7-24-03---- New ADV Films Releases

HOUSTON, July 23, 2003-ADV Films today announced an October 7, 2003 release date for Aura Battler Dunbine: The Kings of Byston Well, the third volume of the 49-episode anime classic.

First broadcast in Japan in the mid 1980's, Aura Battler Dunbine is widely considered one of the finest and most significant titles from the "golden age" of televised anime. Conceived by Yoshiyuki Tomino (creator and director of Gundam) and based on Tomino's novel Wings of Lin, Aura Battler Dunbine has long been celebrated not only for its exciting plot and extraordinary mecha designs (by Studio Nue, of Macross fame), but also for the series' emphasis on strong and detailed characterization, and the consistently excellent quality of its animation (produced by Sunrise Animation).

As befits the title's extraordinary production pedigree, Aura Battler Dunbine is a rich and complex tale, mingling a fantasy-inspired setting with an anachronistic blend of technologies, and spicing the mixture with extensive elements sourced from ancient folklore of the British Isles.

The Story: Show Zama and his comrades are witness to what seems to be the inevitable conquest of Byston Well by Drake Luft's massive army. Kingdom after kingdom falls as Bern Bunnings pushes Luft's troops closer and closer to a final showdown in the Land of Ah. Personal relationships are strained; while more mysteries are revealed as both good men and bad fall victim to the relentless appetite of war.

Aura Battler Dunbine is the stuff that legends are made of. An epic, one-of-a-kind adventure that dives headfirst into a rich, fully defined world to create one of the most unique anime experiences ever envisioned.

Aura Battler Dunbine: The Kings of Byston Well (SRP $29.98) is a DVD-only release, containing four complete episodes. Includes both English- and Japanese-language versions, with English subtitles. Extras include: a production portfolio; clean opening and closing animation; and ADV previews.

Collector's Edition Available! The special edition "Memorial Box," including the first volume of Aura Battler Dunbine: Tales of Byston Well and a high-quality ("hard") custom series art box, sized to hold the first six volumes of the series, is also available (SRP $39.98).

HOUSTON, July 23, 2003-ADV Films today announced an October 7, 2003 release date for Eden's Bowy: Fallen Angels and Flower Towns, fourth volume of the acclaimed anime fantasy series, noted for its multilayered complexity and wide-ranging appeal. Eden's Bowy is based on a manga by Tennoji Kitsune, and was directed by Tsukasa Sunaga (Southern Cross), with character designs by Kazui Hiroko (Ranma ½, Oh! My Goddess!).

The Story: After everything the old warrior has done, the Princess of Foresight has been snatched back into the hands of Yulgaha. Will Yorn and the rest of our heroes give up? No way! When the going gets tough, the tough pack their bags for Yulgaha! But dangers await Yorn and his companions-they fall off Yulgaha and go crashing to the earth below and then are captured and dragged off to the Yanuess-controlled city of Chanaccare.

Will Goldoh and Vilogg find their precious cargo in the maze-like forest of Yaokeshipu-or will they strangle each other first? What angelic tragedy transformed Spike into the angry God Hunter we see today? And who is the mysterious Parella, and where do her loyalties lie?

Eden's Bowy: Fallen Angels and Flower Towns (SRP $29.98) is a DVD-only release, including four complete episodes. Includes both English- and Japanese-language versions, and English subtitles. Extras include: clean opening and closing animation; and ADV previews.

Produced by Pony Canyon (Vampire Princess Miyu), WOWOW (The Big O) and Kadokawa (publishers of anime magazine Newtype), Steel Angel Kurumi features breathtaking animation from acclaimed studio O.L.M., famous for its work on the Pokemon franchise. The English dub of Steel Angel Kurumi 2 reprises the smashing performances of three of the leads from the first series: Kelli Cousins, Monica Rial and Hilary Haag, plus a host of other fine voice actors.

The Story: Now that Kurumi and Saki are in the 21st century, aren't they forgetting something? That's right! Believing the Steel Angels are the only ones who can save the human race from destruction, the Practitioners have awakened their sassy younger sister, Karinka, to capture them.

7-22-03---- Tokyopop Comic-Con Releases

Comic-Con, San Diego, CA (July 18, 2003)?Further solidifying its position as the leading U.S. manga publisher, TOKYOPOP Inc. is pleased to announce the addition of Macross 7 Trash to its 2004 manga release schedule. The legendary and complex Macross universe is seminal in the history of anime and manga. There have been thousands of Macross TV anime episodes, movies, manga volumes, toys, and videogames, spanning multiple distinct series. Macross—which was released worldwide by Harmony Gold—recently celebrated its 20th Anniversary and is known to many television viewers as Robotech.

One of the most popular incarnations of this franchise is Macross 7. The fan-favorite Macross 7 Trash manga is known as a side-story to the anime—set in the same world, but featuring different themes, characters and tone. Created by Mikimoto Haruhiko (Gundam 0080, Orguss), Macross 7 Trash features a complex, layered, character-driven narrative that adds immeasurably to the overall richness and diversity of the Macross experience. The story was originally serialized in Japan’s Shounen Ace magazine from 1994 to 2001.

“TOKYOPOP looks forward to not only sharing this compelling series with its existing fanbase here in America, but also to introducing a whole new audience of readers to Macross 7 Trash,” said the company’s President & COO John Parker.

Comic-Con, San Diego, CA (July 17, 2003) Top U.S. manga publisher TOKYOPOP Inc. and Courtney Love have announced their collaboration on an original project fueled by the singer/songwriter’s passion for manga. The shojo fantasy manga series—Princess Ai—will feature the character design of famed manga-ka Ai Yazawa (Paradise Kiss) and the creative vision of D.J. Milky (Karma Klub).

Princess Ai is the story of a smart and talented, yet controversial young woman who utilizes the public stage not only for self-expression but also to hide from her assailants. She is the princess of a mysterious, unknown land, who has escaped to our world and is now taking refuge in the bustling nightclubs of Kabushiki-cho.

“I have always loved the Japanese culture and the people. Princess Ai is a great character because she feels like my alter-ego, but in a fantasy setting,” said Love. “I’m very excited to work with TOKYOPOP, a company that is truly innovative in its approach towards crossing creative boundaries.”

With a new album, America’s Sweetheart, debuting on October 28th on Virgin Records and a tour to follow in November, Love plans to encompass Princess Ai imagery into various phases of her music—both live and recorded video. Additionally, both Yazawa and Milky have been working with Love’s lyrics to build the story and its dialogue. The series is slated for a 2004 release.

“We are very pleased that we could team up with one of the most influential rock stars of our generation and certainly one of the most colorful personalities,” said TOKYOPOP CEO & CCO, Stuart Levy. “Manga is just the start. Look for animation projects, merchandise and other evolutions of Princess Ai in the near future.”

Comic-Con, San Diego, CA (July 18, 2003)?Leading U.S. manga publisher TOKYOPOP Inc. has just added seven new titles to its already-impressive 2004 lineup. With topics that range from invading amphibians to the turmoil of love, these exciting series promise fans a wide range of delightful reads. Sgt. Frog, Ai Yori Aoshi, Faeries’ Landing, Snow Drop, Kill Me Kiss Me, Les Bijoux and Ghost! are manga series you won’t want to miss. Read on…

Sgt. Frog: Keroro Gunsou (Comedy) The creative vision of Mine Yoshizaki (Arcade Gamer Fubuki), this hilarious story first gained recognition serialized in Kadokawa’s #1 boys’ manga magazine. Meet Sergeant Keroro. As Captain of the Space Invasion Forces Special Advance Team of the 58th Planet of the Gamma Storm Cloud System, he’s been sent to the planet Pokopen (aka Earth) to collect intelligence for his invasion force. He’s armed… he’s on a mission… and did we mention he’s a frog? It’s invasion of the weird in this wacky comedy hit!

Ai Yori Aoshi (Romance / Comedy) Kou Fumizuki’s Ai Yori Aoshi poses the ever-asked question: does love truly conquer all? The daughter of a traditional family, Aoi has always known that she would marry into money. Her parents planned it that way. She even knows her future husband Kaoru—the heir to an enormous fortune—and has loved him since they were children. Roadblock! Kaoru has been disowned, and now, despite her family’s protests, Aoi wants to marry him anyway. What obstacles must the two overcome in order to be together?

Faeries’ Landing (Comedy / Fantasy) From You Hyun comes this delightful manga that takes a comical and rather imaginative look at dating. Welcome to Faeries’ Landing, a place where the real world and the Faerie realm collide. Like most people, 16-year-old Ryan doesn’t realize that supernatural beings descend on his town at night, but when this shy guy stumbles upon a grounded faerie, he suddenly finds himself her guardian. The good news: she’s a hottie. The bad news: she’s read his fortune, and his love-life is doomed.

Snow Drop (Romance) This moving, dramatic story was created by Choi Gyung-ah (Akashic Records). Like a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, Snow Drop is about two star-crossed teens who fall madly in love, despite the odds against them. Sana was kidnapped and raped as a child, but she is trying to put that experience behind her. When she meets Hayden in high school, they instantly click and fall in love. However, a dark secret from their past threatens to tear them apart. New TOKYOPOP® Manga July 18, 2003 Page 2

Kill Me Kiss Me (Romance / Drama) Created by Lee Young Yuu (Pastel Green Spell), Kill Me Kiss Me is a charming tale of adolescent angst. Smitten with teen idol star Kun Kung, Teyon Ihm dreams of one day meeting the famous model and, perhaps, marrying him. Of course, she knows it’s just a silly pipe dream and would never even think of an encounter, much less a tryst, coming to pass. Cross-gender hijinks and madcap hilarity surround this tender story of one girl’s pursuit of true love.

Les Bijoux (Fantasy / Adventure) Literally French for “The Jewels,” this fascinating manga was written by Jo Eun-Ha and illustrated by Park Sang-Sun. Its story takes readers into a world of sharply drawn class structures called Mines where “Habits” exist to rule and “Spars” exist to serve. Their future dim and seemingly set in stone, the Spars find hope in an unlikely hero—the androgynous child born of a dwarf and hunchback.

Ghost! (Romance / Drama) Shuri Shiozu has penned this bizarre and touching story about Mitsuo Shiozu, a lonely high school student whose psychic abilities turn his body into the channel for a pair of female ghosts. These deceased former classmates use Mitsuo to deliver their otherworldly messages while putting him in some awkward situations.

7-22-03---- Dreamworks Bails From 2D Animation Production

From the 7/21 IMDB Studio Brief courtesy Daniel:

Saying that the studio is "extremely disappointed" by the poor box-office performance of Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, DreamWorks animation chief Ann Daly has told the New York Times that the film will be the studio's last hand-drawn animation feature. Sinbad, which reportedly cost $70 million to produce, has earned only $23.3 million since its opening on July 2. DreamWorks principal Jeffrey Katzenberg, who built his reputation by supervising some of Disney's biggest animation hits, suggested that the conventional "2-D" form of animating movies may now be obsolete. "I think the idea of a traditional story being told using traditional animation is likely a thing of the past," he told the Times.

7-22-03---- Shonen Jump Additions

July 17, 2003 (San Francisco, CA)

VIZ, LLC, is proud to announce the acquisition of two new titles in The SHONEN JUMP graphic novel line, Rurouni Kenshin and Hikaru no Go making their debut in the Graphic Novel format. Fans will be able to get a sneak peek into Rurouni Kenshin through SHONEN JUMP Magazine and Hikaru No Go will be serialized in SHONEN JUMP magazine beginning in January, its anniversary issue. Bringing the most action-packed, popular titles directly from Japan, these two new titles will garner much press and consumer excitement with the launch of the first graphic novel as early as November 2003. Look for another exciting announcement in August as we announce our acquisition of an eagerly awaited title.

Rurouni Kenshin

One of the biggest manga hits of the 1990s, Rurouni Kenshin is set in Japan during the late 1800s and brings this remarkable period of Japanese history to life. It is the Meiji Restoration, and the feudal system separating the classes has ended. By law, the samurai must give up their swords – symbols of their traditional power – but a few still resist the changing times. In Japan, the accumulated sales for all volumes combined for Rurouni Kenshin was 4.5 million copies. Currently airing on Cartoon Network, Creator Nobuhiro Watsuki’s first series, Rurouni Kenshin ran for 28 volumes in Japan. Translated in 14 countries worldwide, this is the first time the manga will be translated into English, but the anime TV, movie and OAV series are available in English, sometimes under the title Samurai X. Fans will be able to see a sneak preview of the series in the November issue of the SHONEN JUMP Magazine (on sale October 7, 2003).

Hikaru No Go

The latest hit game among Japanese students has nothing to do with cards or magical beatss. In fact, it’s not even a new game, but one that used to be associated with old folks. How did it get to be so popular? Simple: It has really cool manga! Currently at 18 volumes, Hikaru No Go (The Go of Hikaru) has been hitting the top of Japan’s manga sales charts for several years. The series is a team effort, written by Yumi Hotta and drawn by Takeshi Obata, with young go master Yukari Umezawa as technical advisor and Japan’s National Go Association as their willing supporters. The rest is a unique gaming comic that has resurrected the popularity of this traditional Chinese strategy game (superficially similar to Othello). In Japan, the latest volume of Hikaru (vol. 23) sold 830,000, and altogether (from Vol. 1 to 23) has sold 21 million to date. It's also been translated in 7 different countries.

This series will be making its debut as a serialization in the January issue of the SHONEN JUMP Magazine, to replace Sand Land that ends in the November issue.

7-21-03---- Metrocon Stats

Thanks to Jay for the following:

Over 1,650 people attended Metrocon in Tampa, FL, over the weekend, according to event organizers, giving it a higher attendance than any other first year anime convention in Florida ever. In fact, organizers were surprised and jubilated at the high figure, expecting somewhere less than half that. This bodes well for next year's event, especially taking into consideration the wide demographics displayed in con goers.

Next year the event will most likely move to a larger venue in order to accommodate both the expected larger crowds and newly planned events that will take up large areas. Information about the con can be found at www.metroconventions.com.

7-21-03---- Metrocon Coverage

A hearty thanks to Jay who was at this past week's Metrocon event near Tampa:

This is just a quick update from METROCON 2003 in Tampa, FL. This is the first year for the con, and the first anime-focused convention in Tampa. Just walking through the dealers room and the lobby, the most surprising aspect of the con is the wide-ranging demographics of the attendees. Con goers seemed relatively evenly split between male and female, every ethnic group was well represented, and the age range was from pre-teens to grandparents. There were several families strolling around, often in costume.

There were 4 video rooms with continuous showings of many recent series such as Last Exile, Spiral, Witch Hunter Robin, and a very funny 7 by Seven. Saturday panels included a nice ADV voice actor group (with an excellent Excel Saga-style death with vomit acted out by Monica Rial, the voice actress for Hyatt in the dub) and a hilarious live commentary by the voice actors on Full Metal Panic and RahXephon to a packed crowd. Surpringly, one of the most heavily attended events was the "Eight simple rules for convention cosplaying" presented by Wasabi Anime, a Florida alliance of anime clubs. The J-pop video room and videogame salon were also packed.

There is also a significant number of cosplayers at the con representing both anime and games (I have to say my favorite is a Belldandy in her battlesuit from the movie - the costume looks amazingly professional). The event is surprisingly well organized for a first year event, and the entire staff deserves some praise. The diverse demographics and excellent presentations leads me to believe next year will see a massive increase in attendance.

I'll have interviews with Monica Rial, Christopher Patton, and Luci Christian later in the week, and a representative from AN Entertainment regarding their entry into the US anime market, as well.

7-18-03---- Anime-niacs

St. Petersburg Times has a great article on Anime fans in the Tampa area and a leadup to this weekend's Metrocon.

7-17-03---- Sega And Bandai Teaming On New Macross PS2 Title

In the latest issue of Famitsu...Sega-AM2 and Bandai revealed that they're codeveloping a PlayStation 2 game based on the popular anime Macross. ...The new game, Chou-jikuu Yousai Macross, is a 3D shooter currently being developed by the members of the AM2 team responsible for the Aero Dancing series. The title will be published by Bandai, which requested that Sega work on the game after seeing the potential of Sega's Aero Dancing engine. The controls in the game will not be as complicated as those in Aero Dancing, but there will be additional controls that advanced players can use.

In Chou-jikuu Yousai Macross, players will take control of the Valkyrie plane and fight against the Zentraedi army. Much like in the original anime, the Valkyrie can transform into three different modes: fighter, gerwalk, and battloid. Each mode has different abilities. For example, the fighter is fast and can fire missiles rapidly, while the gerwalk can hover over the ground while shooting missiles. The battloid mode can't shoot missiles but has a laser cannon to shoot down enemy fire. The developers said that they are aiming to create the ultimate Macross game, and will not make a game that just relies on its license.

Chou-jikuu Yousai Macross is scheduled for release in October in Japan. The title is currently 70-percent percent complete.
