Urban Vision has submitted the film application to the Academy for consideration. Now we all must wait until early December to learn if the film is accepted for the nomination process. Apparently, they won't say which films have been submitted until they confirm the eligibility for each and every one of them.

This makes Urban Vision the 3rd anime film we've heard about in regards to a potential nominee slot in the possible coming category for best Animated Feature. The other 2 are the Production I.G. feature Blood: The Last Vampire released in America by Manga Entertainment which reportedly did not meet the entry requirements for being too short in length and JIN-ROH also an I.G. production confirmed by Bandai Entertainment's Jerry Chu.

Features the usual mix of video streams, fan events, masquerade, quiz etc as for out first two conventions held at the Grand Moat House Birmingham. Hopefully the switch of venue should remove some of the problems we had at the Grand. Our new home features a free hotel car park this time (as opposed to none at all at the Grand), again a central city location with plenty of accommodation and food available nearby, and an all ground floor floorplan for our event rooms.

Registration will open as soon as we have our website up and running as we hope to offer credit and/or charge card registration online. We will be doing our best to get a discount hotel rate for con goers.

In the Manga museum "Ishinomori-manga-kan" about shotaro-ishinomori which opened to Ishinomaki-shi, Miyagi in July, this year, the museum exhibits more than 1000 manga treasures of a comic artist, an auction is coming up to benefit victims of recent U.S. terrorism. Goods up for auction include fan eye-openers such as a set of the original pictures and an autographed copy of "Doka-ben" "Abusan" of Shinji Mizushima acting as the antique wooden box which shotaro-ishinomori put away habitual use product in and building director and "the Osamu-tezuka comics complete works" that there are only 400 first editions. 11-4-01---- General Flow Of Seiyuu's Career

From what I can tell, this is the general flow of a seiyuu's career:

Stage 0: Thousands of girls enroll in trade schools to learn the business. over 90% will drop out, 5% will move on to some other kind of "art", and maybe 2 or 3% move to Stage 1.

Stage 1: As part of the glut of cheap labor with no name value, they do the "grunt" work of seiyuu, performing as an anonymous voice in commercials, store pitches (I think Hisakawa Aya's voice still haunts the halls of an Akihabara Sofmap store), and any and every other scrap of work that comes their way, though they will still have to work other part-time jobs to make ends meet. KiraMelo was another attempt to make money off of the anonymous girls by pooling a bunch of them together. The strategy produced a small group of rabid fans, but not enough to continue the experiment. Again, 80% of these girls will drop out after an undistinguished "career", 10% more move into other arts, and the remaining 10% (about 1 in 400 starters from Stage 0) move on to Stage 2.

Stage 2: These are the seiyuu who get their "big break", such as a major part in an anime, or their own radio show. They get enough exposure to achieve "name value", and some coverage in the seiyuu magazines. Many will begin a grueling schedule of events to get them more known. About half of these girls will fizzle out in a year, but the other half may make it to Stage 3. Some very lucky girls get picked out of nowhere to be placed directly into Stage 2 for a big project (usually by being one of the handful of winners out of thousands of applicants, as in the Sentimental Graffiti games and TV series), but upon conclusion of the project, most of these hopefuls are destined to get bumped back to Stage 1 (or even Stage 0)

Stage 3: They've achieved enough name value and skill to get bumped up in class, and finally earn enough money to make a living off of their seiyuu work alone. They get multi-page, full-color articles in a seiyuu magazine, many times their own radio show. Some anime parts are written specifically with them in mind. Some release their own CDs or video collections. Seiyuu can stay at this level for several years. Some will eventually get married, or drop out of the public eye to do something less visible. Those who hang around for the long haul becoming one of the 0.02% of all seiyuu prospects who get to choose one of the two paths of Stage 4.

Stage 4A: Some seiyuu find that their true talents/interests are elsewhere, and drift away from seiyuu work in favor of their music (like Shiina Hekiru) or acting career (like Sakurai Tomo). Though still recognized as "seiyuu", they really don't do much seiyuu work most of the time.

Stage 4B: After a long and distinguished career as a seiyuu, they have so much experience that their value rises to a level that is too expensive for most companies to afford. Pretty much the only thing left for them is NHK Public Television Children's shows.

Stage 5: Retirement or semi-retirement from seiyuudom, but you are still so popular that you occasionally pop up on a television show every now and then. A special status saved for those who voice the most memorable characters of all time, such as Toda Keiko's Anpanman.

If you live in L.A., they're showing a double-bill of Akira and Princess Mononoke at the New Beverly theater on Nov. 18-20. The times for Akira are Sun: 2:40, 7:30; M/T: 7:30 and Princess Mononoke at Sun: 5:00, 9:50; M/T: 9:50 . When I say double bill, I mean you pay for one, and get to see the other for free! That's nearly 5 hours of anime on the big screen-for as low as 5 bucks-if you have a student I.D.! Note: The Princess Mononoke film will likely be the dubbed version. 1)"From december15th to 23th at The Forum des Images in Paris the new edition of Nouvelles images du Japon (New japanese images)will be on exhibit. It will be quite all devoted to Japanimation, with expected venues of people like Rin Taro. Films like Spirited Away (probably the only public advance screening before its french release on jan. 16th), Metropolis (Columbia announce some french release around feb-march) and many others (I've heard Satsohi Kon's Actress millenium...) will be screened there. Better, many directors and japanimation designers will stand some master classes. Buena Vista just re-released here last wednesday Princesse Mononoke with clips of Spirited away before main attraction....Anyway it seems that in France too there's some trouble with the distributors of Miyazaki's works....I've heard thorugh the grapevine that some big boss from Disney's french office has been pissed off by some story on the Mad Movies (in short terms, kind of french version of Fangoria) internet site about how these films are obviously distributed with bad faith on theater and DVD/ VHS by this company. He's supposed to have threatened this newpaper of trial. Maybe it's just some rumor but the story is no longer on the site since those threats...."

"Metal Gear 2 Producer Hideo Kojima has revealed plans to release a soundtrack for the long awaited PS2 action title, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. "The disc will feature 17 tracks from the game and is expected to be released on Nov. 29, as reported by Core Magazine. "I was surprised to learn that last year's "Godzilla X Megaguirus" did not do as well at the box office as "Godzilla 2000: Millennium" the year before, considering that it was a better film. "Mr. Tomiyama is very much interested in what we, as fans, think of the new film. "Mr. Tomiyama also said that director Shusuke Kaneko had more control over the different aspects of the movie than more recent Godzilla directors (including suit design, etc.) This probably hasn't been the case since the days of Ishiro Honda. "I told Mr. Tomiyama that we as American fans would like to see this film (and GxM) shown in American theaters, "where they are meant to be seen", as soon as can be arranged. "He indicated that Sony Entertainment has not as yet exercised its option (i.e. first dibs) to present "GxM" in theaters or releasing it on DVD or VHS.... "In a few hours, I will see for myself whether "GMK" scores a home run or strikes out. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a grand slam!"

This manga is an adaptation of Bandai's hit Cartoon Network TV series and will expand upon the story told in the anime version by going beyond the series finale to give the full story climax. As part of the extensive line of Viz Comics, The Big O will release in a monthly, 48 page, black and white format with a retail price of $3.50 in the U.S. ($5.50 Canada).

Paradigm City is the city of amnesia - 40 years ago, SOMETHING happened that wiped out the memories of the residents, forcing them to recreate their culture from scattered fragments. In this world only 40 years old, Roger Smith is a "negotiator" - a go-between for police, citizens and criminals in high-risk diplomatic situations. But something else survives from the forgotten past. They are the MegaDeus - giant robots created by the city's former inhabitants, or perhaps by the forgetful citizens themselves. When crime and madness strike, Roger Smith brings the guilty to justice with the giant robot called The Big O.

In the premiere issue, The Big O #1, Roger Smith becomes involved with a mysterious dark-haired woman whose lover is a hardened criminal. Breaking into a memory repository, the pair threatens to destroy the memories of the city's residents unless their demands are met. Police lieutenant Dan Daston calls in Roger Smith to negotiate a settlement, but the two criminal lovers are only pawns in a scheme orchestrated by the master criminal Beck, who, like Roger Smith, has a MegaDeus at his command.

Author and artist Hitoshi Ariga, a robot fan with a distinctively bold, cartoon style, is best known as the most popular artist of manga based on Capcom's MEGA MAN (known as ROCK MAN in Japan). The Big O Anime original story is a creation of Hajime Yatate at Sunrise, the studio that also created Mobile Suit Gundam.

11-2-01---- New Best Animated Feature Category Could Give Recent Anime Films A Shot At Oscar

There's a chance that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences first year of their Best Animated Feature Film category may have to wait until next year.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the new category requires a minimum of eight cadidates for nominations before it is official enacted. At this point, there look to be only seven. The seven are: MONSTERS, INC., OSMOSIS JONES, FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN, WAKING LIFE, JIMMY NEUTRON, BOY GENIUS, SHREK and ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE. Any further potential candidates must have their papers filed with the Academy by 5 p.m. today, or the category will wait another year to be activated.

11-2-01 "In a follow-up to news yesterday regarding Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences new Animated Feature Film category being one film short of being enacted, word has it that a number of additional films might have just made the candidate deadline.

"According to the Hollywood Reporter, six as yet unidentified animated feature films were tossed into the application ring just prior to yesterday's 5 p.m. deadline, giving the new category 13 films, five more than it was required.

"While talking to the trade, Academy spokesperson John Pavlik addressed this new batch, saying, "It remains to be seen how many of these will qualify, but there's certainly a lot more room for maneuvering now."

"However, one other film didn't make it through. The trade reports that Manga Entertainment's BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE, was rejected because its running time was only 50 minutes long. The new category requires the features be at least 70 minutes in length."

No, I am not talking about GITS2 here, Mamoru Oshii´s return to anime after "Avalon" is -now hold your breath- a comedy. Yes, a comedy, a gag-anime with the title "Mini police car". It´s a collection of 3 short stories from the world of "Patlabor" and will feature a lot of super deformed characters in the same vein like the "Welcome to Lodoss Island"-movie or "Scrample Wars".

Produced by Oshii´s fav studio Production I.G. "Mini Police Car" is scheduled to premier next spring as a douple-bill feature together with "Patlabor 3". Music is by Kenji Kawaii, Tetsuya Nishio will provide the ultra cute chara design, the essential 3D effects will be brought to you from IKIF ("Blood").

According to inside sources, the new CLAMP series Chobits and the long running GTO (of which TOKYOPOP has already announced their acquisition of the anime) are also due to hit bookstores in early 2002.

A 16th century Chinese girl named Ginga takes a position in a new emperor's harem in hopes of finding an easy file. Seeing her potential, an officer accepts her for training, but once in her positions she begins to see the complexity of her situation as conspiracies against the emperor become apparent.

11-1-01---- More HGUC Bandai Gundam's Spotted At North American Toys R Us

HGUC GP-01 (#001?), HGUC Gelgoog-FS (#002?) as well as the HGUC Dom Tropen, Gouf, Guntank, and Gundam at TRU (All seemed to be a pricy $17) (The Gouf, Guntank, and Gundam seemed to have more 'original style' box designs)

In addition, they also had the 1/144 Gundam versus Zaku kit from 8MST, the MG Gundam and Zaku, and MG RX-79... What was kind of interesting is the renumbered 0083-series HGUCs, which now are printed in 'profile' rather than 'landscape' form, with a whole LOT of English text on the boxes. Curious fact, the Dom Tropen is apparently descended from the Dom Funef, learn something new on every box, and there are nice descriptions of the origins of the various MSs! Somehow the boxes struck me as a little larger than the Japanese issue HGUCs.
