According to Kyodo News, Osaka public prosecutors on Tuesday released the 21-year-old actor, who played the title character in "Ultraman Cosmos," a popular children's TV show, without indicting him on assault and extortion charges that police arrested him for last month, the prosecutors said. The actor's release comes after a 20-year-old man who had filed the case with police submitted a letter to the prosecutors in which he retracted his earlier allegations that the actor assaulted him and extorted money from him. At the time of his arrest, the Osaka police said the actor, at the age of 19, was suspected of beating the younger man, a vocational school student, and extorting 450,000 yen from him from September to October 2000. Mainichi Broadcasting System Inc., which broadcast Ultraman Cosmos, stopped airing the show after the actor was arrested June 14. The program premiered in July last year and was to continue through September. The broadcaster has received about 3,000 letters and e-mails from viewers who are unhappy that the show is no longer on the air and requesting it be reinstated.

7-3-02---- ABC Family Strengthens It's Anime Lineup This Saturday With Shinzo And Beyblade

Coutesy to David of ABC Family for informing us the anime adventure series "Beyblade," based on the fast emerging kids sports entertainment phenomenon, and the anime drama "Shinzo" will make their American television premiere on ABC Family, beginning SATURDAY, JULY 6. The two series are part of the network's new kids' summer programming schedule.

"Beyblade" -- SATURDAY and SUNDAY (7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., ET/PT) -- This cutting-edge anime adventure follows martial arts student, Tyson, as he perfects his technique in the extreme sport of Beyblade (based on a traditional Japanese spinning-top game called Bei-goma, now emerging as a kids sports entertainment phenomenon called Beyblade). While each customized spinning top is as unique as its owner, Tyson's is particularly powerful since he's learned to harness the mystical power of his Japanese ancestors. He joins a group of international youths -- whose tops also possess special power derived from ancient beasts -- as they embark on a quest to battle their way to the World Championship while thwarting evil challengers.

In the debut episode, "The Blade Raider," Tyson is at home practicing martial arts with his grandfather when suddenly he realizes he is late for a Beyblade battle with Andrew. When Tyson arrives, Andrew and his friends are met by a smart-mouthed kid named Carlos, a member of the notorious Blade Sharks. Carlos challenges anyone to a battle but the winner gets to keep the other's Beyblades. Tyson accepts. With the help of Kenny and his Bit Beast Dizzi, an energy animal avatar who has merged with his laptop, Tyson prepares for the big battle, which he handily wins. Just as the fight is over, the Blade Sharks' leader Kai shows up and a new battle begins between Kai and Tyson.

The executive producers are Michael Hirsh, Toper Taylor and Scott Dyer. The series is produced by Nelvana and d-Rights, Inc. (TV-Y7)

"Shinzo" - SATURDAY and SUNDAY (7:30 a.m., ET/PT) -- This anime action series is set in a time when mutants -- known as Enterrans -- rule the world. It's up to the last surviving human, Yukomo, to search out the mysterious Shinzo, which contains the key to saving mankind from extinction.

In the first episode, "The Awakening," Yakumo awakens from a 500-year hyber-sleep only to discover that mankind has been eradicated from Earth. A message left by her father in Hakuba, a multi-purpose vehicle programmed to protect Yakumo, instructs Yakumo to seek out a place called Shinzo. On her journey to find Shinzo, Yakumo befriends Mushra, a young Enterran warrior and Saago, Mushra's old friend.

When the four travelers stop at a nearby town to re-fuel Hakuba, Mushra's evil enemy, Karas, detonates the town's fuel tank and then blames the four travelers for the tank's lethal explosion. While Saago and Hakuba escape the clutches of the outraged townsfolk, Yakumo and Mushra are captured and hoisted above a raging fire. With only seconds to spare before the two fall into the fiery pit, Mushra quickly transforms into Hyper Mushra and saves Yakumo from a frightening demise.

The executive producer is Eric S. Rollman and the producers are Tarow Iwamoto and Kauichi Yada. The series is a production of Toei Animation Co., Ltd. and BVS Entertainment, Inc. (TV-Y7-FV)

7-2-02---- Newtype USA Press

From the release:

JAPAN’S #1 ANIME MAGAZINE “NEWTYPE” TO MAKE ITS ENGLISH DEBUT IN AMERICA THIS JULY

ADV FILMS TO PUBLISH POPULAR MONTHLY MAGAZINE FOR AMERICAN AUDIENCES

HOUSTON, July 2, 2002 – A.D. Vision, Inc. (“ADV”), the #1 producer-distributor of Japanese animation in North America, is proud to announce the signing of a long term agreement with top Japanese publisher and multimedia company Kadokawa Shoten, LTD. to localize, publish and distribute an English language version of Japan's premiere anime magazine, Newtype, on an exclusive basis throughout America and the English speaking world.

Newtype USA will make its anticipated debut with a special collector’s edition “Convention Teaser” at July’s Anime Expo convention in Long Beach, California and the San Diego Comic-Con International in August. The first newsstand edition of Newtype USA will go on sale this fall, and will be available through subscription and at specialty stores across the nation.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Newtype to America,” ADV President and CEO John Ledford said. “It’s a tremendous magazine, and something we’ve needed here for a long time. American fans have been clamoring for years to get a magazine that offered a comprehensive look at the world of anime, up close and in depth. What better way to give them what they want than by bringing over Japan’s authority on the subject? This is going to rock the anime industry to its very foundation.”

Newtype has a monthly circulation of over 300,000 in Japan. ADV’s marketing push for the magazine will reach potential subscribers through the upcoming Newtype website (www.newtype-usa.com), through ADV’s massive customer database and through subscription cards inserted into the company’s DVD titles. ADV forecasts over 1,000,000 new readers within the first two years of publishing.

With its comprehensive coverage and stylistic portrayal of the anime industry, the Newtype brand appeals both to the established fan base and to new initiates to the genre, and has played a tremendous part in the success of many top anime properties over its publishing history. Exposure from Newtype’s regular manga reprints, a tradition that will be carried on in Newtype USA, has also turned many manga titles into successful entertainment franchises.

Newtype USA will be unlike any other anime magazine available today, in that it will be published in the Japanese right-to-left format, instead of the traditional English-language left-to-right format.

“We thought we could really enhance the reading experience by having Newtype USA mirror its counterpart’s format,” Ledford said. “I think it will be a really unique, fun thing that the fans will enjoy.”

The Convention Teaser features a cover story on Japan’s hottest television anime series, “RahXephon,” spotlights on popular new American anime imports, feature stories on Japanese culture, behind the scenes interviews with creative talent, the English language premiere of the Full Metal Panic manga, and much more.

7-2-02---- Japanese Cult Cinema American Scene Scoops

Perhaps the biggest scoops to come from a recent visit to the Egyptian theater by ANS contributors Daniel Zelter and Nick O'Malley are details from the world of Japanese Cult Cinema. Nick talked to author Patrick Macias who has published the defining English language work on the subject of Japanese Cult Cinema, TokyoScope: THE JAPANESE CULT FILM COMPANION.

According to Patrick, Ichi the Killer has been picked up for U.S. release. While Shogakukkan does own the Ichi manga, it's unlikely that Viz will release it in the USA, due to the graphic violence. (the movie itself was reportedly toned down from the manga.) According to Macias, Viz also definitely does not own the Battle Royale movie; although the novel is slated to come out next year in the Spring. As for live-action films on dvd, they're all currently in the TBA stage, except for Sanctuary, which Viz can't secure, because of reported expensive music rights. Viz doesn't own Dead or Alive 2, Kino does. No publicly acknowledged company owns Dead or Alive 3. As for the original Ring movie, Tri Mark owns it, but has reportedly not decided the rollout plans for it.

Macias believes the next big trend for Hollywood studios-after Hong Kong movies-will be picking up more and more Japanese horror films. Finally, Viz intends to put out more Phoenix manga. Finally Viz reportedly plans to release more Junji Ito(Uzumaki, Tomie) manga.
