The Jubei-Chan TV series is based on a story by Akitaroh Daichi which ran in the Japanese AX magazine. Jiyu Nanohana is an average Japanese junior high school girl who finds herself persued by a seemingly young (but perhaps out of time) samurai named Adago. Four hundred years prior the legenday swordsman Yagyu Jubei left this student Koinosuke Adago with a dying wish to pass on the Yagyu sword fighting technique by giving his eyepatch to a person meeting the following requirements: "Pocha Pocha" (Plump) "Purin Purin" (Bouncy)" "Bon Bons". In the present day Adago is certain that young Jiyu is a perfect match to his lord's outline. Reluctant at first, she finds her herself slowly pulled into a conflict with roots in feudal Japan. Character Designs for the TV series are by Mutthiri Moony, Script is by Akitaroh Daichi. Seiyuu include Hiroko Konishi as Jiyu, Keiji Fujiwara, Ryutaro Okiayu, Tatsuya Nakazaki, Yuji Ueda, Chinami Nishimura and Rie Iwatsubo.Menus on Bandai Entertainment's DVD release stand out as very animated, colorful, creative, and cute. The Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound English audio track is one of this disc's best features, it will bring to life any moderately equipped home theater system, very rich background sound effects and voices leap forth from the speakers when compared with the 2 channel Dolby Digital Stereo Japanese audio track. The English dub work by Ocean is pretty concise after viewing the 4 episodes on this disc. Purists can take heart in knowing the translation work on Jubei-Chan appears equally well done, a nice addition is written word translation spread throughout to clue one in on some of the humor or meanings they may not otherwise be aware of. Extras on the disc include "Cooking With Jubei" - follow on-screan with Jiyu's step by step directions for cooking her famous Jubei-Yaki egg dish! 4 trailers are also added, there's the Blue Sub No. 6 trailer that was shown at AX and included on the Wanted 2000 DVD catalog, Cowboy Bebop and Gundam Wing trailers and the very nice Escaflowne TV series DVD release trailer shown at Anime Expo.
