The theater-exclusive Godzilla 2002 (Kiryu-Goji) turned out to be pretty popular in Japan, as opposed to the lackluster performance of recent theater figures. And when you combine exclusive figures, a demand, and production in China, you're bound to get a bootleg; or in this case, many, many boots...(Details at Club Tokyo )

Last week, for the first time ever, more DVDs were rented than VHS videocassettes, the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) reported today. According to VSDA VidTrac, 28.2 million DVDs were rented during the week ending 6/15/03, while 27.3 million VHS cassettes were rented. "Home video is the most popular way for Americans to watch movies, rental is the most popular home video option, and now DVD is the most popular rental format," noted VSDA President Bo Andersen. "Video renters are attracted to the quality, convenience, and special features of DVD."
Anime fans may be particularly interested in the above news following reports originating in the Japanese press (specifically The Daily Yomiuri) from 3 years ago that Lucasfilm was to possibly co-produce a 30-minute animated feature with animation start-up Anime World Osaka. To be titled "Chiisana Yosei Mirun" (The tiny fairy Mirun), the animation was reported to run in U.S. theaters and air as a 30-minute television series in Japan. The Osaka-based firm was to produce original pictures (designs) for the project and provide production capital (estimated at 2 billion Yen) which Lucas Film would then animate. The Star Wars director himself was reported to serve as executive producer on Mirun.

On December 24th at 2007 at 0 hours and 0 minutes, The World went online…you entered to play, but something went wrong…Now, you are just trying to get out…
(June 19, 2003) Decipher is proud to announce it has acquired the license from Bandai Entertainment Inc.to produce an all-new trading card game based on the latest anime phenomenon to come out of Japan: Project .hack (pronounced “dot hack”). The TCG, .hack//ENEMY, will be introduced in stores throughout North America this October.
Conceived as a multimedia project from the start, the .hack phenomenon includes an anime series and a first-ever on PlayStation 2: an episodic video game series delivered in 4 double-disc parts, as well as a manga series, using the innate narrative abilities of each unique medium to tell a different part of the entire .hack saga. All elements of the .hack narrative are hugely popular in Japan already and have now also laid claim to American youth culture .
The anime TV series, .hack//SIGN, is telecast on Cartoon Network Saturday evenings during its popular block of action-adventure programming and has quickly become one of the best selling anime DVD releases of the year. The first episode of the Playstation 2 game —.hack//INFECTION — is expected to reach Sony’s Greatest Hits status within the year; and the manga series— .hack//Legend of the Twilight , according to industry experts is destined to do extremely well in U.S. pop culture shops when it debuts this September.
In recreating the .hack universe for the tabletop gaming community, Decipher introduces an exciting and fast-paced game system, combined with an organized play environment t hat will immerse the players in The World, just as the fictional roleplaying community would do. Within The World, you try to beat your opponent from the perspective of the monsters attacking and killing your opponent’s characters. Only in .hack//ENEMY will you experience The World from the point of view of the monsters and mysterious AI entities corrupting the system.
As you accumulate enough Victory Points to win the game, you are simultaneously trying to stop your opponent from beating you to the punch. And in an innovative feature that captures the feel of the massive online roleplaying game, a unique tournament structure allows players to collect experience points to “level up” their abilities and gameplay experiences. As you gain experience and levels through the organized play system, you increase your ability to gain access to exciting and exclusive gameplay.
As the emerging graduation game for anime TCG players, the strategy is deep and challenging, while the rules are still simple and easy to learn, It’s the perfect game for those who want more in an anime-based TCG, but are not looking for the complexity and rules of games such as The Lord of the Rings TCG and Star Trek CCG Second Edition . Early playtesters call the shuffle-and-play game style of .hack “fast with a high fun factor.” You can easily play a match of two or three games in less than an hour.
This fall confront the world of .hack yourself by picking up this revolutionary new TCG from Decipher. It will test you, captivate you and engulf you…but don’t let it destroy you. Welcome to The World…
Experience .hack//ENEMY Trading Card Game this summer during the convention season. Demos will be unleashed at the following gaming and anime conventions:

"Cartoon Network globally has in fact set aside an amount of $500 million over a period of five years for the creation of original animation..."
Article #2 also from Indian TV focuses on Nickelodeon Asia who has just announced three executive promotions, one of those being Hitomi Nagakaki's transfer to account director, network development and marketing. According to the piece, Nagkaki has
..." contributed significantly to Nickelodeon's cable and satellite distribution growth in the past two years in Japan."
"...she has successfully guided the channel's acquisition of important Japanese animation series and marketing campaigns to boost awareness for Nick in the Japanese market. An ex-employee of producers of Japanese animation feature film Rex Entertainment, Hitomi is currently based in Tokyo and will also be reporting to Cunningham. "
"The manga boom could well pave the way for Japanese literature to become better known abroad," said Masahiro Takano, president of TranNet KK, a Tokyo publishing and translation service.
Contiuning several recent manga business successes are cited, including Shogakukan /Shueisha's USA intro of Shonen Jump and hopefuls like the Kodansha / Random House venture announced in January and Vertical Inc. (mentioned yesterday on ANS) who is planned to recieve an investment injection of $600,000 this year by Japanese trading firm Itochu Corp..
As many may recall ANS first introduced the online world to L.A. based DOMO Records via our Exclusive Interview published in May 2002. In that instance we conveyed the then-pending release of Metropolis Oiginal Soundtrack. This summer DOMO is back with music from one of the most highly anticipated anime releases in recent times: Ninja Scroll TV. Due in stores August 26th (just days before the 9/2 DVD release from Urban Vision) the CD will feature the accompaning score to the 13-episode Ninja Scroll TV series which made its debut earlier this year in

Ninja Scroll is the story of a wandering Ninja warrior named Jubei.
The music for this soundtrack is co-scored by Golden Globe & Grammy Award
winning artist Kitaro and multi-instrumentalist and composer, Peter
