One of the first ambitious attempts to bring a graphic novel to interactive life on the Internet continues to thrive. "Broken Saints" makes its television debut this week in Canada on CBC's On Demand service, and a four-disc collector's edition DVD set hits retail in the United Kingdom. The 12-hour saga was created, directed, written and produced by Brooke Burgess, who previously was a producer with Electronic Arts. Starting from a completely self-financed team of three, the project grew to involve about 100 people before it was completed. The atmospheric online tale of four different protagonists who travel their individual harrowing paths to a shared goal won the 2003 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for Online Animation, among other honors. These achievements led Telefilm Canada to provide Burgess with a grant to develop the four-disc DVD set. William B. Davis ("The X-Files"), David Kaye ("X-Men: Evolution"), Kirby Morrow ("Dragonball Z"), Janyse Jaud ("Spider-Man"), Colin Foo ("Smallville") and Scott McNeil ("X-Men: Evolution") are among the voice talents on the alternative soundtrack.

2-11-05 (10:32AM EST)---- Japanese Theme Park Controversy
Theres a bit of a row brewing in Japan over introducing Japanese character attractions in American based themeparks. As previously reported, Universal Studio Japan made an announcement that it will launch it's Full Metal Alchemist addition in Osaka next month. The move has ignited some heated debate on the topic between fans. Part of the arguement is over the fact that Hello Kitty's attraction last year and Alchemist this year is some how upsetting the traditional philosophy of theme parks of this type, which is to provide entertainment to the family and not just kids or adults seperately. Another part seems to center on the obejection to introducing Japanese based works into attractions in these American style environments. Tokyo Disneyland for instance incorporates no Japanese characters. Alchemist runs from March 19 - May 8.
2-10-05 (5:10PM EST)---- Private Investors Funding Musical And Visual Arts In Japan
A new method has gained popularity recently in Japan to secure production capital used by new music bands and pop idol's to generate CD and DVD releases, the private investor fund. And despite initial risk, those willing to put up the cash are getting back compensation extending beyond the monetary realm. This is being called the "funds business" in Japan There are many artists who cannot put out CD because there is no money even if they posess great talent. Many private individuals are therefore supplementing the deficit artists are facing on the capital and marketing side. Groups like "Rights bank" located in Shibuya establish such funds which private investors can then contribute to. Upon reaching an investment goal, the artist can then take the money and produce a CD. Investors can then get return according to the provided distribution simulated for a certain period. Advantages also enjoyed by investors include preferential treatment such as tickets to live perfomances. These types of funds have also been popular recently with creators developing idol DVD's, photograph collections, anime production, filmmaking, etc.

A TREE OF PALME FEB. 13, 15 & 16 at ALAMO DOWNTOWN

"a dazzling allegorical science-fantasy tale" (FPS Magazine) "It is a serious anime that can change not only your perception of anime, but also of the meaning of your life." (Victor Eisenberg, Big Apple Anime Fest)

An animator whose credits include the anime essentials AKIRA, NAUSICAA, NEO-TOKYO and ROBOT CARNIVAL, Takashi Nakamura spent ten years developing PALME with a crew of 500 and a mix of 2Dcel and 3D animation. In this dark retelling of the 'Pinocchio' story, Palme is a puppet made out of a special wood called Kuroppo wood, and given life with a mystical sap that works as blood. Initially created to care for his makers ailing wife, Palme becomes despondent and eventually lifeless when she dies. One day a madwoman from the Underground City of Tamas shows up at the cottage and charges Palme with returning the sacred Egg of Toutoback to her homeland. Mistaking her for his dead mistress, he springs to life to carry out her wishes. He starts off on a perilous journey that sees him team up with a rag-tag group of orphans that he rescues from the slave-trade. He meets the abused waif Popo and falls in love with her, and is determined to become human to win her affection. But Palme is naive and too socially inexperienced to handle matters of the heart responsibly, and succumbs to anger and resentment over his inhuman condition. Worse still, he does not realize that the Egghe is carrying is a tool of mass destruction. The animation is top notch, with vintage character design and impressive landscapes that recall Mamoru (ANGEL'S EGG) Oshii's work. Alternately poignant and horrifying, Palme's existential crisis soon supplants his original mission, and he is willing to destroy himself and the underground city to become human. Ironically, this tendency toward destruction is his most human quality of all. (Kier-La Janisse)
