11-8-01---- Exclusive: VHD Bloodlust Potential Animated Feature Oscar Nominee

According to a post, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is also on the list of 6 potential animated films which could be nominated for Best Animated Film. But we won't know until early Decemeber which of the films have made it. The following was posted by an Urban Vision rep. to their message board:

Urban Vision has submitted the film application to the Academy for consideration. Now we all must wait until early December to learn if the film is accepted for the nomination process. Apparently, they won't say which films have been submitted until they confirm the eligibility for each and every one of them.

This makes Urban Vision the 3rd anime film we've heard about in regards to a potential nominee slot in the possible coming category for best Animated Feature. The other 2 are the Production I.G. feature Blood: The Last Vampire released in America by Manga Entertainment which reportedly did not meet the entry requirements for being too short in length and JIN-ROH also an I.G. production confirmed by Bandai Entertainment's Jerry Chu.

A huge thanks to Daniel for submitting this item

11-5-01---- Manga Goods Auction To Help U.S. Terror Victims

Thanks to Yukio-san (http://www.isdn-f.kanagawa.isp.ntt-east.co.jp/) for the following submission:

In the Manga museum "Ishinomori-manga-kan" about shotaro-ishinomori which opened to Ishinomaki-shi, Miyagi in July, this year, the museum exhibits more than 1000 manga treasures of a comic artist, an auction is coming up to benefit victims of recent U.S. terrorism. Goods up for auction include fan eye-openers such as a set of the original pictures and an autographed copy of "Doka-ben" "Abusan" of Shinji Mizushima acting as the antique wooden box which shotaro-ishinomori put away habitual use product in and building director and "the Osamu-tezuka comics complete works" that there are only 400 first editions. In addition, the author of "a bat man", a signature of Mr.Robinson enter it, and a square sheet of thick paper is exhibited by overseas. Because "the person whom there is a thing to bid goods and auction to be able to buy at the place for, and entered it early is profitable" (the person concerned) and says, an enthusiast seems to rush from the whole country. "Shotaro-ishinomori comes from Miyagi nakata - Town." There is a museum at the Kitakami River river mouth of Ishinomaki-shi of the same prefecture northern part. Manhattan island of New York looks very much alike when I look at Nakase that the building is built from the sky. Thus the pet name of a museum became "Mangattan." It is the time not to be the other people's affairs tragedy of Manhattan.

11-5-01---- Gamecube DVD Periphreal Update

According to Gamespot , Panasonic doesn't intend to release the GameCube dvd hybrid to the U.S. right now.

11-5-01---- Reiji Matsumoto Receives Autumn Cultural Medal Of Honor

Thanks to Yukio who sends the following courtesy of Goo News:

I heard a voice of joy to Mr. Yukio Ninagawa of the director whom Mr. Yukio Ninagawa of a director assumed that there was a meritorious deed in the field of art culture among voice autumn medals of honor of three joy, and was given a purple order to (66), Mr. Fujiko Yamamoto of an actress (69), Reiji Matsumoto of a comic artist (63). "World Ninagawa" was embarrassed in news of receiving a prize. It "is an eye, and a drama is a nose, and a visitor is a mouth, and an actor is the existence that a director seems to be an eyebrow when he takes the case of a face." It does not depend without cooperation of other people even if I make it great. It is an actual feeling that took together I got high evaluation by the making of big stage of a scale abroad since I made my debut by "frivolity full of true feelings" in 1969. It was known by strictness as I throw an ashtray and have attached it to an actor in lesson ground, but enjoys direction of the staff and ad-libbing young recently. I want to "become the director who had a fresh sense from now on". I want to work across a border [Yutaka Takahashi]

"I burnt with life for work of actress and devoted" myself. I tell that I bite you and close the idea that may have come over by joy till now. I have the 50th anniversary entertainment life next year. I hang a No. 1 mistake Japanese career, and the movie world enters it in 1953. The name became a pronoun of a beautiful woman. Though and in late years television moves a place of main activity to the stage, it is the valuable person whom it always spends it as a star actress, and came. "The vain thing that the stage will disappear instantly." But, as for this work, it is sent a dream and impression to ladies and gentlemen. If it was able to stay in a heart of the customer whom it looked at "that the stage of that time was good", it is the first joy [Yoshiko Kodama]

"The thing which Nobushi (free samurai) seems to have had with there being a comic artist from such a thing at the relationship far-off time." I am mysterious. But I am glad. An order of the father who was a fighter pilot of the army is defeat, and the for nothing sense that has been deserved is not forgot. "A father is pleased therefore, too." I reported it to the family's Buddhist altar which I worshiped rarely. The first work recorded by a book is a thing in a thing of 14 years old. It is painting 50 next year. I produce an anime for live broadcasting stage of a French lock group and come this year whether, furthermore, an invitation of filmization of "the Galaxy express 999" is overseas. "A moment of sailing that the second Industrial Revolution happens with IT (information technology), and my work is new." I have to expecting it then and thank fate [Mariko Naito]

11-4-01---- GMK Reviews

From Daniel:Another positive review of GMK is at Cinescape, here, It has one vague spoiler. Here are some excerpts:

"This was the best Godzilla movie we've seen in years, probably since Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla...At TIFF, we saw a subtitled version (specially done for TIFF), but unfortunately most people will not get to see the movie subtitled that way and therefore most of the underlying themes will be lost....This is not the typical Godzilla film where you could turn the sound off and still easily understand what's going on....Even though I've seen the film once, I'd have to see it several more times to truly grasp all it has to offer and form a final opinion about it. This is not a movie just for little kids."

A negative review by Daisuke Ishizuka is at G-Fan. Excerpts include the following: "Expectations for the film were high, and the immediate future of the Godzilla franchise is definitely riding on Kaneko's shoulders, but unfortunately, reaction from Japanese fans seems tepid....G-FAN correspondent Daisuke Ishizuka reports that the movie was "interesting," but that it is "not the 25th Godzilla movie." Rather, it is "the same type of film as TriStar's Godzilla movie." Apparently, Daisuke feels that Kaneko has strayed too far from the true spirit of Godzilla...Daisuke says it is typical of a Kaneko Gamera film, and many scenes are simply duplications of scenes in the previous Gamera films; Daisuke wishes there could have been more originality in GMK..."

And a review with real spoilers is available at Cinescape, here.

11-4-01---- General Flow Of Seiyuu's Career

Joe Petrow (http://www.joepetrow.com) has compiled the below essay:

From what I can tell, this is the general flow of a seiyuu's career:

Stage 0: Thousands of girls enroll in trade schools to learn the business. over 90% will drop out, 5% will move on to some other kind of "art", and maybe 2 or 3% move to Stage 1.

Stage 1: As part of the glut of cheap labor with no name value, they do the "grunt" work of seiyuu, performing as an anonymous voice in commercials, store pitches (I think Hisakawa Aya's voice still haunts the halls of an Akihabara Sofmap store), and any and every other scrap of work that comes their way, though they will still have to work other part-time jobs to make ends meet. KiraMelo was another attempt to make money off of the anonymous girls by pooling a bunch of them together. The strategy produced a small group of rabid fans, but not enough to continue the experiment. Again, 80% of these girls will drop out after an undistinguished "career", 10% more move into other arts, and the remaining 10% (about 1 in 400 starters from Stage 0) move on to Stage 2.

Stage 2: These are the seiyuu who get their "big break", such as a major part in an anime, or their own radio show. They get enough exposure to achieve "name value", and some coverage in the seiyuu magazines. Many will begin a grueling schedule of events to get them more known. About half of these girls will fizzle out in a year, but the other half may make it to Stage 3. Some very lucky girls get picked out of nowhere to be placed directly into Stage 2 for a big project (usually by being one of the handful of winners out of thousands of applicants, as in the Sentimental Graffiti games and TV series), but upon conclusion of the project, most of these hopefuls are destined to get bumped back to Stage 1 (or even Stage 0)

Stage 3: They've achieved enough name value and skill to get bumped up in class, and finally earn enough money to make a living off of their seiyuu work alone. They get multi-page, full-color articles in a seiyuu magazine, many times their own radio show. Some anime parts are written specifically with them in mind. Some release their own CDs or video collections. Seiyuu can stay at this level for several years. Some will eventually get married, or drop out of the public eye to do something less visible. Those who hang around for the long haul becoming one of the 0.02% of all seiyuu prospects who get to choose one of the two paths of Stage 4.

Stage 4A: Some seiyuu find that their true talents/interests are elsewhere, and drift away from seiyuu work in favor of their music (like Shiina Hekiru) or acting career (like Sakurai Tomo). Though still recognized as "seiyuu", they really don't do much seiyuu work most of the time.

Stage 4B: After a long and distinguished career as a seiyuu, they have so much experience that their value rises to a level that is too expensive for most companies to afford. Pretty much the only thing left for them is NHK Public Television Children's shows.

Stage 5: Retirement or semi-retirement from seiyuudom, but you are still so popular that you occasionally pop up on a television show every now and then. A special status saved for those who voice the most memorable characters of all time, such as Toda Keiko's Anpanman.

11-3-01---- Anime For Angelenos

Daniel writes in:

If you live in L.A., they're showing a double-bill of Akira and Princess Mononoke at the New Beverly theater on Nov. 18-20. The times for Akira are Sun: 2:40, 7:30; M/T: 7:30 and Princess Mononoke at Sun: 5:00, 9:50; M/T: 9:50 . When I say double bill, I mean you pay for one, and get to see the other for free! That's nearly 5 hours of anime on the big screen-for as low as 5 bucks-if you have a student I.D.! Note: The Princess Mononoke film will likely be the dubbed version. I also don't know which dub of Akira will be used. But if you want more info on how to get to the theater, go to http://www.michaelwilliams.com/beverlycinema/

11-3-01---- Misc. Items

All courtesy Daniel:

First the game news:

1)According to http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/news/0,10870,2820945,00.html , the Supreme Court upheld a decision that would block an Indianapolis law which would force arcade owners to separate violent games from the tame ones. The law would also demand signs explicitly stating the content was unsuitable for minors.

2)Also, according to Gamespot :

"SNK of Japan made the latest and final update to its official Web site earlier today, posting a farewell letter in both Japanese and English that confirms that the company is indeed shutting its doors. The company also posted a final desktop wallpaper image that features many of its video game characters."

Now onto Euro-AICN news at AICN :

1)"From december15th to 23th at The Forum des Images in Paris the new edition of Nouvelles images du Japon (New japanese images)will be on exhibit. It will be quite all devoted to Japanimation, with expected venues of people like Rin Taro. Films like Spirited Away (probably the only public advance screening before its french release on jan. 16th), Metropolis (Columbia announce some french release around feb-march) and many others (I've heard Satsohi Kon's Actress millenium...) will be screened there. Better, many directors and japanimation designers will stand some master classes. Buena Vista just re-released here last wednesday Princesse Mononoke with clips of Spirited away before main attraction....Anyway it seems that in France too there's some trouble with the distributors of Miyazaki's works....I've heard thorugh the grapevine that some big boss from Disney's french office has been pissed off by some story on the Mad Movies (in short terms, kind of french version of Fangoria) internet site about how these films are obviously distributed with bad faith on theater and DVD/ VHS by this company. He's supposed to have threatened this newpaper of trial. Maybe it's just some rumor but the story is no longer on the site since those threats...."

11-3-01---- GMK Byte

Thanks to Daniel for posting this news to the ANS mailing list:

Cinescape is reporting:

"Producer Shogo Tomiyama is describing himself as admittedly "nervous" about how well received "Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-out Attack" will be with fans and the critics. ""GMK" will be shown for the first time today at the Tokyo Int. Film Festival at the Orchard Hall in the Bunkamura in Shibuya. "I met with Mr. Tomiyama yesterday and the future of the Godzilla franchise rides on the success or failure of "GMK". "I was surprised to learn that last year's "Godzilla X Megaguirus" did not do as well at the box office as "Godzilla 2000: Millennium" the year before, considering that it was a better film. "Mr. Tomiyama is very much interested in what we, as fans, think of the new film. "Mr. Tomiyama also said that director Shusuke Kaneko had more control over the different aspects of the movie than more recent Godzilla directors (including suit design, etc.) This probably hasn't been the case since the days of Ishiro Honda. "I told Mr. Tomiyama that we as American fans would like to see this film (and GxM) shown in American theaters, "where they are meant to be seen", as soon as can be arranged. "He indicated that Sony Entertainment has not as yet exercised its option (i.e. first dibs) to present "GxM" in theaters or releasing it on DVD or VHS.... "In a few hours, I will see for myself whether "GMK" scores a home run or strikes out. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a grand slam!"

11-2-01---- Big O Manga Press

From the release:

The "Manga Meets Film Noir" Story THE BIG O LAUNCHES IN FEBRUARY FROM VIZ COMICS!!

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - November 1, 2001 - As announced at the San Francisco Metreon Anime Festival over the Halloween weekend, Viz Communications, Inc. today announced the February 2002 release of Hitoshi Ariga's manga The Big O. This manga is an adaptation of Bandai's hit Cartoon Network TV series and will expand upon the story told in the anime version by going beyond the series finale to give the full story climax. As part of the extensive line of Viz Comics, The Big O will release in a monthly, 48 page, black and white format with a retail price of $3.50 in the U.S. ($5.50 Canada).

Paradigm City is the city of amnesia - 40 years ago, SOMETHING happened that wiped out the memories of the residents, forcing them to recreate their culture from scattered fragments. In this world only 40 years old, Roger Smith is a "negotiator" - a go-between for police, citizens and criminals in high-risk diplomatic situations. But something else survives from the forgotten past. They are the MegaDeus - giant robots created by the city's former inhabitants, or perhaps by the forgetful citizens themselves. When crime and madness strike, Roger Smith brings the guilty to justice with the giant robot called The Big O.

In the premiere issue, The Big O #1, Roger Smith becomes involved with a mysterious dark-haired woman whose lover is a hardened criminal. Breaking into a memory repository, the pair threatens to destroy the memories of the city's residents unless their demands are met. Police lieutenant Dan Daston calls in Roger Smith to negotiate a settlement, but the two criminal lovers are only pawns in a scheme orchestrated by the master criminal Beck, who, like Roger Smith, has a MegaDeus at his command.

Author and artist Hitoshi Ariga, a robot fan with a distinctively bold, cartoon style, is best known as the most popular artist of manga based on Capcom's MEGA MAN (known as ROCK MAN in Japan). His personal Japanese website, "Ariga Megamix", is at "http://www.din.or.jp/~ariga/". The Big O Anime original story is a creation of Hajime Yatate at Sunrise, the studio that also created Mobile Suit Gundam.

11-2-01---- Godzilla "Retirement" Confirmed

From Daniel:

Source: Cinescape

"Hey folks, my good friends Loomis & Chung Nam Han translated the original newspaper article that was scanned and sent to me, and yes its true as of now: "GODZILLA TO BE DORMANT "Source : Nikkei Shimbun (October 29, 2001) "The original Japanese text was provided by Mr. Hico of "Don't be defeated! Japanese Godzilla" website "Translated by Chung Nam Han and Loomis Kim "FROM THE REMARKS OF TOSHIHICO ISHIDA, PRESIDENT OF TOHO '"Godzilla will be dormant for the time being. The recent Godzilla series has been repeating the same format - Godzilla beats city-stomping enemy monsters - which is uninteresting. There were variety of creative ventures in the old days. From now on, we will decide if we make another one after careful examination. "We are expecting that The Disappearance of Sen and Chihiro (aka Spirited Away) will break the highest-grossing film record by February 2002. However, we cannot assure you that there will be another great success like Sen and Chihiro in the future. It will be important that we establish a system in which we invest our limited amount of budget in films that can guarantee success. So we will select carefully which project will be produced or distributed in the planning stage...." "Also today, on Aint It Cool News[Asia-AICN section] this was published by their staff from Japan of which I am waiting for some kind of verification: "A Toho rep has stated that "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack" will be the last Godzilla film from Toho until Columbia's Godzilla sequel is completed. I wonder when will Columbia start production on the sequel... (Thanks to Peter Turdin for the tip)"

11-2-01---- Bandai H1 Status

Bandai Co, Japan's biggest toy maker, said on Wednesday it expects its first-half group current profit to have risen 12 percent to 11 billion yen ($90.12 million), up from the 18 percent fall originally forecast.

Bandai said in a statement that it would rack up 110 billion yen in sales, up 2.8 percent from an earlier forecast, for the period ended in September thanks to robust sales in overseas markets, particularly the United States.

It said the expected seven percent jump in revenue year-on-year reflected brisk U.S. sales of such character toys as Power Rangers and Gundam, as well as the company's healthy domestic online businesses.

For the full year ending in March, Bandai said it expects a 16 percent rise in group current profit to 19 billion yen, up from the previous forecast of 17 billion yen, on revenue of 220 billion yen, unchanged.

Current profit is pre-tax and includes gains and losses on securities investments and non-operating activities. Net profit for the full year is expected to decline 26 percent to 9.5 billion yen, up from an earlier forecast of nine billion yen. Bandai's DVD and mobile phone content businesses have also been upbeat, with 4.3 million subscribers now downloading animation characters such as Ultra Man and Hello Kitty from its Web sites on Japan's Net-capable cellphones, the company said.

Bandai shares soared 9.23 percent to 3,550 yen as of 0135 GMT, while the benchmark Nikkei average lost 0.85 percent.

11-2-01---- New Best Animated Feature Category Could Give Recent Anime Films A Shot At Oscar

According to Cinescape (11-1-01):

There's a chance that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences first year of their Best Animated Feature Film category may have to wait until next year.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the new category requires a minimum of eight cadidates for nominations before it is official enacted. At this point, there look to be only seven. The seven are: MONSTERS, INC., OSMOSIS JONES, FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN, WAKING LIFE, JIMMY NEUTRON, BOY GENIUS, SHREK and ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE. Any further potential candidates must have their papers filed with the Academy by 5 p.m. today, or the category will wait another year to be activated.

11-2-01 "In a follow-up to news yesterday regarding Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences new Animated Feature Film category being one film short of being enacted, word has it that a number of additional films might have just made the candidate deadline.

"According to the Hollywood Reporter, six as yet unidentified animated feature films were tossed into the application ring just prior to yesterday's 5 p.m. deadline, giving the new category 13 films, five more than it was required.

"While talking to the trade, Academy spokesperson John Pavlik addressed this new batch, saying, "It remains to be seen how many of these will qualify, but there's certainly a lot more room for maneuvering now."

"However, one other film didn't make it through. The trade reports that Manga Entertainment's BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE, was rejected because its running time was only 50 minutes long. The new category requires the features be at least 70 minutes in length."

11-2-01---- Next Mamoru Oshii Project

11-1-01---- Parappa 2

Thanks to Daniel for the following:

"Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that Parappa the Rapper 2 will be released for the North American PlayStation 2. The game will arrive in Q1 2002 in that territory. After taking a bit of a hiatus, while Unjammer Lammy did her thing, Parappa is back in his second musical adventure. The game features all new songs, but it retains the distinctive look of the original game, featuring colorful backgrounds and cutout-style characters. Many of the original cast members return, including Master Onion, but there are also several new characters in the game.

"The North American version will be virtually identical to the Japanese game--the songs and much of the story will remain intact. Sony does plan to remove two specific references to religion and alcohol, and an animation routine will be changed for the localization. GameSpot will have more as it becomes available."

11-1-01---- Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within DVD Easter Eggs

According to Cinescape.com :

"FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN features a cornucopia of hidden goodies and, as is so often the case, my thanks to the good folks at DVDreview.com for posting them a mere week after the film's video release. Start with disc two and got to "Highlights Menu" from the main menu screen, then press the "Up" and then the "Right" key. This will highlight an onscreen symbol and take you to page two where you again press "Up" and "Right" - twice this time - and then press "Enter." The result is a two and one-half minute CGI animated version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video.

"Going back to the main menu and again to "Highlights Menu," if you now press "Down" you'll access storyboards for an unproduced sequence. Go back to "Highlights Menu" again and select "Character Files." Highlight the arrow and the screen's bottom and then press "Right" two times for a slide show of vehicles from the film. Now, again back to "Highlights Menu" and "Character Files," but this time select "DVD-Rom Content." Then highlight the arrow at the screen's bottom and press "Up" to gain access to more storyboards. Lastly, from the "Main Menu," select "Play Documentary" and press your "Left" button to gain access to some character studies of the character of Aki Ross."

11-1-01---- Computer Virus Issue Attached To Power Puff Girls DVD Supp. Software

Thanks to Daniel for finding this item courtesy DVD File : "If you picked up a copy of the latest Powerpuff Girls DVD release Meet The Beat-Alls, you might want to wait before you pop it in your PC. Warner has announced today a recall of all copies of the disc, as DVD spreads the "FunLove" computer virus to any PC that installs the included supplemental software. Warner representatives said the virus somehow infected the discs at the duplication master, and with no way of knowing just how many discs have been affected, is recalling all copies. Warner has already pressed new, virus-free versions, so if you've bought the disc, be sure to return it to the point of purchase for an exchange."

11-1-01---- More HGUC Bandai Gundam's Spotted At North American Toys R Us

According to fan Prabal Nandy:

HGUC GP-01 (#001?), HGUC Gelgoog-FS (#002?) as well as the HGUC Dom Tropen, Gouf, Guntank, and Gundam at TRU (All seemed to be a pricy $17) (The Gouf, Guntank, and Gundam seemed to have more 'original style' box designs)

In addition, they also had the 1/144 Gundam versus Zaku kit from 8MST, the MG Gundam and Zaku, and MG RX-79... What was kind of interesting is the renumbered 0083-series HGUCs, which now are printed in 'profile' rather than 'landscape' form, with a whole LOT of English text on the boxes. Curious fact, the Dom Tropen is apparently descended from the Dom Funef, learn something new on every box, and there are nice descriptions of the origins of the various MSs! Somehow the boxes struck me as a little larger than the Japanese issue HGUCs.
