- ...Rob Marshall is finding filming on...Memoirs of a Geisha complicated,
because his cast all speak different languages. Sony Studios refused to cast
non-Asian actresses in the big screen adaptation of Arthur Golden's
best-selling book about the life of a Japanese geisha, and boasts Chinese
Ziyi Zhang and Li Gong, Malaysian Michelle Yeoh and Japanese Cary-hiroyuki
Tagawa and Ken Watanabe amongst its stars. An insider on the Japanese set
tells American gossip site Pagesix.com, "They hired a 'Pan-Asian' cast. So
now they have Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other Asian actors and they have
had to hire a load of interpreters, especially since there are like 15
Chinese dialects. It is costing a lot of time to do anything." Producer Lucy
Fisher and Doug Wick adds, "We have a Chinese and Japanese interpreter. The
movie may or may not be a day over schedule, but we are brilliantly on time
for an epic and on budget."

Hot on the heels of the announcement that Bandai Entertainment’s new animated series D.I.C.E. would be premiering on Cartoon Network in January 2005, sister company Bandai America today announced that it would be releasing a full toy line based on the property by the premiere date. With futuristic armor called “Gildsuits,” high-tech, transforming vehicles and a mysterious “Phantom Knight,” the feedback to date indicates that D.I.C.E. action figures and toys are certain to make an impression on kids. Bandai plans to build on the homegrown franchise with a videogame due to be released in the Fall of 2005.
“D.I.C.E. is a huge initiative for Bandai America, and one that we hope serves as a model for future properties developed by our company,” said Bill Beebe, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Bandai America Incorporated. “Few companies have their own entertainment, toy and game divisions, and that’s a wonderful position for Bandai to be in—especially when nurturing a property at its launch, as we’re doing with D.I.C.E.”
D.I.C.E (DNA Integrated Cybernetic Enterprises) is a large corporation established to deal with emergencies occurring throughout the Sarbylion galaxy. D.I.C.E. F-99 is the only unit comprised entirely of highly trained kids. When a problem arises, D.I.C.E is called to the rescue. And when their special training and skills aren’t enough, they rely on their Dinobreakers to help get the job done. Always on call, always on alert – D.I.C.E is ready for action!
Building upon the theme of teamwork to overcome insurmountable odds, Bandai America’s toy line will center on the main characters of the F-99 unit and their arsenal of state-of-the-art equipment and vehicles. Many of the toys have transforming features and dinosaur-inspired designs, which is sure to appeal to boys of all ages eager to bring the excitement of the show to life. Borrowing a page from how movies are released, a major launch program is currently in place, complete with an in-theatre trailer, print/tv advertising, and a giant promotion with Cartoon Network, all scheduled to work in conjunction with the premiere of the show.
“The D.I.C.E. series targets boys 6-11 with cool animation and transforming toys that bring the on-screen heroes to life,” said Matthew Golding, director of marketing for Bandai America Inc. “The initial fan response has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic from all age groups, ever since we first offered a glimpse of the toy prototypes at Comic-Con 2004 this past summer.”
D.I.C.E. is scheduled to premiere on Cartoon Network this January, with 40 episodes currently in production. Created by Bandai Entertainment and animated by renowned animation studio, Xebec (subsidiary of Production I.G.), the series showcases the latest in cutting-edge CG/cel animation. Bandai America’s toy line features a wide assortment of action figures, vehicles and role play accessories that faithfully re-create all the action and excitement of the show. - Manga Entertainment And Anchor Bay's Parent, IDT Corporation (NYSE: IDT, IDT.C) today reported record quarterly revenues of $629.7 million for the first quarter of its fiscal 2005, the three months ended October 31, 2004. First quarter revenues increased 22.7% versus the first quarter of fiscal 2004's revenues of $513.1 million and 3.0% over the prior quarter's $611.2 million. Consolidated gross margins of 25.4% were the highest recorded in six years.
First quarter of fiscal 2005's net loss was $11.7 million, or ($0.12) per share, as compared to a net loss of $14.0 million, or ($0.17) per share, in the first quarter of fiscal 2004 and to a net loss of $23.3 million, or ($0.25) per share, in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2004.
Most of the dramatic increase in revenues as compared with the year-ago period was a direct result of several acquisitions, particularly the December 2003 acquisitions of Anchor Bay Entertainment and Mainframe Entertainment, and the June 2004 acquisition of Manga Entertainment. We continue to expect fiscal 2005 revenues approaching $200 million for IDT Entertainment.
Anchor Bay's top revenue generators during the first quarter of fiscal 2005 were Dawn of the Dead, 21 Jump Street, Silk Stalkings, and Thomas the Tank Engine. Manga's top revenue generator was the Ghost in the Shell franchise, which has been selling well partly as a result of DreamWorks' theatrical release of Ghost in the Shell: Innocence as well the television premier of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex on Cartoon Network.

www.animeboston.com
The New England Anime Society is
proud to announce the following Guests of Honor who will be attending
Anime Boston 2005: voice actors Greg Ayers, David Kaye, and Dave
Wittenberg.
Greg Ayres is not your average voice actor. The once "fanboy" turned
VA started working for ADV Films two years ago, and in that time
managed to snag two of his favorite roles in anime. He was thrilled
to voice the role of his favorite character Son Goku in Saiyuki, then
just one year later Kaworu Nagisa in the director's cut of Neon
Genesis Evangelion. Other roles include Toga in Gravion, Bomb in
BASTOF Syndrome, Yuya Asou in SuperGals, Mannen in Pretear, and
Shinji Kazama in Full Metal Panic. He can also be heard in other
anime titles such as The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Steel Angel
Kurumi, Those Who Hunt Elves II, Panyo Panyo DiGi Charat, Dragon
Knight Wheels of Time, Oh Super Milk Chan, and Aura Battler Dunbine.
David Kaye is heard world wide providing the voice for thousands of
different broadcast projects. He is perhaps best known to fans as
Megatron in Beast Wars: Transformers and Transformers: Energon. He
has also played Professor Charles Xavier on X-Men: Evolution,
Sesshomaru in Inu-Yasha, Zabo in The SoulTaker, Treize Khushrenada in
Gundam Wing, and Soun Tendo in Ranma 1/2 in addition to roles in many
other titles. He still finds the time to appear in many well-known
television series including Battlestar Galactica, The Outer Limits,
The X Files, made for TV movies, and feature films (yes, that was him
in Happy Gilmore). David continues to travel back and forth between
New York, Los Angeles, and Vancouver, recording radio and television
commercials for clients throughout North America as well as appearing
in a few from time to time.
Dave Wittenberg is a relative newcomer to the world of anime voice
acting, but has already given a voice to a number of major characters
in various anime titles. His credits include Michael in Witch Hunter
Robin, Jiro/Kikaider in Kikaider, Sora in .hack//SIGN, Kei Kusanagi
in Please Teacher, the tamer Henry Wong and countless digimon in
Digimon, Tak in Initial D, Lee Sampson in Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, as
well as roles in RaveMaster, Last Exile, Captain Harlock, King
Gainer, and 12 Kingdoms. He has also been a writer/director for
Digimon and Figure 17. In addition, Dave has done a lot of work in
video games. He can be heard in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, 3, and 4,
Xenosaga Episode I, Metal of Honor: Rising Sun, and Metal Arms:
Glitch in the System among others. Dave started his career in college
radio. Three years later, he took a job at WBCN in Boston. He
remained at WBCN for a few years until getting a contract with a
station in Los Angeles. After that station switched to Spanish
programming, he turned to Internet radio to broadcast the music he
enjoyed. Dave has also been a writer for Bill Maher's Politically
Incorrect, Dennis Miller, and Craig Kilborn.
Anime Boston 2005 will be Dave Wittenberg's second appearance at Anime Boston.
12-4-04---- East Meets South Preliminary
2 of the 3 days of Anniston, Alabama's inagural East Meets South (www.eastmeetssouth.com) anime convention have elapsed and ANS is there on site, having grasciously been granted unprecedented exclusive access to covering this event. There are so many great stories here we will all tell in due time. There are no lofty acquisition announcements from the usual companies, there are no company representatives. There is no corporate sponsorship, in fact no guests of honor to speak of. And I love it. EMS was 100% grass roots 100% about the fans and for the fans. I've seen something here that I think will be the shape of the future with regards to how cons are executed.
If indeed fate exists, I must remark at how it has the tendancy to turn unfortunate events around and perhaps make a situation turn out for the best, perhaps even better than would have happened otherwise. Such is the case with EMS, in planning for over a year, which discovered it's originally scheduled convention space would not be accessible with less than a week prior to the actual con. With eager fans pre-registered and just days to go, the staff recieved assitance from a rare corner as far as anime cons go in the form of the mayor of the city of Anniston and chamber of commerce for Calhoun County. The result has been a resounding success, stay tuned for our full report and photos to come shortly.
