ALLENDALE, MI - The eighth annual Japanese Animation, Film, and Art Festival (JAFAX (http://www.jafax.orghttp://www.jafax.org) - pronounced jay-fax) will be taking place on June 21st & 22nd, 2003 on the Allendale Campus of Grand Valley State University. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Most of the event will be housed in Henry and Padnos Halls, as in previous years, but some events will be held in other locations around campus, due to expected attendance and size constraints of the current rooms. As always, admission is free and all ages are welcome.
The focus of JAFAX is to introduce the general public to Japanese culture through the use of popular entertainment media, namely anime and manga. At the same time, the event serves as a place for those who are already fans to meet with others who share similar interests.
For the existing fan, there will be several premiers of domestic anime titles shown throughout the course of the weekend, although no titles can be released at this time. For the attendee who is merely curious as to what this is all about there will screenings of both newer and classic anime titles to whet their appetite. All titles will be rated in terms of age-appropriateness, and there will be at least one "kid-friendly" title being shown at any given time.
In addition to showing a wide variety of anime on three theater-size screens and several smaller venues, JAFAX also brings in guests from the domestic side of anime and manga to speak with attendees about the industry, the guest's involvement in it, and how others might also become involved. This year's returning guests are Doug Smith of IC Entertainment, Robert DeJesus of Studio Capsule, voice actress Amy Howard-Wilson, and fan artist James Dawsey, who will be joined by first-year guests Scott Frazier and Bruce Lewis. Much like last year, these guests will be participating in a variety of panels and activities over the weekend, as well as being on hand to answer questions and sign autographs.
In addition to our guest panels, several game shows will be featured, including "Win the Dunce's DVD's", "Anime Pictionary", and the well-received "Let's Make an Anime Deal" from last year's closing ceremonies. Of course, JAFAX wouldn't be complete without "Iron Man Otaku" and the costume contest, plus there are a few surprises planned, as always. If that isn't enough to keep you busy, there will be several vendors of anime, manga, and Japanese import toys; an artist's alley featuring fan and professional artists drawing in the anime style; and a martial arts demonstration.
TOKYOPOP® ANNOUNCES SIX EXHILARATING NEW GRAPHIC NOVELS SET TO SIZZLE THIS SUMMER:
The Kindaichi Case Files, Under The Glass Moon, Gravitation, Brain Powerd, Pet Shop of Horrors and Vampire Game
Los Angeles, CA (March 25, 2003) TOKYOPOP®, the leading and most prolific U.S. manga publisher, will release six new graphic novels based on a diverse range of topics: mystery, gothic fantasy, music and aliens. All are set to hit store shelves beginning June 2003.
The Kindaichi Case Files (Action / Adventure, Volume 1 – The Opera House Murders: June 10, 2003) A cross between Sherlock Holmes and The Hardy Boys, this hot property has spawned two feature films and a full-season anime TV series in Japan. The manga, which originally appeared in Japan’s Weekly Shounen Magazine, follows the adventures of teenaged sleuth Kindaichi. In each self-contained volume, Kindaichi visits a new unsolved murder scene, where he uses ingenuity and cool magic to solve mysteries involving ghosts, curses, myths and folklore.
Under The Glass Moon (Fantasy / Romance / Horror, Volume 1: June 10, 2003) This supernatural gothic fantasy features highly detailed artwork and the addictive appeal of a soap opera. Enter the world of Luka Reinhardt, the 21st Century’s greatest Dark Wizard… and a fashion connoisseur! When he and his bookish brother Luel become involved with their lusty neighbors -- a pair of mother and daughter witches – it’s a love pentagram, especially when Luel’s ex shows up! Things continue to heat up after Luka’s overzealous apprentice unleashes Efreet, a wrathful fire spirit!
Gravitation (Comedy / Romance, Volume 1: June 10, 2003) Created by Maki Murakami, Gravitation delivers a colorful depiction of the music biz with edgy shonen-ai flair. Shuichi Shindou is determined to be the next rock star. He hopes to astound the world with his powerful lyrics in spite of the harsh criticism of the handsome and enigmatic romance writer, Eiri Yuki. Shuichi forces himself into Yuki’s life and the two men find their futures inexorably and romantically intertwined on a rock-and-roll roller coaster ride!
Brain Powerd (Sci-Fi / Action / Adventure, Volume 1: June 17, 2003) From Yoshiyuki Tomino, creator of Gundam, comes this story about Orphan, an oceanic base that holds the key to planetary destruction. Leading the fight against Orphan is U.N. agent Hime Utsumiya, the pilot of a living alien Brain Powerd mecha. In a chance encounter, Hime meets Yu Isami, a pilot working for Orphan. Will she be able to convince Yu to rebel against the mysterious base and go rogue? Mankind’s fate hangs in the balance.
Pet Shop of Horrors (Fantasy / Horror, Volume 1: June 17, 2003) Reminiscent of The Twilight Zone, each volume from manga-ka Mari Akino contains four stories of terror and wonder that expose the core of human nature. A smoke-filled alley in Chinatown harbors Count D’s Pet Shop. The Count prides himself on selling Love and Dreams in the form of magical creatures that come with an exclusive contract. But buyers beware: if the contract is broken, Count D cannot be held accountable for what happens.
Vampire Game (Action / Adventure / Fantasy, Volume 1: June 17, 2003) This is the dramatic story of ancient rivalries that explode when the soul of a vampire is reincarnated. Centuries ago, the King of Saint Pheliosta and the Vampire King, Dusel, had a monumental duel. Dusel was defeated and swore that he would return to seek revenge in his next life. Reborn as a wildcat, Dusel is picked up from the wild by Ishtar, the great-granddaughter of his nemesis, Phelios. The fate of ages is reawakened, and now a new vampire game begins.
In 2002, revenues from comic magazines amounted to 274.8 billion yen, and from comic paperbacks, to 248.2 billion yen, according to figures compiled by The Research Institute for Publications. Comic magazines and books together rang up 22.6 percent of all publishing-industry sales. In terms of units sold, comics took a 38.1 percent market share.
For manga publishers, however, recent years have been anything but rosy. Earnings on the 281 comic magazines published last year fell by 3.1 percent -- the seventh year-on-year drop. Meanwhile, comic paperbacks eked out a 0.1 percent gain. In other words, the industry, particularly its magazine sector, has been sliding downhill since its 1995 peak. The best-selling manga magazine, Shonen Jump, once moved more than 6 million copies per issue. That total is now down to 3.2 million.
TOKYO Hayao Miyazaki, the director of "Spirited Away," which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film, said Monday he finds it hard to celebrate the prize because of what is going on in the world, apparently referring to the war in Iraq.
Miyazaki, who did not attend the 75th Annual Academy Awards ceremony held in Los Angeles on Sunday, said in a handwritten statement, "It is regrettable that I cannot rejoice from my heart over the prize because of the deeply sad events taking place in the world."
"However, I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to all my friends who have lent their effort in releasing 'Spirited Away' in the United States and to all those who have shown their appreciation of the movie," the statement said.
At Tokyo's Studio Ghibli, which created the movie, staff applauded and shouted with joy on hearing about the Oscar prize.
However, Miyazaki did not appear at the studio to talk to reporters.
Producer Toshio Suzuki, who gave a press conference, said, "In the normal course of events, Miyazaki should be making a speech. But he has said that he cannot be truly joyful because of the times we are in now. He has said that he cannot bear to have media broadcasting his happy face."
Suzuki said that it was "most moving" to think that "Spirited Away" was initially rejected by a major U.S. movie distributor as unsuitable for the U.S. market, but that it has gone on to win such a prestigious prize.
According to Animaxis, in place of Director Miyazaki, the producer of Studio Ghibli Toshio Suzuki, and several other representatives from the production sponsors are planned to attend the awards as substitutes.

New York, NY – The Big Apple Anime Fest (BAAF), the world's largest anime film festival, announced today that the Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency (KIPA) will support BAAF 2003 as a Leadership Sponsor. It is the first time that the Korean government organization will promote the Korean animation industry through film festival and fan convention activities in the United States. KIPA will support BAAF via world premieres of leading Korean animation films, through weekend-long video screenings, and by introducing leading Korean creative talent to the US anime and d manga fan base.
Mr. Seung-Won Park, Director of the Digital Content Business Group of KIPA, commented that, "Korean animation is becoming recognized on the global level. We at KIPA feel that participation in the Big Apple Anime Fest in New York City is one of the best ways to expose our country's accomplishments directly to the most eager fans of the genre. For years, Korea has produced 2D animation content for the worldwide industry as one of the best service providers, and now, based on our 2D animation experience, Korea produces the highest quality of 3D animation content with creative technology and competitive costs compared with other animation producing countries. We eagerly await the reactions of the U.S. fans when we showcase our animation at BAAF."
“We are extremely excited about KIPA’s participation,” said Ryoko Maebayashi, Liaison Manager at BAAF. “It is a quite interesting and fortunate opportunity for BAAF. ‘Anime and Manga’ are often considered to be Japanese products, but we at BAAF consider Anime Manga Culture to be a worldwide phenomenon. This year, we are planning to bring in hot premieres and creative guests from Korea, in addition to great films, videos, and talent from Japan. Our U.S. fans will once again experience the borderless phenomenon of Anime Manga Culture at BAAF 2003, which has already become the international anime event to attend.”
