Anime On DVD is reporting Matt Greenfield of ADV reportedly listed both the Sakura Wars TV series and Sakura Wars OVA 2 as licensed by their company in a Sakura Con panel followup.
...with the writers strike looming, I am madly trying to finish writing some additional material for a very cool Polish/Japanese film called AVALON, so am spending all my time in my hotel room playing and replaying the video of the film and making notes and writing bits.
Irwin’s new 12” figures, Future Trunks and Tien, are now available at toy stores nationwide. Both figures are ultra-posable, and have real cloth outfits. The figures come in window boxes, and retail for $19.99-$27.99.
Takara has announced three more sets of show-exclusive G1 Transformer reissues. The additional sets include: Ramjet, Thrust and Dirge Inferno and Grapple Trailbreaker and Hoist Unfortunately, since these are Japanese toy show exclusives, they will be extremely hard and expensive for US residents to obtain.
Optimus Prime, leader of the heroic Autobots, is now immortalized in this new 1/8 scale cold-cast resin bust, designed and sculpted by Raven Hood! The bust itself is 6”, and is approximately 8.75” tall with the base. This is the first in a series of statues and busts, with a bust of Megatron, the leader of the evil Decepticons, planned as the next release. The bust is available through the May 2001 issue of Previews and carries a price tag of $49.99.
A manga series based on the j-pop idol group, Morning Musume, is going to start in the June 2001 issue of Nakayoshi (Kodansha). The manga title will be called "Musume. Monogatari," and it will be drawn by Kamisaki Yutaka. The Mini-Moni (a sub-group of Morning Musume) already has a manga series running in the magazine Shogaku 2-nensei (2nd Grader).
Kaiyodo's new Trigun figure, Money The Gail can be viewed at the link.
Figures.com Gainax's popular anime series has been keeping oversea toy company Kaiyodo very busy. Not only has the public received accurately detailed figures of the bio-mechanical Evangelions Eva-00, Eva-01, Eva-02, Eva-03, Eva-04 and the shy, red-eyed Rei Ayanami, but exceptionally unpainted, clear variants. And if that were not enough, Kaiyodo repeated their run of Evangelions, only this time applying metallic paint and also released a massive Box Set of EVA 01. As the saying goes, their can't be enough a good thing. Later this year (Fall), Kaiyodo will be releasing two new Eva Units: Eva-01 Test Type Full Action Figure: Matsumura Version and Eva-05 Mass Production Model Full Action Figure. Click below for a better look at our exclusive Eva-01 prototype pic- on display at Tokyo Toy Show 2001!
In regards to the Evangelion movies, "It is looking like a two disc set including both movies, set for around the end of October. The disc will also feature lots of extras including voice director commentary (English), VA interviews, director interview. He said that there will about 2 hours of extras included. He also confirmed that there will be no edits." Once the Evangelion movies are done, "Virus Buster Surge, Ghost Sweeper and Astro Boy. Virus Buster Surge might also include a commentary track. Back catalog titles up next for DVD include Gunbuster (possibly with a dub track), Black Jack, Giant Robo and X. Both Giant Robo and X had to wait for the region 2 release. It was also mentioned that most of the extras on the Giant Robo R2 discs will not be on the Manga R1 due to Manga's contract with the licensor. They will try to get these out by Christmas. When asked about Wings of Honneamise, Keith insisted that it was a print quality issue rather than an encoding problem and thus no recall for the disc is planned.
I've been given the ok to post my plan so here it is, the release plan for the City Hunter 2 TV series. Next week I'll be putting up a pre-order page on the website to begin taking orders for the first of two 5 disc box sets to cover the entire 63 episode series. These discs will be subtitle only. The sets will come in fold out boxes similar to those used for the X-Files and other releases with a slip case. We'll take pre-orders and when we reach 2000 orders we'll begin production. Each box will start out with a $124.98 SRP but the price will drop depending on how many pre-orders we have when the set is complete. This will still be under the ADV Fansubs label and will be the first ADV Fansubs DVDs. I'll post more details, such as the link to the page, later this week as I get things ready.
First off, Bandai Entertainment, represented by Jerry Chu: For May, look for Angel Links #1, Dark Solider D (Bandai's first live action title), and Escaflowne # 5 & 6. Crest of The Stars DVD was delayed due to source issues, but will come out in June and will be bi-monthly there after. Bandai and Viz will release the Jin-Roh movie in theaters starting 25 May in New York, San Fransisco and LA. It'll open in Seattle on 29 June. They are hoping to get the Escaflowne movie in theaters by the end of the year. Just a confirmation that Bandai does have Love Hina, but not certain if it'll be just the TV series or if the specials, etc. are included. They are also looking into the possiblity of bringing out related goods, similar to what they have done with Gundam. Titles in production now: Better Man, Fancy LaLa (DVD will have dub), Saber Marionette J to X, Silent Mobius and Brain Powerd. All titles will come out some time in 2002 and bandaient.com will hold voting on which title the fans want to come out first. Gundam 0079, 0080, 0083 and MS08 Team will start showing on Cartoon Network starting in June (tentatively). Pilot Canidate (Canidate for Goddess) is slated for October. MS08 Team DVD will be out starting July (but Jerry did have a finished DVD to give away, so the first disc is ready to go) Gundam TV (original) will be out starting in August Gundam movies DVD box, with sub/dub and DD5.1 will be out in November More "value" DVD sets like Haunted Junction and Don't Leave Me Alone Daisy will be probably released in the future by Bandai, not in the near future. Cowboy Bebop box set is slated for fall or winter 2001. It will include a box, and they are considering throwing in a figure or a DVD of extras (interviews, etc.), but noting has been finalized yet. Bandai Ent. does not yet have the rights to the Bebop movie Bandai is also working on getting Canadian distribution set up and is considering a soundtrack line. ADV Films: ADV will work on next the Martian Successor Nadesico movie and You're Under Arrest movie. ADV has an option on the Gekkiganger 3 OVA. Other titles in the works: Princess 9 (5 ep/DVD), Shin Getter Robo, Soul Hunter. Fans of Marmalade Boy were urged to pick up Princess 9. ADV movies in theaters: Parasite Eve, Gamera 2 (both live action), Spriggan (slated for September). Gamera and Gamera 3 will be out on DVD. ADV is hoping to get its entire backcatalog on DVD by either the end of 2001 or sometime in 2002. Bubblegum Crisis 2040 will be broadcast on TV this year as possibly will be Nadia on the Blue Water. Nadia might include a Spanish language track on the DVDs ADV is negotiations with DiC to get Sailor Moon/Sailor Moon R on DVD. Fans are urged to contact ADV so that they can go to DiC to show them how much support the show has. Future ADV DVDs will include more extras and possibly alternate angles, now that they've figured out the DVD authoring process. ADV is working on a recall for the inverted audio on the Sakura Wars DVDs; contact DLW for details. By 2002, ADV Fansub line will switch over DVDs, since the sub VHS market is nearly non-existant. They hope that this imprint will be able to concentrate on older titles (i.e. pre-1994) where dubbing would be difficult or nearly impossible. We might see the Nuku Nuku DVDs by the end of the year. Simliar to Bandai, ADV is looking into getting titles distributed in Canada, but is having problems with Canadian requirement to include a French track.
The May 4th Entertainment Weekly had an item on Hello Kitty as part of their "The Scout: EW's Guide to the Next New Things" The feature was about how stars such as Brandy, Christina Aquilera, Tyra Banks, and Parker Possey are sporting Hello Kitty merchandise in the media. The economic downturn in the US is effecting Mexican speciality TV networks such as Televisa and TV Azteca because of cuts in local and American advertising budgets. A much smaller number of new shows will be shown in the coming season. Televisa announced a cut of more than 2500 people in its personal, and will be choosing to re-run old shows rather than introduce new ones. The only anime show it will be airing it St. Tail. The network has the rights to a large number of anime series, but they are shying away from airing them due to controversy. Anime has been labeled "satanic-high sexually-violent" by ultra-conservatory groups that are now in the Mexican federal government. TVC, an cable channel owned by PCTV, the company that sells the signals of TV Cable to operator companies in Mexico, has remove anime series "Tico y sus Amigos" (Nanatsu no Umi no Tico), "La Isla del Tesoro" (Treasure Island), and "Time Quest" (Time Travel Tondekeman!). The shows have been replaced by the TV children soap opera El Club de los 7. "Supercampeones" (Captain Tsubasa J) has been moved to Saturday morning where it is the only anime being show. Anime is being replaced by teen series like Hang Out!, California Dreams, Hardy Boys, and other similars from early 90's, and will run an animated series "El Reino de Kingsley" (Kinglsey kingdom), an animated religious show. Fox Kids still not confirm the premiere of Patlabor 2 the movie, but in some tv schedule indicate that it will premiere the Saturday 12th. The only new show confirmed by FK is Kong, a cartoon series by BKN. But, in its official page, FK announced the premiere of Digimon 02 in July. The movie of this series, named in US "Digimon the movie", is on sale on video in Mexico, season. Thanks to César De la luz for the information.

AIA, a new game company founded by videogame industry veteran Yoshiaki Kanazawa, is preparing an Akira videogame for the Sony Playstation 2. The Akira game will be out in August, just a few weeks after the release of the remastered Akira video and DVD (see "Akira DVD Packaged in Collector's Tin"). Other Akira merchandise includes the McFarlane Toys second series of Anime toys, featuring Akira (see, "McFarlane Fields Diverse Lineup"), shipping to retailers in September. And Dark Horse will have three volumes of the English version of the original manga series (see "Dark Horse Retro Manga Boffo") out by the time the Akira video hits the shelves on July 24th.
The Akira videogame is said to take full advantage of the three-dimensional potential of the Playstation 2 format. The Akira offering will be only the second game created by AIA, whose first offering is the popular Illbleed game for the Sega Dreamcast platform. Yoshiaki Kanazawa, the founder of AIA, founded, owned, and operated Jaleco Co. Ltd. one of Japan's leading game developers. Pioneer Entertainment Rep Chad Kime has gotten back to ANN with details about the inclusion of the Streamline dub on the Akira DVD as well as some of the other extras that may be included on the DVD. Regarding the Streamline Dub, Pioneer has plans to include it on the DVD, however there is concern that doing so may force them to reduce the video's bitsream and end up losing the THX certification for this DVD. If this is the case then the Streamline dub will be removed in order to maintain the THX certification. Unfortunately it is currently looking like they will not be able to include the the Streamline Dub. Pioneer is still in the process of ironing out the details regarding which extras will be included on the second DVD in the collectors edition. Likely possibilities include Production reports/making of features and the sound files (a making of for the soundtrack).
I just heard that Gainax is now producing a new anime for TV here in Japan. It's called MAHOROMATIC and is based on a manga series. It's a manga that comes out as part of Comic GUM. I actually love this comic! Why do all the manga that I buy keep becoming anime? It's perplexing to see your favorite manga become an anime since the feeling and nuances chnage.
From the world of Capcom's hit game and cartoon Mega-Man (aka Rockman Dash) come the Kobuns! Made of Filled PVC, the approximate 10.5" tall Kobuns offer limited poseability and will come with three different facial expressions. To be packaged in a master case of 12 (assortment 4 of each) with a MSRP of $24.95 each. Look for these around mid-June, 2001.
Planet Namek reports the following:
Toriyama has done two of these in the past, which according to #db expert Wuken, weren't all that great. However, unlike the previous two, this manga is going to be a parody of Dragon Ball. Here's a teaser image from the comic. It's really difficult to make fun of yourself well, but we'll see how AT does... :P Understand this, stubborn fans: This is a one-time deal. This is NOT a new Dragon Ball series.
Wuken has provided the site with an image that can be viewed here.

Lisa Ortiz, voice actress most widely known for her role as Lina Inverse from Slayers, has confirmed and will be attending Anime Central this year.
Seiyuu Naoko Matsui regrets to inform us that she will not be able to attend Anime Central as planned this year. However it is for a happy reason, as she'll be getting married this May, and the wedding planning just didn't allow her to attend, even though she worked until this late trying to make the schedule work.
Also, Crispin Freeman has had to cancel his appearance at Anime Central. Theirish repertory theater in new york, where Crispin is playing the lead in their production of The Picture of Dorian Gray, has extended the play's run past the original May 6th final performance date.

Berusaiyu no Bara (The Rose of Versailles), a 1970's comic book about tragic love in 18th-century France, first appeared as a cartoon series in the weekly girls' comic Margaret in 1972.
The author, Riyoko Ikeda, recently commented in an interview, "I've long wanted to make an opera out of 'Berusaiyu no Bara". Riyoko Ikeda went on to state that the opera will be translated into Italian from Japanese in a bid to make it a world-class work. Riyoko also stated that she will solicit compositions based on the libretto such as for a duet by Oscar and Andre and a Marie Antoinette aria. The opera is expected to last well over three hours.
The story, which is set against the backdrop of the French court before and during the French Revolution of 1789, revolves around the heroine Oscar, a noblewoman raised as a man, who becomes a bodyguard for Queen Marie Antoinette.
Berusaiyu no Bara has also gained a large following elsewhere in Asia, Europe and the United States due to an animated version.

Digital Bits is running a piece of Akira artwork that they're calling the upcoming DVD artwork. No indication of whether this is the standard edition cover or the deluxe edition cover.
Pioneer's announced an 8/13 release date for the first volume of Hand Maid May via the Right Stuf. This ten episode series (which has an eleventh episode that was made directly for video) will be released in a fashion just like the Japanese release. Retail is $29.99 the DVD has a running time of 60 minutes. Apparently the title wasn't supposed to be announced until sometime in May, and we're guessing the information that got out was simply wrong. The 11 episode series will be released on three discs in a 4/3/4 format.
Based on the popular Japanese movie, video, and comic books, Samurai X, these upcoming action figures from Toycom are made of a durable PVC and offer a high amount of detail. Kenshin, Sanosuke, and Hajime have 7 points of articulation while Kaoru offers 10. All in blister card packaging. These first four figures are now being offered for pre-order in the latest issue of Diamond Previews (May) for $12.99 each and scheduled to ship in September 2001.
--- the release date has shifted from 7/3 to 7/24. This is likely due to that particular week being a big holiday/vacation week for a lot of people and a lot of outdoor activities, which means a lot less foot traffic in retail stores. A shift to the end of the month makes sense, and if anyone remembers what 7/25/2000 was like, there were about 15 anime releases on that day last year. Definitely a big release period.
The other information is about the deluxe edition with the special tin being made for it. Apparently the first 75,000 copies will be packaged in this collectors tin and after that it will be a typical two disc case.
According to the latest update at Diamond Comics for items shipping in the July timeframe, there's some new titles listed there.

I might put this up for preorder soon if we get some good ideas. Dubbing actually begins next week, with some familiar names..."

So there you have 1 hour of DBZ in the afternoon and 1 hour of DBZ at midnights. What more can you ask for, considering that you will see al lot of DBZ till mid-June. I still feel strongly that this was a bad move to take away one whole hour from the regular Toonami block. Big O has run its course so you won't be seeing that on Toonami for a while. Sailor Moon and Outlaw Star fans don't get alarmed because you might see both SM and OS back on air sometime during this summer.

Wizard Entertainment is preparing its first totally anime publication, Anime Invasion, which is being solicited in the current (April) edition of Diamond Previews. Retailers will be able to select from two different covers, one featuring an Akira design by Pat Lee (Warlands), and one with a DBZ and Sailor Moon "Toonami" cover. The magazine will carry a $4.99 cover price. Wizard has planned Anime Invasion as a one-shot, but they are clearly testing the waters to see if interest is strong enough to warrant a monthly magazine. Remember that Wizard's ToyFare began as a one-shot trial.
Anime Invasion will have a major emphasis on DVD thanks to an Anime DVD Buyers Guide featuring the top 50 anime titles available on DVD. Plus Wizard will inform readers which DVDs have hidden surprises and, more importantly, how to access all the "Easter eggs" that make the DVD format so enticing for collectors. A special feature on the remastered DVD collector's edition of Akira (see "Remastered Akira Video Debut Set") is sure to have fans salivating.
Other key features include interviews with top anime creators including Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell), who talk about their new projects that will be appearing over the next year. In addition there will be plenty of coverage on the hottest current anime titles here in the U.S. including DBZ, Sailor Moon, Transformers, Gundam, Pokemon, Trigun, Street Fighter, Ranma ˝, and Escaflowne.
Wizard's Anime Invasion should be a good test of the strength of the anime marketplace in the U.S. It should also prove enlightening to see how Wizard's typically glossy production values will be received by the American anime community. Protoculture Addicts and Animerica are excellent publications that have served the North American market very well for many years, but with the growing popularity of the Toonami block on the Cartoon Network (see "Toonami Ratings Soar"), it would appear that there is room for a publication like Anime Invasion.
