12-3-99---- My Neigbor's The Yamada's European Premiere In France

A The "Forum des Images" is an animation festival running from Dec. 15th to Dec. 22nd, featuring several Studio Ghibli films, including the European premiere of Tonari No Yamada-kun. Several other Miyazaki and Takahata films will be screened, and Takahata will be present at the screenings of all the films that he directed. Here is a digest version of the program:

NineLives is currently producing the 4th Princess Maker title which will be ported to multiple platforms.

Banpresto's SRPG, Super Robot War Compact 2: First Ground Eidosopic Chapter for WonderSwan, is scheduled for release in Japan on March 30th, retailing for 4500 Yen.

Rumor has it that Nintendo will release a new Pokemon title for Gameboy Advance, at launch this summer.

12-3-99---- Seikai No Monsho Sequels Planned

Sunrise's original anime sci-fi series Seikai no Monsho will return to WOWOW BS Ch. 5 in Japan this spring. A condensed broadcast movie adaption of the first series with new footage, "Seikai no Monsho Sou shu hen", will air, and followed by "Seikai no Tansho Tanjou", a 25 minute episode adapting a story that appeared in the Aug. '96 issue of SF Magazine. "Seikai no Senki", an original 13-episode sequel series will follow those.

12-3-99---- New Gaogaiger OVA Series

The upcoming Sunrise, 8-part "Yusha O Gaogaigar Final" has been announced as the last sequel to the popular brave-robot TV + OAV Series series. The first volume is entitled "Yusha O Shinsei" (The rebirth of the brave king), and will be released in Japan Jan. 21st. The opening single "Yusha O Tanjo!: Shinwa Version" (The birth of the brave king - Legend Version) goes on sale Jan. 1st.

Bandai will add the amphibious ZUGOCK from the original Gundam TV Series / Movies to it's "Mobile Suit in Action" action figure line,it will retail 1000 Yen.

Miracle House has just released new costumes for their Golgo 13 doll: a leather suit and leather jacket. Each retail for 4800 Yen.

12-3-99---- Pokemon Card Discontinued For Offensive Symbol

Nintendo of American announced Thursday that it will be discontinuing a Japanese language Pokemon card because a symbol next to the Goldbat and Ditto characters might be offensive to Jewish groups and Holocaust survivors. The symbol, which resembles a reverse Nazi swastika, is known in Japan as a "manji" and signifies good fortune. Predating the Nazis by hundreds of years, the manji also represents a Buddhist temple.

12-2-99---- Production Go For 3rd Pokemon Movie In Japan

(C) NintendoNintendo Of Japan has confirmed development is underway on the third Pokemon movie: "Emperor in the Crystal Tower". The film will be released throughout Japan in theaters this summer.

NEC Interchannel will be porting their Saturn love adventure game, Friends, to PSX, adding new characters and events.

Namco is working on a new PSX RPG, tentatively titled The God RPG. The game uses 2D characters and 3D background, with character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto (Macross). Japanese release is planned for sometime in 2000.

Takara will release Transformer Beast War Metals: Gan Gan Battle for PSX on Dec. 2nd, a 3D fighting game based on the anime. The game features 8 fully transformable playable characters.

Square will be developing 9 new titles for Bandai's WonderSwan portable system, they include games in the Final Fantasy series, Romancing Saga series, Seiken Densetsu 2 (Legend of Mana in US), and Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeons 2. All of these titles will be compatible with WonderGate (cellular modem periphreal) and WonderWave (linking to WonderSwan PS and PS2). Four titles are scheduled to be released in April 2000.

Due to an unfroseen emergency in Japan, Yoshitaka Amano (Character Designer on Vampire Hunter D, several Final Fantasy games), who was scheduled to make upcoming appearances in the United Kingdom at Birmingham, Brighton, and London branches of Forbidden Planet stores has canceled his current visit.

Konami will release an addition disc for Tokimeki Memorial 2 in Japan early next year, called Tokimeki Memorial 2: Separate Volume Hibikino Watcher Vol. 1 Append Disc. It will feature voice data of 3 corresponding characters that will talk in full voice through the Emotional Voice System when playing Tokimeki 2.

After the announcement of the delay of Final Fantasy IX, the stock price for Enix and Square have dropped sharply.. Square's stock price has dropped by 7.9% and Enix has dropped by 5.9%.

Sega of Japan will be putting over 300 Sega Mega Drive and NEC PC-Engine game titles on the internet, for players to download and play on the Dreamcast using emulation software. Each game will cost between 100 - 300 Yen.

ESP / Media Work's Dreamcast SRPG, Ouka Houshin, is out in Japan on Dec. 16th. The story takes place in the fantasy world, Oukahoushin, you play the role of a young girl who is training to become a fairy. During the quest you are sent out to defeata clan of evil fairies, who are gathering their negative chi. Different areas varrying levels of positive and negative chi.

12-1-99---- Tokyo Pop Adds J-Pop Content To Spinner.com

Anime e-commerce giant, Tokyo Pop, announced today an agreement with Spinner.com to expand its music offerings with artists from Japanese Pop. The catalogue of Asian musicians, the result of Tokyo Pop's partnerships with Asian music labels, will be featured over the next year on Spinner.com's Playlist-To-Go.

"Today's music fans, especially teens, are looking for a new sound that can't be found on a Top 40 radio station," said Mixx Entertainment CEO Stu Levy. "By collaborating with Spinner.com, the largest online music service, Tokyo Pop can introduce Americans to a new world of Asian pop music."

Visitors will be able to download new J-pop in MP3 format as well as view information on featured musicians. A link to Tokyo Pop will provide users with the opportunity to purchase imported albums and other related products. Featured Tokyo Pop artists include Else, Roboshop Mania, Our Hour, and more.

12-1-99---- Lawmaker Seeks Probe On Pokemon Craze

Roberto Cruz, representitive of the city of Ponce, in the U.S. Territory of Puerto Rico is calling for a formal investigation of the Pokemon craze after hearing reports of U.S. schoolchildren brawling over the phenomenally popular Pocket Monster trading cards. The Rep. filed a resolution on Monday calling for the government to investigate the effects of the rapid market penetration of Pokemon trading cards, video games and other toys made by Nintendo Co. Ltd.

"The Pokemon fever in Puerto Rico is notable ... something that began as a video game and is now flooding the collectible cards market," Cruz told reporters last week after filing the resolution.

Pokemon: The First Movie, in it's third weekend of release in North America drew in $7,105,860 over the weekend, dropping it to 5th place on the Daily Variety movie chart. To-date, Pokemon has grossed $77,724,392. Meanwhile, in it's first weekend of expansion to 120 thetaers, The Princess Mononoke (which is in it's 5th week of limited release) pulled in $318,772 bringing it up from the #34 spot to #26. To-date Miramax's limited Mononoke release has grossed $1,638,393.

11-30-99---- Scathing Fan Account Of Card Captor TV Series American Adaption

To those interested in how Nelvana's treatment of the American adaption of Clamp's Card Captor Sakura Anime TV series is progressing, an anonymous fan, in close residence to the Nelvana Studios has sent a rather disturbing account to Fushigi Anime, a fansub group translating the series into English while preserving the original Japanese story as closely as possible. You can read the account at Fushigi's site where they have posted it at the top of their main page in bright yellow.

11-30-99---- Viz Relaunches Websites

Tuesday, Viz Communications announced new Internet partnerships and the relaunch of 4 of it's websites, www.viz.com, www.j-pop.com, www.pulp-mag.com, and www.animerica-mag.com. They will auction autographed comics and graphic novels with online auctioner giant eBay. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Japanese Community Youth Council.

In a partnership with XOOM.com, Viz offers e-mail through MightyMail, an e-mail platform enabling fans to send messages on letterhead featuring their favorite Viz products. VizMail signed on 1000 members within the first two weeks. A content partnership with Amazon.com is also in the works.

Rumors that Tim Burton will direct an upcoming Astro Boy feature film have been quelled, at least for the time being, a source at Henson Pictures has been quoted as reportedly stating:

"We'd obviously love him to direct it, and maybe at some point we'd consider going to him, but right now we're just trying to work out the story."

Square has delayed the release of Final Fantasy IX for PSX to sometime after fiscal year 1999 (March 2000).

Enix has pushed back the release of Valkyrie Profile from Dec. 9 to Dec. 22nd, due to a last minute bug discovered during the testing stage.

Sega of Japan will perform an internal restructure next year, the 9 internal divisions will divided into over 10 separate companies, each will run on their own with their own funding, hoping to increase the profitability and effeciency of each divisions. In the future the company will shifting its focus on online and network enabled software.

Konami is working on Beat Mania III for arcade, scheduled to release in Japan sometime next year. A floppy drive system will be attached to the machine, to allow exchange of data on floppy disks.

11-29-99---- J-Pop / Seiyuu News

Yonekura Chihiro's new single, "Just Fly Away", is scheduled for release Feb. 2nd, the title track will be featured as the OP theme to the upcoming "Monkore Night" anime TV series, to begin airing on TV-Tokyo January 10th. The single will retail for 1,020 Yen.

Matsumoto Rika's new single "OK!", featuring the new opening theme to the Pokemon TV series is out Feb. 2nd listing for 1,050 Yen.

11-28-99---- Studio Pierrot Selling Magical Girl Wall Paper Online

Japan's Studio Pierrot has begun selling wall paper, bearing images from it's various magical girls series', on it's website: "Pierrot Magical Girl Net." Their shopping page is called "Magical Shop," and the images on the various wall paper include actual animation-cel scans, and original illustrations from the sketches of character designer Akemi Takada.

11-28-99---- Sailor Moon Musical To Celebrate 500 Performences

A special Sailor Moon musical: "New Transformation: The Road to Super Soldiers" will be held in celebration of 500 performances in Japan this January. The musical has been performed in Japan for 8 years and more than 340,000 people are estimated to have seen it to-date. The event will take place Jan. 12th-14th and there will be many attractions where atendees can meet the senshi and enter a new years drawing. The story of the musical:

"Searching for immortality as human beings, monsters from the medieval age approach Sailor soldiers. The battles gets heated up between Sailor soldiers, Undead troops and Count Dracle. Usagi experiences separation from her friends, conflicts, death... She overcomes a number of hardships and becomes a true soldier..."
