1-18-01---- Outlaw Star Eps. 3 CN Edits

Excerpted from the newsgroup post by Kyle Thomas Pope:

This round of edits were minimal but a couple of them are almost beyond comprehension.

1. Melfina now wears a digital bikini in the piloting tank.
2. Gene's "she's nuts to get naked" changed to "she's nuts to get wet". (This was an improvement!?)
3. Jim's "these guys are anal" changed to "these guys are tight".
4. Scene of Harry MacDougall yelling "die, die, die, die..." while firing missiles cut.
5. Harry MacDougall's "she was really hot" changed to "she was really cute". (While definitely attractive I would not describe Hilda as "cute".)
6. Scene of Tao Master getting incinerated shortened.
7. Scene of Hilda biting her suicide capsule and the subsequent detonation cut. (Oh come on. GW had multiple suicide attempts and noble sacrifices.)
Given the heavy action in these last couple of episodes there really wasn't much beyond language to edit. This will probably change when the story shifts to planetside again.

1-18-01---- Mamoru Oshii Avalon Stage Greeting

1-18-01---- Anime / Manga Gaming

According to The GIA: After months of speculation and rumors of cancellation, Sega has finally unveiled Shenmue 2 to the public. Japanese customers who pre-orded AM2's Fighting Vipers 2 through Sega's online Dreamcast Direct received a special Shenmue 2 trailer as a bonus.

The bulk of the trailer consists of Ryo exploring the wilds of what is presumably China, where the sequel takes place. The touted improvements in the Shenmue engine are on full display, showing off complex, organic environments, sharp detail, and little draw-in. The areas in the demo are unpopulated, so only time will tell if Suzuki's team was able to make good on their promise of up to fifty characters on screen at once.

One important character does appear in the trailer, however. Shenhua, the mysterious woman from the prologue of the first game, looks to take a more prominent role in the sequel; a fireside conversation between her and Ryo is featured at the beginning and end of the trailer.

Sega has yet to set a Japanese date for Shenmue 2, but they've made assurances that once it is released it will be making the trip stateside.

1-18-01---- Yu Yu Hakusho Items

According to a post at this site relating an e-mail between FUNimation's Gen Fukunaga and Darent Sapphie of Juunanagou:

1. We will keep the original music.
2. We will try to preserve the content of the show but usually the broadcast network dictates how far we can go.
3. The release of tapes/DVD is usually driven by what our retailers tell us we need to create. They are the "800 pound gorilla" in this situation because most of a company's sales come from just a handful of major retail chains.
4. We are trying to get Steve to do the translations.

1-18-01---- Asia AICN Bits

Sent in by Daniel:

Interestingly enough, Battle Royale is also a hit in Hong Kong. As for Japan, there are some interesting tidbits, courtesy of AICN.

1)- Kazuki Oomori's ("Godzilla vs Biolante", "Natu, the Legend of the Dancing Ninja") next film will be "Run Ichiro!", which Toei will be producing. The film features 5 short stories in Kobe, a city destroyed by an earthquake in 1995. Japanese baseball star, Ichiro (who just joined the Seattle Mariners) appears as himself. The film will be released in May.

2) - Sony Pictures is getting closer to produce "Astro Boy", based on Osamu Tezuka's famous cartoon.

3) - Mamoru Oshii's excellent film, "Avalon" will be showing at a sixth of the total screen in Korea, which will be the country's widest foreign release. The film will open on February 3rd.

4) TV Azteca is currently running Sailor Moon (they have 199 episodes except 89, the episode was 45 mins long and the dubber Intertrack didn't want to cut it), Magic Knight Rayearth, Captain Tsubasa J, but because of complaints they mov ed Escaflowne from weekdays to Sundays at around 11 AM.

5) The magical girl St. Tail series has replaced Escaflowne in its 1:30pm weekday time slot. St. Tail has been effect by dubbing chan ges byCentral-America having name changes and the "god please forgive me" transformation phrase changed.

6)The rival national channel of TV Azteca: Televisa is rerunning Robotech and the first season of Virtua Fighter. They are premiering Digimon 01 and rerunning Pokemon. There are rumors they may get His or Her Circumstances and Evangelion this year. On the cable side of things Sakura Card Captors was premiered on Cartoon Network in November, but there is a strong demand for Tenchi to be aired.

7)Unicable (small channel associated to televisa canal 5) aired Revolutionary Girl Utena, renamed of El Anillo Magico, the Magical Ring in English, but took it off after deciding that the content was too strong for young kids. After seeing Utenas rati ng they decided to air Lost Universe, and have been very pleased with the show. There is currently a movement to convince the station to air the last 9 episodes of Utena.

8) Locomotion is actually not exclusive of the DirecTV satellite system, but it's also in Cablevision, but in the expensive packages only. It has many uncut anime, and on January 20 and then Jan 27, they will put a subbed version of AIKA in two parts. They will put this anime in their 2 hour long weekday anime exclusive "Japanimotion" slots. On January 21, they will premiere Ghost in the Shell in Spanish. They are planning to bring these anime later in 2001: rerun Blue Seed, Silent Möbius, Supermilk, Cybuster.

9) They had to remove Blue Seed after only one premiere run because they are currently getting new and better technology. "It's s bit bizarre, but it's a very good channel for the older anime fans, it even has "Those who hunt Elves II", which is not available in the USA. "

10) Fox Kids latin america (a cartoon/kids channel like cartoon network) will make an 4 days anime marathon beginning in February 24th, premiering the movie "PatLabor 1 Mobile Police" and "DinoZaurs" the series. In the marathon also will be Super Cerdita (Super pig, a Saban's adaptation of Tonde Burin), Genki y los monstruos Cibernéticos (Monster Rancher, of BKN), Flint el detective del tiempo (the time detective, of Saban) and "Digimon Digital Monsters" (dubbed from original japanese version / in japanese with SAP).

Mr. Asamiya is the creator of numerous highly successful manga series, both in Japan and abroad, including Dark Angel, Nadesico, Steam Detectives and Silent Mobius.

In Angouleme, Mr. Asamiya will be signing for his fans at the display of his French publisher and official sponsor of his visit to France, Marvel France-Generation Comics. Following the festival, Kia Asamiya will meet fans and sign books and comics at two prestigious Paris shops, Forum FNAC and La Bede. The mini-tour was arranged by Grand Design Communications, the licensing agency which represents the rights for several of Kia Asamiya's manga titles in Europe.

"I'm proud to be a part of this," says Grand Design Communications president David Bernstein. We're happy to have helped set up this unique opportunity for Kia Asamiya to meet his European fans in the atmosphere of the world's premiere comic book festival."

"I'm honored just to have been asked." says Mr. Asamiya. "The fact that the theme of this year's Angouleme festival is Japanese manga makes my visit all the more special. 1-18-01---- Outlaw Star CN Episode 2 Edits

Excerpted from a newsgroup post by Kyle Thomas Pope:

The editing was comparatively light this time around.

Taking a suggestion offered by a previous poster, I won't be noting every single substitution of an expletive. Suffice it to say that if you hear "heck", "darn", "blast", etc, a stronger word was originally used.
1. Scene of Gene loading the paint cartridges into his "blaster" cut.
2. Scene of thug clutching his balls after being kicked by Hilda cut.
3. Not an edit... The thug Hilda was interrogating was actually bleeding from his nose.
4. Scene of Gene taking a swig from his flask during the pursuit cut.
5. Ctarl Ctarl's "stop screwing around" changed to "stop messing around". (Odd since in GW Heero was allowed to say that he'd "screwed up".)
6. Scene of Gene taking another swig from his flask cut.
7. Gene's "oh, god" changed to "oh, great". (Strange since Jim got to say "oh my god" when Gene got shot by Hilda.)
8. Scene of sexual banter between Gene, Hilda, Melfina and Jim cut.
9. Hilda's "kill more of my friends" changed to "hurt more of my friends".
10. Blood removed from Gene's dad.
11. Gene's "bitching" changed to "whining".
12. Gene's "alright wiseass" changed to "alright wise guy".
13. Gene's "now you're gonna die" changed to "now you're gonna get it".

The GIA is reporting Final Fantasy X will have an "Okinawan feel"

Less than a week after the first screenshots and character art for Final Fantasy X hit the web, Final Fantasy X's overarching theme has already begun to emerge. Series composer Nobuo Uematsu described the game as having "an Okinawan feel" in his Weekly Famitsu column, and the game looks to reflect the unique culture of the island group located off the southwest coast of Japan.

Described by a Japanese friend of the GIA as "hot, Tarzan hot," Okinawa's tropical setting is reflected in the oceans and palm trees seen in the first released screens. The heroine, Yuna, is dressed in clothing reminiscent of Okinawan garb. In the native Okinawan dialect, her name means a type of hibiscus flower. Tida's clothes are a little harder to describe, but most noteworthy is the segmented nature of his lower sleeve, upper sleeve, and vest, calling to mind Japanese male formal wear. His name translates from the Okinawan dialect as "sun."

All this comes on the heels of the announcement earlier this month that Okinawan folk singer Rikki would sing the theme song for Final Fantasy X. The Final Fantasy series has regularly appropriated parts of more well-known Norse and Hindu mythologies, but Okinawa has its own history, culture, gods, and traditions. It will be interesting to see just how the world's most renown RPG series incorporates all these themes.

Also via The GIA, TendoProject today reported that a Metroid game is in development for the Game Boy Advance, according to a Nintendo of Europe press release. While a Metroid GBA title has yet to be mentioned elsewhere, this certainly wouldn't be the first time that Nintendo of Europe accidentally revealed details on an in-development project. Among other incidents, the company prematurely released GameCube information in an interview last year.

The GIA is finally reporting that in a recent interview, Hideo Kojima spoke about his two widely anticipated PlayStation 2 projects: Zone of the Enders and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. The acclaimed game designer assured fans that both games are progressing smoothly, due in part to the increase in staff working under him. Those awaiting Z.O.E's upcoming late-March release will be glad to know that the title is right on track and that the master version is nearing completion. Aside from a few minor adjustments, the game has turned out as its team had originally planned it prior to receiving their finished PlayStation 2 development kits.

Accompanying Z.O.E will be a demo of Metal Gear Solid 2. The demo will show off roughly 5% of the finished version and is estimated to take an hour to complete. It also includes a variety of difficulty settings to add to its replay value. Kojima went on to comment that they'll be aiming for 15 hours of gameplay with Metal Gear Solid 2, although the exact length is as of yet undetermined.

1-17-01---- Ghost In The Shell Named In 50 Best DVD's

Excerpted from the official press release:

Entertainment Weekly names Manga's Ghost in the Shell One Of "The 50 Best DVDs" (Week of January 19, 2001)

Chicago, IL- January 17, 2001 - Entertainment Weekly has named Manga Entertainment's cyberpunk Japanese animated co-production Ghost in the Shell an essential DVD to have in this week's feature article devoted to "The 50 Best DVDs" (January 19, 2001). The only Japanese animated film in EW's DVD charts, Ghost in the Shell once again proves itself an exemplary work of Japanese animation.

Recognized by Director James Cameron as "a stunning work of speculative fiction, the first truly adult animation film to reach a level of literary and visual excellence," Ghost in the Shell on DVD has also been highly-ranked in the following major publications: Maximum PC "Staff Picks," Home Theater "The New Flesh," Video Magazine "20 DVD Movies No Serious Collector Should Be Without," GQ "Best Way To Do DVD," and Hollywood Reporter "Hot Screens." In addition to its many other accolades, Siskel & Ebert gave Ghost in the Shell "Two Thumbs Up!" with Ebert remarking that the film is "Unusually intelligent and challenging science fiction, aimed at smart audiences."

"We are thrilled to see the 'Ghost' DVD as a Top 50 pick in EW. This extraordinary anime film is such a natural for DVD as it deals with science fiction and technology to the max. 'Ghost' is continuing to find new audiences worldwide and we thank all of our early supporters in press and retail as well as the Manga fans for giving this film the attention and success that it deserves" says Mike Egan, Manga's GM.

One of the largest competitive animation events in the world, The World Animation Celebration awarded Ghost in the Shell prizes for Best Theatrical Feature Film and Best Director of a Theatrical Feature Film in competition against over 1,500 entries from 56 countries including Disney's hit A Goofy Movie, MGM's All Dogs Go To Heaven II and MTV's blockbuster Beavis and Butthead Do America.

The most expensive and technologically advanced Japanese animated feature ever made, Ghost in the Shell was the first Japanese animated film to hit the domestic theatrical box office charts of both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter (4/12 - 4/14/96) and debuted as New York's highest grossing single screen exclusive (3/29/96). The film has continued to excel - to date the VHS has sold domestically over 300,000 units and the DVD is nearing 200,000 units. Ghost was the only Japanese animation film ever to reach the number one position in Billboard's Video Sell-Through Chart (8/24/96).
