11-26-02---- Tokyopop Scores CLAMP Quintet

Los Angeles, CA (November 26, 2002) - - TOKYOPOP, the leading and most prolific U.S. graphic novel publisher, is about to publish five new properties from the "rock stars of manga," CLAMP: CLAMP School Detectives, The Man of Many Faces, Duklyon: CLAMP School Defenders, Miyuki Chan in Wonderland and Shirahime-syo: Snow Goddess Tales. The most popular manga creators in America, CLAMP sells millions of graphic novels every year. Other great TOKYOPOP series to CLAMP's credit include Angelic Layer, Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, Clover and Magic Knight Rayearth, each followed passionately by readers. This quartet of fabulous females never fails to create best-selling manga, and the following five short series are no exception.

Three of the five new stories take place in the fictional "CLAMP School Universe," an elite, self-contained city within Tokyo that is divided by educational levels and has its own banks, hospital and transportation system:

CLAMP School Detectives This story follows the antics of a trio of pre-teen sleuths whose unique abilities allow them to help girls in distress around their school campus. The team is made up of Student Body President and resident brainiac, Nokoru Imonoyama, who is able to detect a woman crying from 2 km away; Student Body Secretary Suoh Takamura, a fifth grade master martial artist; and fourth grader Akira Ijyuin, a debonair master thief, who is also known as the "Man of 20 Faces."

The Man of Many Faces The debonair Akira Ijyuin reappears in this shoujo romantic comedy that follows the master thief and the girl who loves him from grade school into adulthood. The story begins with Akira as a CLAMP School third grader, who lives with his two mothers and is ordered to steal bizarre items at their whim. When he's forced to hide from the police one night, he takes refuge in the room of a young girl, who falls in love with him in spite of their four-year age difference.

Duklyon: CLAMP School Defenders This is CLAMP at their most wacky! High school freshmen Kentaro and Takeshi are members of an elite police force that protects the CLAMP School from otherworldly invaders. The "Defenders" take their orders from beautiful but merciless Elli Chusonji, who keeps the boys in line with threats (they're more afraid of her than their villains). When they hear a certain song play over the intercom, they don their armor, grab their weapons and set off on the next adventure. Their nemesis: Sinister Kotobuki, an alien who leads a secret organization hoping to take over the Earth.

Miyuki Chan in Wonderland In this story (which has also been released as an anime), CLAMP has created a loose, sexy retelling of Alice in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass. Things get a little bizarre as young Miyuki-Chan encounters scantily clad female equivalents of the famous fairy tale's cast, all of whom make a pass at her. The book features over a dozen full-color art pages, including character designs from the cult classic anime.

Shirahime-syo: Snow Goddess Tales A unique, stand-alone volume, this is an anthology of folktales about the "Snow Goddess," whose tears create snow. The art style is a departure from typical CLAMP artwork, being made up of brushstrokes and naturalistic backgrounds. TOKYOPOP plans to release Shirahime-syo: Snow Goddess Tales as a special edition hardback before the book debuts in paperback form.

11-25-02---- Square And Enix Merge

Thanks to Michael for this:

Japanese RPG giants Enix and Square announced plans on Tuesday to merge operations on April 1st, bringing two of Japan's biggest selling franchises -- Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy -- under one roof: Square Enix Inc.

The deal calls for Square to be absorbed into Enix, with 0.81 shares in Enix being traded for each share in Square. The companies said the move was a bid to strengthen profitability amid stiff competition. What this means is that although the company is named Square Enix Inc., the surviving partner is seemingly Enix. How this will affect day to day operations of Square in Japan, or of Square's U.S. subsidiary, Square Electronic Arts, is uncertain, but Yoichi Wada, the president of Square Japan, is posied to helm the new merger.

When contacted for confirmation, a Square representative was unable to provide confirmation, stating that details would be released in the morning. Enix U.S. was also unable to offer insight to the groundbreaking deal.

What does this mean for the gaming world? It means that the two mightiest RPG powerhouses in the industry are now one, bigger RPG goliath. Dragon Quest VII was the biggest-selling game in Japan in 2001 (over 4 million copies sold), while that Final Fantasy series has been known to move a few units. Pessimists might suggest that anyone else with an RPG on the burner should just pack it in. More intriguingly, where that leaves Nintendo's contribution (in partnership with Square), which rides besides Sony's infusement (into Square), which tickles Electronic Art's distribution agreement (with Square) is anybody's guess.

A news conference in Japan is scheduled with an official announcement only a couple hours from now. Stay tuned for more details as we get them.

11-25-02---- Otaku Documentary Outsells Speilberg at St. Louis International Film Festival

Dallas, TX, -- November 22, 2002 â?" Dallas-based Tempest Production Company announced today that their first feature-length documentary, "Invasion: Anime," grabbed higher attendance numbers at the 11th Annual St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF) than the free sneak preview screening of "Steven Speilberg Presents Taken," which preceded the documentary's world premiere. "Invasion: Anime" brought in an estimated 65% more moviegoers to the Hi-Pointe Theater in St. Louis, MO.

"We couldn't be happier with the turnout," said producer/director Angie Alexander. "We even hung on to most of our audience for the question and answer session after our premiere."

Alexander attributes their success to the efforts of the Tempest production crew both before and after their arrival in St. Louis.

"We came armed with lots of flyers, posters and postcards," she said. "We hit all of the shops, bars, restaurants and parking lots we could find."

The week prior to the festival, Production Coordinator Jacque Burlou complied a list of over 100 comic book stores and Japanese businesses in the greater St. Louis area. "We tried to guesstimate where our target audience might be and spent about 5 hours addressing and stamping posters for a kind of direct- marketing campaign," said Burlou.

The production company also had some last minute-assistance from a radio interview on KMOX AM with Alexander and fellow documentary director AJ Schnack ("Gigantic") as well as an email push from STLFilmwire.com founder Adam Hackbarth, who met Alexander and her staff at an SLIFF party.

"Invasion: ANIME" is an in-depth look at the influx of Japanese animation (or "anime") and its effect on American culture and entertainment over the last half-century. Interview subjects include names well known to anime fans across the world. Steve Bennett, president and founder of Studio Ironcat, artists and animators Akemi Takada, Senno Knife, Makoto Uno and Nobuyuki Takahashi, North American voice actors and directors Amy Howard Wilson, Tiffany Grant, Scott McNeil and Taliasen Jaffe and international anime experts like author Helen McCarthy and Dr. Susan J. Napier, Associate Director of Asian Studies, University of Texas, are but a few of more than 20 individuals who donated their time to this project.

"Taken," which has its premiere December 2 on the SciFi Channel, was executive produced by Speilberg. The 20-hour mini-series tells the story of three families over multiple generations and their experiences with alien abductions. The sneak preview consisted of two episodes of the series.

"Invasion: Anime" encompasses several important firsts for Tempest Productions, as it is their first feature-length production and first attempt at a modern-day subject. The company is best known for their short-form examinations of Dallas-Fort Worth history, nearing completion of a series of documentary shorts for the Centennial Celebration in Irving, Texas, and "An Authentic American Haunting: The Bell Witch of Tennessee". Previous productions include "Etched in Stone: A Monumental History" (submitted for consideration in the CableACE awards) and "Utopia Lost: The La Reunion Commune."

More information about Tempest Productions and their documentaries can be found at www.TempestProductions.com. For information about the St. Louis International Film Festival, which runs through November 24, please visit www.SLIFF.org

11-20-02---- Seatbelts Member Plays In London

Seatbelts (Cowboy Bebop) vocalist Steve Conte plays in London next week:

The Marquee Club, one of London's most famous music venues presents a very special show next Wednesday, November 27th featuring only one Noo-Yawk boy, Steve Conte. It's gonna be a big ol’ skool rock and roll party. Steve's being flown in by my friends from Bad Company to play on it.

The "Kat Klub" house band will be Steve Conte (Crown Jewels,The Contes) on guitar/lead vocals, Dave "Bucket" Colwell (Bad Co.) guitar, Jaz (Bad Co) bass and Meatloaf's drummer (his name escapes me...) Joining them will be special guest singers; Spike of London Quireboys, Danny of Thunder, Steve Ellis of Love Affair and Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden.

The show is an "end of tour party" for the London Quireboys and Thunder but also celebrates the re-opening of the legendary Marquee after a seven year absence (most every major act played at the Marquee before its closure in 1996, including Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, REM, U2,and The Who.) Our house band set list reads like a 70's FM radio top 20: Bowie, T-Rex, Mott The Hoople, Ian Hunter, Stones,Who, Elton John, Bad Co., Free, Thin Lizzy, etc. (Wham Bam Thank You M’am!)

The show begins at 11 pm sharp. (it will be listed as "Danny and the Doo Wops"...for contractual reasons.)

More on The Marquee: The new £4 million venue is owned by Eurythmics guitarist Dave Stewart and Mark Fuller, the entrepreneur behind London's Sugar Reef and Embassy club. The Marquee's new 1,200-capacity Islington venue (two miles north of its old location in the West End) boasts a restaurant run by Michelin-starred chef and a special celebs-only gallery.

11-19-02---- Exclusive AFI Review By Daniel Zelter

First off, I'm just making general comments about the event, because I don't think I can write a review for Millenium Actress which does justice to the film. I will just mention that it's beautifully animated, touching, powerful, and deserves an Academy Award for Best Animated Film much more than Spirited Away. I just wish I could say more positive things about the audience in general. It wasn't a bad turn-out, but it was hardly packed to the gills like it was for Spirited Away. My guess is the new Harry Potter movie got more attention, because it seemed to be a lot more crowded-even when you compare the people attending the Mann Chinese Theater to those at AFI overall.

To give you an idea of the low turn-out, when I got in line, there were only FIVE people in front of me! (Though more showed up later, but still...) And while the people I did talk to were nice enough(including one person who works for IMDB), there were some real jerks in the audience. (Like someone who actually asked Satoshi Kon to speak louder into the microphone. And many people left right after the credits(and before the Digital Manga raffle and Q+A session with Kon), which is a shame, because the music was done by none other than Susumu("Berserk") Hirasawa; and his composition is just as resonant in the movie as it is in the show.) I know

I'm being cynical, but the whole situation made me wonder if otaku aren't, in fact, as immature as they're made out to be, and that they'll sooner see an anime with animal mascots, bishonen, fan service and violence than something that's actually for adults, without adult content. (Let's just say I wouldn't be surprised if this movie might end up being more successful in the mainstream than among anime fans. At least the people who hadn't left enthusiastically applauded Kon and the movie....)) But just to prove myself wrong, and to actually give the movie the attention it deserves, I'm going to announce the following information, at the risk of it being stolen on someone else's forum by someone who claims it's their own news.

Millenium Actress will be released unedited and in Japanese with subtitles next year. (It was shown unedited at AFI.) I asked Kon-san about distribution, and he said it's up to Dreamworks, but he hopes it goes wide. (His translator acknowledged Disney's lack of promotional support for Spirited Away in theaters. Though Kon mentioned-on stage-his satisfaction that one of his movies could be shown in L.A. (It was apparently his first trip to the U.S.)) Nothing specific was mentioned, but Dreamworks does have theatrical and home video plans for the film.

Now I'll get to the Q+A. I asked Kon if he was inspired by any samurai movies-due to a number of period settings in the film-and he said he had many, but his most likely influence was Akira Kurosawa's Kumonosu Jo(which http://us.imdb.com/Name?Kurosawa,+Akira translates as the Throne of Blood). A female audience member inquired if he was influenced by any actresses in particular, and he also said many, but emphasized an actress who went on to star in cheerful films right after WW2. Kon chose Hirasawa for the composition, because it fit the right mood.

What was interesting about the director was he actually sat with the general audience during the show, instead of on a podium. (Luckily, I remembered him by his pony tail in photos.) He acted more like a participant than an observer. (In fact, at one point, he was even videotaping the audience members.) So I took a chance, went up to him, shook his hand, bowed, and talked a little bit about Perfect Blue. I can't remember the exact details, but he didn't seem enthusiastic about the live-action film. I wanted to know what it was like to work with Otomo, but apparently Otomo had a very small part in the making of the film. I also mentioned the similarities between the end of Audition and Perfect Blue, and his translator stated that Miike doesn't watch much anime, and that he's really a nice guy in person, and nothing like his films. I tried to find out if Kon had any favorite artists in general(who weren't animators)-because painting is an important theme in the movie-and he once again replied "too many".

I really liked the fact that Satoshi Kon was patient with his fans. He didn't automatically leave, but stayed after the show, and autographed Millenium Actress fans, which were given away in raffles by Akadot and Digital Manga. He even went through his bag for a pen, in order to draw a sketch of Chiyoko(the lead in the movie) on the back of my ticket! So despite a few personal gripes, the event seemed to go off without a hitch, and I'm glad I was able to catch the movie. I'm eagerly anticipating Tokyo Godfathers. (Which should be released in Japan sometime between 2003-2004.)

Akadot is selling bilingual production books of the movie at http://www.millenniumactress.com/.

11-14-02---- BBFC Makes A Hit On Ichi

From The Hollywood Reporter Via Daniel: LONDON -- The British Board of Film Classification made several cuts to the Japanese thriller "Ichi the Killer" before granting the film an "18" certificate, the board said Wednesday. The 11 cuts, which amount to just more than three minutes of screen time, delete "extreme sexualized violence," according to a statement from the BBFC. The BBFC said it was the most substantial use of the scissors it has had to make to an 18-rated film since 1994, when it cut segments from the Hindi-language film "Nammazar." U.K. distributor Medusa Communications declined comment on the cuts to "Ichi the Killer." A spokesman said the company is drawing up plans for the title, which is directed by Takashi Miike, and has not ruled out a theatrical release in the United Kingdom. "Ichi" would mark a rare foray into theatrical distribution for Medusa Communications, which is better known in the United Kingdom as a video distribution label.

Since its establishment, executives from comic industry giants like Dreamwave Productions, Viz Comics, and Image Comics have given eigoMANGA a deluge positive accolades in it all elements of eigoMANGA's production including its comics. eigoMANGA is credited for being the first comic book company to use the Internet to present and distribute their comics. "eigoMANGA.com heats up the Internet comics industry!" hails Wizard Magazine.

The Impact trade paperback collects stories from four of eigoMANGA's top titles:

. Queen of Clubs -Think it's easy being a girl in this modern age? Take a look at life through her eyes. . 3rd Wish - With the perfect girl and immortality, what more could a guy want for his final wish? . The Monkey Tale - A teenager discovers he is the reincarnation of a samurai. His future lies in his past. . Cool Downbeat - They are superheroes in training.
