5-22-00---- Fanboy Entertainment Now Online

Excerpted from the official press release:

New York, NY - Fanboy Entertainment Launches Official Website

Fanboy Entertainment is pleased to announce the launch of their new website, http://www.fanboyinc.com. The official home page of the company, www.fanboyinc.com will serve as an ever-expanding online resource for all manga, anime and comic book fans.

"We're pleased to finally have www.fanboyinc.com up and running.", comments C.B. Cebulski, Fanboy Entertainment's publisher. "An online presence is a must in this day and age, and we are already a little behind in the game by just getting rolling now. However, we didn't want to launch until we had a little content under our belts. Now fans of any of our products and series can go up to the site and find out what we are all about and see what else we have going on. I'm pleased with what we have to offer online now but can¹t wait to see the site grow and expand over the months to come. This is just the beginning."

At www.fanboyinc.com, viewers can find art and info from all of the titles Fanboy is associated with; from manga and anime series like Dark Angel and Steam Detectives, to the works of Dan Brereton and Andi Watson, to new, original properties like Sidekicks and Spellbound. It's all there. Updates and exclusives features will become commonplace.

News will be updated daily. "Every morning, I check about 15 different websites to catch up on all the news I am interested in reading about. My list ranges from Japanese anime and manga sites that report on projects and trends in Japan to comic and toy sites here. I want to try and take the most interesting news items from those sites and incorporate them into the Fanboy news section. I also am going to be personally commenting on certain articles, adding a little twist to your average news report. I am a fanboy after all. I am not with my opinion in all this.", Cebulski jokes. "If I know about it, I want you to know about it. And I want you to know what I think about it."

Cebulski continues, "One of the main things we hope to do with www.fanboyinc.com is bring a wider range of people with different interests together under one site. From my surfing now, I see manga fans frequenting manga sites, anime fans at anime sites and comic fans at comic sites. There doesn't seem to be a lot of cyber-mingling happening yet. The news, chats, message boards and forums all remain very specific to each site. I think there is a lot of crossover between the genres that is being neglected. I know plenty of comic fans who are interested in manga; there are anime fans who love color comics. I want them all to be able to come together at www.fanboyinc.com and share their passions with each other. I see our forums as being key in this. I can¹t wait to see how it all develops."

5-22-00---- Editorial: What Is Anime

The following is an essay writen and sent in by M. S. Naylor. Editorial opinions do not neccesarily reflect those of Anime News Service or the writers / editor.

What is Anime?

Within the last few years, animation on television has opened its borders. Now, Americanized Japanese cartoons air on television playing on three major networks - Fox, The WB, and The Cartoon Network. With American and Japanese cartoons playing consecutively they cannot help to be labeled and compared. According to Richard Corliss of Time magazine, "[a]n American cartoon is simple to define. It's Disney - the Disney style of romantic realism, questing kids and cute critters". This idea passes quite easily for the definition of an American cartoon, but what are Japanese cartoons?

Japanese animation, or Anime, is a distinct animation genre developed specifically in Japan. Presently, with the explosion of Pokemon (Pocket Monsters) toys, memorabilia, and a top rated television show; Digi-mon (which plays on the Fox Channel), along with Monster Rancher, Anime is known to the general public as adventurous cartoon children with cute monsters. This ideal does not veer to far from Corliss' - which may explain its popularity. Regardless, to Corporate America, these "foreign cartoons" mean hefty profits. "Hasbro paid $325 million dollars to market the [Pokemon] toys" (Chua-eoan Larimer 82) showing the importance of owning the rights to distribute toys for a top-watched T.V show. The Cartoon Network's afternoon block "Toonami" airs Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing - cartoons originally from Japan. According to Bandai Entertainment, via Anime News Service, on February 16, 2000 "…Gundam Wing has maintained it's No. 1 position not just on the Toonami block, but against the entire Cartoon Network lineup" (Anime News Service). Gundam Wing, a story about children and their fighting robots, surpassed long time top rated cartoons creating its security for consistent high ratings and paving way for merchandising. Yet, beyond moneymaking and monsters, there is a more adult view of Japanese animation.

Before the airing of Pokemon and other such cartoons, America viewed Anime characters and the genre itself as "…[t]hose Frisbee-eyed kids, the guys with their steel-sinewed biceps, the heroine's celluloid bosoms that defy gravity and logic - with all spikey hair" (Corliss 94). The definition itself emits adult content; and it is. The landmark film Akira, based on the comic by the same name, debuted in Japan in 1988 and in America in 1989. Akira is a science fiction thriller about post-apocalyptic teens, motorbikes, and a supernatural psychic machine. An article in Animerica, an animation publication, cites "[t]he long standing cliché that "cartoons are just for children" was shattered in a bold, visionary, sci-fi spectacle" (Marcias 15). The film itself announced to America an aspect of animation unheard of to American shores. Yet, not until later did America feel the potential of Japanese Animation in full. In 1996, Ghost in the Shell "…was the only anime to reach No. 1 on Billboard's Top Video Sales chart" (Corliss 96) integrating computer graphics and traditional cel animation into a fervor of exploding robots, super computers, and a cybernetically charged humanity. Roger Ebert commented in his review, ""Ghost in the Shell'' is not in any sense an animated film for children. Filled with sex, violence and nudity… it's another example of anime, animation from Japan aimed at adults" (Chicago-Sun Times). The concepts in the film are more sophisticated by the use of complex metaphors. For example, the "shell" is a known as the human body and "ghost" is the soul or individual awareness resides. It explored the meaning of being human in a world where machines are integrated with the body. It also questioned the idea, "if a computer gained consciousness, would it be alive? Would the components be the body, and the soul be its awareness?" Then, in the same year, the animated film epic film Princess Mononoke written and directed by animation master Hayao Miyazaki, was released. "In 1997, it became the highest-grossing film in Japanese history (later topped only by Titanic)" (Corliss 94). Released in America three years later by Miramax in October of 1999, Princess Mononoke asked another important question - "What happens when nature decides to fight back against human conquest?" These films themselves featured more adult themes that relate to American action, horror, and drama films rather than cutesy childish cartoons known to the masses. As a result, animation combines with a mature theme suggests that Anime is neither "just for kids" or solely for adults.
From the loveable Pokemon phenomena to the introspective technological thriller Ghost in the Shell, the few films and T.V shows that have come to America from Japan are just a taste of the true versatility of the genre of Anime. The dominance of Disney has stereotyped the animation medium where film has been reserved for the profound, violent, sexual, or dramatic works deemed for adults. Helen McCarthy, a British author of four books on Anime put it best when she said, "The major difference from Disney-style animation is the limitless possibilities existing in anime" (Corliss 94). And compared to films and television, there is little difference. Therefore, if Anime can tickle children and delve into the profound just as live-action film and television - Anime is an entertainment for all ages.

5-22-00---- Nelvana Questions And Answers

ANS reader and occasional news contributor, Steve Brandon has sent in some questions and answers fired off to Nelvana regarding their future plans for Card Captor Sakura, following are the questions and answers retured by Nelvana's James Dye:

Dear Steve, Thank for your questions. We have received hundreds of inquiries with regard to this property, so please excuse the delay if you haven't been satisfied with a reply/been able to find information by this point in time.

> 1) Will there be a French language version of Cardcaptors on the French version of Teletoon? And, if there is, will it >be the same as the French version, which airs on France's local version of the Fox Kids network, or will it use >Québecois actors?

1) Yes, the programs will air on Teletoon in French. We anticipate it being very similar to the version broadcast in France. I have not seen the exact edit aired on Fox.

> 2) Last week's press release @ http://www.newswire.ca/releases/April2000/27/c7742.html gives me the impression >that Sakura will still be called Sakura in English, but, on the page with the pictures to which you can get directly from >the press release, they still use "Nikki". So, will Sakura be called "Sakura", "Nikki" or something else? (If you ask >me, the obvious choice would have been Cheryl, a pun on "Cherry", since that's what Sakura means!)

2) We acknowledge that the captions under the E-pix image is most confusing. That content is out-of-date. It will be updated soon. Sakura's name shall remain the same.

>3) What will you do about the "affection" between Toya (Sakura's brother) and Yukito/Yue (the blond guy with the >glasses, who is a lot more complex character than he appears to be at first)? If you get rid of that aspect of their >friendship in the TV version altogether, would you also attempt to get Mixx to excise it out of their English >translation of Clamp's original manga? (Personally, I have to say that I really don't care what changes you guys >make to the TV version, just so long as the subtitled DVD version remains intact with no missing episodes. But Toya >and Yukito's affection for each other is a lot less obvious in the animated version than it was in the original comic, >so it might not be all that much of an issue.)

3) We are working with the WB! and Teletoon to provide episodes that will best please the widest possible audience, the WB!s and Teletoon's Broadcast Standards and Practices representatives, and of course conform to all U.S. and Canadian federal regulations with regard to content in the time slot and tier of broadcast it will fall into. That's really all that is appropriate to say right now.

>4) For the aforementioned subtitled version (preferably on DVD, preferably containing at least 5 episodes per disk), >you wouldn't attempt to also put the English dub version onto the same disk (presuming that the English TV version >is edited), would you? To avoid outrage from angry parents (upset that the show hints at affection between Yukito >and Toya) and outrage from angry anime fans (upset that the show is edited), I strongly, strongly suggest selling the >TV version and the unedited fan version separately. If I were licensing the video/DVD version, I'd suggest only >selling the unedited, subtitled version through a handful of retailers, possibly only through stores (re: not >Blockbuster or Wal-Mart) that appeal to the avid videophile (i.e. Montreal's Metro Video, or www.express.com). I >would be very upset if you guys didn't make an unedited DVD version available, but, on the other hand, I don't want >groups like the American Family Association organizing boycotts and protests against Cardcaptors should they find >out certain things about the Japanese version.

4) Such general input has been noted and is in the hands of Pioneer, perhaps the most respected distributor of Anime on DVD in the US, and Telegenic. They know how to offer product(s) in the best interests of the public, Pioneer, Telegenic, Nelvana, Kodansha - all involved.

> 5) Will you license adult-sized Cardcaptors t-shirts and sweatshirts available, preferably in male-friendly colours >(i.e. navy blue or black)? It took several years for them to release similar, fully-licensed Sailor Moon shirts >(available at www.t-shirtking.com), I don't want to wait until 2005 to get my hands on a fully-licensed adult-sized >Cardcaptors t-shirts!

5) I can't advise what the exact product line from our merchandise licensees will contain at this point. Your comment will be forwarded to the merchandise department.

I've always loved those stories. The "Mars" books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Edmond Hamilton. E.E. "Doc" Smith. Those stories have a kind of anything-goes attitude that doesn't demand constant rationalization by the reader."

A fan favorite (it has its own page on the Anime Web Turnpike, a honor shared by a small number of other hit series such as Dragon Ball Z and Ranma 1/2), El Hazard was made into two anime OAV series and the 26-episode TV series El Hazard: The Wanderers. Artist Hidetomo Tsubura gives the manga series wild action and expressive character designs, and also adds new events and characters, making it a completely new experience even for longtime fans of the anime.

No merchandising.no mercy.its just good old- fashioned violence!

In This Volume: It started with a brutal beating at a pachinko parlor, and now Bakune Young-maniac, moron or mastermind-has taken Japan's biggest crime boss as a hostage as Step One of his plan to rule the world! Soon, yakuza, police, hapless detectives and Bakune's former gym teacher collide as Bakune holes up with his hostage in Osaka Castle, and the manly men of the Japanese mob vow to do anything to rescue their boss! Can Russian-roulette-playing police chief Sorigami salvage the situation with his highly trained army of human robots? Will Johnson Membodeath, the ninja partner of Bakune's gym teacher, kill everyone in sight? This graphic novel brutally smashes the stories from Pulp Vol. 3, No. 9 through Vol. 4, No.6 into one battered volume.

Bakune Young is written and drawn by Toyokazu Matsunaga. It is 240 pages long and retails for $16.95 U.S./$26.00 Canada. Due to adult content and graphic violence it is for mature readers only.
