4-15-00---- New Vampire Hunter D Movie Completed

Excerpted from a recent post to the Urban Vision website:

The new Vampire Hunter D movie is completely finished, and now, as of 4/12/00, we are still working to get the dubbed version (which was completed before the Japanese version) out in theaters. Since we really want to give the new film the kind of backing it deserves, we are currently negotiating sale of the script to another studio, or a partnership, or coming up with a budget to release it in theaters ourselves. All this is strictly hush-hush, so our apologies, but you'll have to wait until we confirm everything before we can post any info on the website!

4-15-00---- Anime / Manga Gaming

- Banpresto's upcoming Dreamcast SD Gundam title, Super Hero Avengers has had it's release delayed until July.

In Japan, Sony's PlayStation2 console and 8-megabyte memory card it comes with have reportedly been designated as ''general-purpose products related to conventional weapons'' under the foreign exchange control law, due to the fact that they contain components that can be used for military applications+devices.

4-14-00---- Kia Asamiya Working On Batman Manga

Manga artist / creator, Kia Asamiya, is also working on a black-and-white Batman manga in Japan titled Child of Dreams. The manga is running monthly in Kodansha's Magazine Z and is the first original Batman comics series to be published in Japan. "In it, a Japanese news crew travels to Gotham to report on the mysterious legend of the Batman. And of course they end up running right into him," Cebulski said. "So far, in the series, Batman has encountered Two Face, the Penguin, the Riddler and the Joker, but none are the real deal. There is a new drug circulating through Gotham that makes average citizen think they are these villains from Batman's rogues gallery. Bruce Wayne has also taken an interest in the Japanese female reporter Yuko Yagi."

"But as for its Japanese format, it will continue running monthly in Magazine Z in Japan for 10 more months, 14 parts in all. It will clock out at around 400 pages total," he said. "It is scheduled to be collected into two 200-page editions in Japan as well. It is taking place in Gotham now but his investigation into the drug takes Batman to Japan halfway through the story in Part 8.

"The first Japanese collected edition, the Gotham Collection -- might not be the actual title but that is what we are calling it -- will collect parts 1-7 where Batman is still in Gotham. It should be released later this year. The second edition, the Toyko Collection, will collect the second half of the story, chronicling Batman's adventures in Tokyo. Due in late 2001 probably."

4-10-00---- Anime Festival In Long Beach

Carpenter Center Gears Up for 1st Annual Japanese Animation Festival

The World Premiere of Peter Chung's Alexander the Great shares the festival spotlight with Miyazaki's classic The Castle of Cagliostro and the powerful Grave of the Fireflies

Japanese Animation gets big screen treatment on Friday and Saturday, April 21-22, when the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center hosts its first annual Japanese Animation Festival. The festival schedule runs through a wide variety of anime styles, creators and content, offering something for every anime lover.
Festival artistic director Carl Macek (of Streamline Pictures) has put together a kind of primer package complete with harder core features and a world premiere on Friday night, and a Saturday lineup which begins the some of anime's original "kiddie fare" and finishes with the one-two punch of the thought-provoking and visceral Grave of the Fireflies followed by the midnight magic of Petshop of Horrors. In between the main screenings in the Carpenter Center's 1000+ hall, video monitors in the lobby will screen various anime series. There will also be several vendors selling anime-related merchandise, along with plenty of free catalogues and special door prizes.
One of the highlights of the festival is sure to be the world premiere of Alexander the Great from animator Peter Chung. Chung is well-known for his work in American commercials, as a director for Rugrats and other top-rated animated series, and as the creator of MTV's Aeon Flux. His Alexander effectively combines elements of the past, present and future, creating an imaginative vision of history that melds into myth. It's a blending of historical fantasy, sword and sorcery, and science fiction. This screening is a bit of a cliff-hanger, and is sure to leave the viewers anxious to see more of this brand new series. Scheduled to screen with Alexander are Wicked City, a classic anime horror film, and Roujin Z, a social satire complete with nubile nurse, an animatronic bed gone berserk and a senior citizen as the stories main character.
Saturday's schedule begins with a focus on the kinder, gentler anime from the 1960s.
- more - Page 2 - 2 - 2 Japanese Animation Festival Carpenter Center April 21-22

The original pilot episodes Astro Boy, Gigantor and Kimba the White Lion will be shown on the Carpenter Center's big screen beginning at noon that day. Fred Ladd, the gentleman who helped engineer anime's entry into the United States, will be on hand to introduce each pilot. These screenings will be proceeded by a special screening of perennial child favorite, Catnapped! At 2pm, the festival will screen a sampler of titles from Bandai, including Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Wing and Escaflowne. At 4pm, Miyazaki's classic The Castle of Cagliostro screens, followed by Armitage III: Poly-Matrix, with dubbed voices by Kiefer Sutherland and Elizabeth Berkley.
Grave of the Fireflies, a powerful and touching film of survival and pride set in the latter part of World War II, will be shown at 10pm. Though not by Miyazaki, the movie is a product of his Studio Ghibli, and certainly shows his influence. To complete the festival, the recently-released Pet Shop of Horrors, screens at midnight on April 22. A variety of Anime-related vendors, screening areas and activities will be available both Friday and Saturday surrounding the screenings. Tickets to individual festival screenings are $7 for the general public; $5 for students, children, seniors, those with CSULB ID and members of the Carpenter Center Cinema Society. One and two-day passes are available and range in price from $10-$30.

A special screening of SPE / Production I.G.'s Horror Action film Blood was held Thursday night at Sony's studios in Los Angeles, California. Kudoh Yuki, the voice of the female lead character, Saya was in attendance there, as was the director of Blood, Hiroyuki Kitakubo, the musical score producer person, and others involved in the project.

Blood is about a young woman named Saya, a hunter. She works with the U.S. military, slaying "demons" who feed on humans. The "demons" have been feeding on humans around the Yokota military base in Japan, and covering up their deaths by making them look like they committed suicide. Saya's assigned to enroll in the school on the military base to slay demons there.

Animation in Blood is fully Computer aided, 2D scan-cels, 3D models, CG effects and other techniques are used. Voice acting is in English & Japanese. Kudoh Yuki delivers lines in both languages, since her character Saya speaks both fluently.
