cebulski. “Starting with prints, posters and T-shirts helped us gain some exposure as well as establish a foothold in the market. More importantly, it allowed us to gauge fan reaction to our new company and to our products before we took the plunge into the somewhat uncertain comic market. We have been extremely pleased with the market and fan response to our products and have decided to expand into comics at this time.”
Fanboy Comics’ first project will be with manga artist Kia Asamiya. Fanboy and Asamiya’s Studio Tron have produced several projects together over the past few months including DARK ANGEL prints and T-shirts as well as the wildly popular STEAM DETECTIVES Ling Ling/ Lang Lang Lingerie Print Set. Fanboy Comics’ first publishing project will be a STEAM DETECTIVES sketchbook entitled Pushing Pencils.
“Pushing Pencils is a project that Mr. Asamiya is extremely excited about. He really enjoyed the Kia Asamiya Sketchbook that came out last year and wanted to take that idea and build upon it. He wants to do a series of longer, expanded sketchbooks for each of his individual manga and anime series.”, Cebulski explained. “Last month, Asamiya-sensei opened up his sketchbooks to us and we ran wild choosing images together. We were shooting for forty eight pages, but there are just too many gorgeous images and concepts that the fans just have to see! The STEAM DETECTIVES Pushing Pencils sketchbook will now clock in at sixty-four pages, packed with sketches and designs of the entire cast of STEAM DETECTIVES from the manga series, anime series and various toy lines. All your favorite characters will be there – Narutaki, Ling Ling, Lang Lang, Goriki, The Red Scorpion, The Phantom Knight, Shadow Bolt #1 and 2, and a few new surprises!”
Pushing Pencils will not just be an ordinary sketchbook, “Last year at Wizard World, Mr. Asamiya was shocked to see how many people showed up for his “How To Draw Manga” workshop. He had no idea that many people wanted to learn to draw manga! So here, with Pushing Pencils, he thought he would take the sketchbook concept and include commentary on and examples of some of the techniques and styles he uses when drawing manga. He will be reviewing all the sketches we have chosen and try to offer fans insight into each piece and the thought processes he uses when illustrating his manga. While it will not be an official “How To Draw Manga The Kia Asamiya Way” guide, it will feature sequential sketch art and give fans advice and instruction on some of the finer points of drawing manga from one of the best. And as an added bonus, Mr. Asamiya will be illustrating and coloring an original STEAM DETECTIVES cover just for the sketchbook.”
Pushing Pencils will be but the first in a series of Kia Asamiya sketchbooks. STEAM DETECTIVES Pushing Pencils will be a 64 page comic, available in May for $3.95. It will be followed in June by DARK ANGEL Sword Strokes, which will run 48 pages for $3.50 and include sketches and commentary on both the new and old DARK ANGEL manga series.
Fanboy Comics will be announcing their publishing plans for other manga and comic series with diverse creative teams in the weeks to come.
