Multimedia 2000 today officially confirmed weeks of rumors and furtive backalley whispers and announced that, yes indeed, big doings were certainly afoot with the Bubblegum Crisis DVD series. The anticipation, which began last week in the AnimEigo newsletter and continued at this past weekend's anime funfest SakuraCon in Washington State, revolved around the long-awaited remastering of the three-disc, eight-episode Bubblegum Crisis DVD series, but soon grew to include word of a "mysterious fourth disc," which set the Bubblegum universe a-buzzing.
On Friday, March 31, Multimedia 2000 convened in chambers to consult with the Peabody-award nominated personnel of DVD development group FATDisc. Detailed schedules were laid out for the BGC remastering and extension.
The remastering project was prompted by a slightly flawed Japanese soundtrack, the result of an unforeseen interaction of Dolby sound reduction technology with the creation of a digital audio master, some subtitle synching issues, and playback bugs seen on certain makes and models of DVDplayers and DVD-ROM drives. All of these technical issues are slated for repair.
But what of this mysterious fourth disc, I hear you asking. Well, unfortunately we can't spill those particular beans just yet, but we can tell you the fourth disc will feature the DVD debut of several BGC-related items fans have been clamoring for. This fourth disc will be available individually as well as part of an incredible new Bubblegum box set.

This DVD collects all six volumes of the anime series, previously released on three VHS volumes by Viz Communications, and also contains the previously unreleased Japanese language version with English subtitles. Westfield price $31.50
- Jerry Chu of Bandai Entertainment mentioned that the Escaflowne movie, will be shown at this year's Otakon Comvention, as well as the aformentioned Anime Expo screening.
- Representitives from Multimedia 2000, the productive team behind the remastering of Animeigo's Bubblegum Crisis DVD's said that the upcoming box set release, will feature 4 DVD's, they would however, not say what the fourth DVD contains, and it's contents are to be a surprise. Individual DVD's will also be sold as opposed to purcasing the discs as a set. I just got off the phone with Mr. Kevin Kasha, Executive VP of Home Video for Miramax Films. He said that the release date is now not June 13, but an undetermined later date during the summer of 2000. I asked about the features of the DVD and he said those were not nailed down yet, either, and that I should contact him again in a couple of weeks to find out what they have decided. Apparently, he and his group were in a meeting this morning to work out these issues, and they are working hard to pin down dates and features as soon as possible.
After an unfortunate delay, M-2K has told me that they are about to start remastering the BGC DVD.
In preparation for this, they are checking their list of confirmed bugs. It would be great if those of you with the DVD could check their bugs page and report anything they don't have listed:

Written by J. Torres and illustrated by Takeshi Miyazawa, 'Sidekicks' features two formidable talents brought together for this project. In such earlier successes as 'Siren' and 'The Copybook Tales', Torres' combination of easy, approachable dialogue created individuals that are incredibly believable. In 'Sidekicks', Torres plays with themes grown from a rich Silver Age stock of teen hero comics, and aims to bring back the familiar smell of that cafeteria along with some new contemporary twists in the genre.
Takeshi Miyazawa's manga stylings of incredible lines, innovative perspective and eclectic mix of western visual storytelling with Japanese design aims to produce a clean product that draws the reader into a world of modern day situations placed in fantastic futurism.
Originally a concept showcased in the debut issue of the anthology series Love in Tights, the 'Sidekicks' universe now expands under the editorial direction of C.B. Cebulski. "I loved the concept of Sidekicks from the moment they mentioned it to me. I've known J. for a while now and have long respected his storytelling ability. His strength lies in his characterizations, especially capturing the teen frame of mind. I was hooked after reading the initial SIDEKICKS proposal. It takes the concept of "teen heroes learning to cope with their powers" and turns it on its ear. J. had introduced me to Takeshi about two years back and one look at his work blew me away. Over the past few years, "manga style" artists have become a rather big deal. But Takeshi is the REAL deal! He knows just how to do it and do it right. And while most artists are only able to capture the look of manga, Takeshi's art also captues the feel of manga with its pacing and fluidity.", Cebulski comments. "Whereas J. can capture the true feelings and emotions of the characters and bring them to life, Takeshi is able to capture their style and look and make them seem real. J. doesn't have the kids do or say things they shouldn't or wouldn't. Takeshi doesn't put them in overexaggerated poses or goofy costumes. Their work compliments each other by bringing a sense of realism to the book."
A free eight page 'Sidekicks' Preview Edition will appear in the April 12th issue of Diamond Dateline.
