Courtesy The Hollywood Reporter via Daniel on the last day of the year:

Bandai Korea, the Korean branch of Japan's biggest animation house, opened a video-on-demand Web site in Korea at the end of November, bringing its vast and popular catalog to a cartoon-hungry country. By taking its product to the Internet, not only can Bandai avoid many of Korea's Japanese culture restrictions banning such Japanese exports as music videos and films (many of which are scheduled to be repealed in the new year), it is also a sign of the significance that the online world is gaining as a broadcast medium. Individual episodes of programs like "Gundam" cost 800-1,200 won (about $0.65-$1) depending on the bandwidth of the broadcast. "We would like to afford cartoon fans a chance to watch our content," says Shinsuke Kojima, the digital contents team manager at Bandai Korea. "We hope to have 1 million downloads in 2004."

12-27-03---- More CN Trimming Observations

Courtesy: NotMousse:In addition to Cowboy Bebop, all anime I've seen in the past few weeks (with the single exception of Inu Yasha) have had their next episode teasers edited. Additionally all adult swim anime (again with the sole exception of Inu Yasha) has had it's closing credits sped up.

12-26-03---- New Bebop CN Trims

Courtesy Gina's observation:

I've noticed that since Cowboy Bebop has been put on Adult Swim, it has been edited for time in a way it hasn't before. A generic, sped-up ending theme is used instead of the closing credits specific to each episode--including for "Jupiter Jazz", part 2--they cut off "Space Lion" and inserted "The Real Folk Blues" instead. Also, the previews for the next episode are no longer shown.

Ever wonder how the great kung fu comic creators like Tony Wong, Andy Seto and Wing Shing Ma work their magic? Well now you can learn how it's done. How to Draw Kung Fu Comics will identify all steps necessary to create a complete kung fu comic. Chapters cover drawing tools and materials, character development (bodies, heads, hair, clothing), background images (backdrops/scenery) and special effects (action sequences/battles).

How to Draw Kung Fu Comics will be a slightly different take on the How to Draw… phenomenon. While there are a lot of martial art references in other comics and manga, HK kung fu comics bring a very fluid and cinematic style to their titles. The readers can see and follow the movements of the characters as if he or she were watching a Hong Kong cinema. So what makes How to Draw Kung Fu Comics different is how it illustrates the way to make character movements seem as if they flow together and appear believable and fantastic all in one go.

We hope to bring the creation process down to earth and illustrate a more prosaic format, so a single aspiring illustrator can grasp the intricacies of original character design, action sequences etc. inherent to an authentic HK kung fu comic.

About the Creators An up and coming Hong Kong publisher and comic art school known as ComicsKey is heading this project for ComicsOne. ComicsKey is composed of many former employees of Andy Seto (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Wing Shing Ma’s (Storm Riders) studios. Collectively they have worked on great comics such as Saint Legend, Para Para, Black Leopard, Heaven Sword & Dragon Sabre, King of Fighters 2000 and King of Fighters Z.

Arm of Kannon, Model, The Demon Ororon, Crescent Moon and Suikoden round out the exciting must-read list. With stories steeped in action/adventure, comedy, horror, fantasy and romance, these titles literally offer something for everyone.

BATTLE VIXENS (Action/Adventure/Comedy, Volume 1 Release: 4/6/04) Also known as Ikki Tosen, this immensely popular Yuji Shiozaki series is being adapted by famed comic book pro Keith Giffen (Justice League, Battle Royale). Its shocking story follows a troubled teenage girl who wants nothing more than to beat someone to a bloody pulp. This raging buxom beauty has no idea of her true fighting potential until her mother sends her to Tokyo, where she begins training with other brawl-hunting "Toushi"-warriors from around the world who possess ancient jewels that hold the spirits of fallen Chinese heroes.

LAMENT OF THE LAMB (Horror, Volume 1 Release: 5/11/04) Created by Kei Toume-one of Japan's hottest manga artists-this surprise hit inspired a live action film and an anime series in Japan. Lament of the Lamb takes readers on a chilling journey into the tormented life of a family of vampires-all of whom struggle constantly to suppress their insatiable thirst for blood. Sent away after the death of his mother, Kazuna has long been blissfully unaware of his "condition." When his teenage hormones begin to rage, an uncontrollable bloodlust suddenly rears its head. Can his long-lost sister protect him from the world? More important... can she protect the world from him?

ARM OF KANNON (Horror, Volume 1 Release: 5/4/04) An "11" on the evil scale, this dark tale by Masakazu Yamaguchi will appeal to fans of TOKYOPOP's Battle Royale and Priest. After Juzo Mikami discovers an ancient Buddhist relic rumored to have mystical powers, he vanishes, leaving behind his wife and two children. Juzo reappears three years later, but something isn't right, and his son, Mao, is suspicious of the man claiming to be his father. As Mao searches for the truth behind the relic and his father's disappearance, a secret organization bent on creating mystical super-soldiers may just get in the way and cause a world of chaos in the process.

MODEL (Romance/Horror, Volume 1 Release: 5/4/04) Lee So-young (The God of Death, Check) delivers this classic gothic story. Like Lament of the Lamb, its plot involves vampires...but introduces a whole new angle to the parasite-host relationship. Jae is a struggling artist living in Europe. Determined to succeed at all costs, she finds herself in the most unusual of barter deals. She allows a vampire to drink her blood if he allows her to paint him. Her hope? That this bizarre situation may just give her the edge that launches her into stardom as a painter.

THE DEMON ORORON (Fantasy, Volume 1 Release: 4/6/04) Fans of all things goth will delight in this unique manga created by Mizuki Hakase and adapted by Josh D.M. Dysart (Image's Violent Messiahs). Chiaki is the orphaned daughter of the Archangel Michael and a human woman. Ororon is an unholy devil with a bounty on his head. With nowhere to run and no allies to turn to, Ororon and Chiaki struggle to stay alive as the battle between devils and the angelic order rages around them.

CRESCENT MOON (Fantasy/Sci-Fi, Volume 1 Release: 5/4/04) Created by Haruko Iida, this classic Japanese legend of sorcery and myth has a lure shojo fans will find irresistible, especially if they've ever read TOKYOPOP's Demon Diary or Vampire Game. In this unusual story, a high-school girl has the uncanny ability to bring luck to everyone she physically touches. A recurring dream drives her to a tribe of demons called the Lunar Race, who ask for her aid in recovering their stolen power source. As an envoy between them and the Human Race, she is joined by a group of fierce but kind companions. Their battles and adventures forge a camaraderie that will never be broken!

SUIKODEN (Action/Adventure/Fantasy, Volume 1 Release: 5/11/04) Shimizu Aki-a huge manga talent in Japan-has created this wonderful story that inspired the hit Konami video game. For years, a devastating war has raged between the countries of The Grasslands and Zecksen. Virtually every family in both countries has suffered some sort of devastating loss, and their final ray of hope is vanishing as a long-awaited peace treaty crumbles before their very eyes. With nothing left to lose, a quest is undertaken to find the legendary Flame Bearer who is credited with ending a war many years ago.

For its American debut, the opening pages of Hikaru no Go will be presented in full color. This special anniversary edition will debut our newest serial - Hikaru no Go - an intense psychological drama that will captivate readers. Manga has been immensely popular in Japan for many decades and I am pleased that a diverse American audience has wholeheartedly embraced the stories and format presented in SHONEN JUMP. VIZ is committed to offering unique titles that feature positive characters in a medium that remains true to the artistic integrity of the original Japanese artists."

Hikaru no Go, or HikaGo (as it's known to fans), tells the story of Hikaru Shindo. An average 12-year-old, Hikaru likes comics and video games, struggles in school, and keeps looking for ways to make money because his parents dock his allowance for bad grades. When he finds a dusty old Go board in his grandfather's attic, Hikaru awakens a 1,000-year-old ghost named Sai. During Japan's Heian period, Sai tutored the emperor in the ancient and complex game of Go, but he was unjustly accused of cheating and died in disgrace. Now Sai lives in Hikaru's mind, and all he wants is to play Go and continue his pursuit of the "Divine Move." However, Hikaru is not interested - he thinks Go is a game for old men. But when he finally relents and lets Sai play a few games, the seriousness and intensity of the game surprises him, and Hikaru finds himself wanting to play Go himself. Soon, inspired by a rivalry with Go prodigy Akira Toya and armed with a natural talent for the game, Hikaru's dedication even surprises Sai, and puts the young boy on the path to become the undisputed Go champion.
