1-31-00---- Largest-Ever SPE Domestic License Commitment Made With Encore Media

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Starz Encore Media Group, announced on Monday, that they have entered into a long-term strategic partnership to create and deliver filmed entertainment to Starz Encore subscribers. The agreement covers a number of areas, encompassing (A) the exclusive pay TV rights to upcoming SPE theatrical releases, (B) Subscription Video on Demand (S-VOD) rights for all current and future licensed SPE products, (C) extension of an existing non-exclusive second-run output deal, and (D) the licensing of more than 1,000 library titles.

Beginning in January 2005, the new pay TV output agreement grants Starz Encore the exclusive, first-run pay television rights to all films released theatrically in the United States by SPE, including Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Classics, for six years.

The pact includes the largest-ever domestic commitment to exploit the Sony Pictures Entertainment inventory.

It's currently unknown what Anime factors are, or will be involved in this agreement. However, given Encore Media's recent embrace of Japanese Animation Movies, OAV, and TV series from a number of domestic licensing companies; SPE Japan's mounting Anime catalog of first-class creations in Japan; and finally SPE's recent declaration of entry into the American Anime broadcast market by seeking an American outlet for the Rurouni Kenshin TV Series, this agreement may have wide-reaching implications for the Anime Industry in this country, the full results of which may not be seen for another half-decade.
