9-8-99---- AnimeFantastique To Cease Publication

The #4 issue of AnimeFantastique (Covering boundry expanding animation in the east and the west), to be released in October, will be the magazine's last. Editor, Dan Persons cites an unsupportive market for the magazine's end in final issue's editorial, he also states that "however AFQ has failed, it was not for lack of quality". He gives hope that a magazine covering groundbreaking animation worldwide will again someday, see the light of day:

"It didn't happen this time, but that doesn't mean it won't happen sooner or later. Believe it or not, I still consider the thesis behind _AnimeFantastique_ to be valid: that a synthesis is in progress in the animation world, one that will see western animators taking further advantage of the expanded boundaries first explored by the Japanese. Upcoming titles suggest it -- works such as OSMOSIS JONES, SPIRIT OF THE WEST, and the TV adaptation of Kevin Smith's CLERKS point the way to a wider palette of animated subject matter, and the growing acceptance by western audiences of animation as a filmmaking medium as open and flexible as live-action."

* For more information go to AnimeFantastique's website at: www.cfq.com/afq.html.

Recently in Japan, controversy has been brewing over a punk rock version of the Japanese national anthem: "Kimigayo". Performed by the Little Screaming Revue band, the cover's appearance on their new album has actually kept it from being released! Singer Kiyoshiro Imawano said at a recent concert in Tokyo that the album would be released on Sept. 22 by Swim Records, an independent record company. "Kimigayo", (recently adopted as Japan's anthem) is among seven songs on "Fuyu no Jujika" (The Cross of Winter), the bands third album. The singer said through his office that he could not understand the problem because his version of "Kimigayo" only represented an attempt to sing the national anthem in his own way.

9-6-99---- Ebert Gives Princess Mononoke Thumbs Up

After attending the Telluride film festival's screening of Princess Mononoke this past weekend in Colorado, Roger Ebert (one of America's prominent movie critics) has showered the film in praises in his latest article.

Ebert writes: "The day began with one of the most wondrous films I ever hope to see. "Princess Mononoke," by the Japanese master of animation Hayao Miyazaki, is a symphony of action and images, a thrilling epic of warriors and monsters, forest creatures and magical spells, with an underlying allegory about the relationship of man and nature."

"This one transcends everything else he (Miyazaki) has done, and is being given a major push by Miramax, with an opening Oct. 29. If the Motion Picture Academy truly does seek out the five best features of the year, then it is hard to see how it can fail to nominate this one."

Very high praises indeed, it will be interesting to see how Mononoke fares when the Oscar nominations are announced in a few months. Can you imagine, an Anime film winning a Best Picture Oscar? I can. Cross your fingers.
