On Monday In Japan, Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori honored Tamura with an official commendation in a ceremony held at his official residence where the 25 year-old judoka was presented with a certificate and a plaque. Tamura mentioned after the ceremony that she was proud to have received the commendation by Mori who is a fan of sports. She also made the comment that at next year's Judo world championships, she hopes to achieve her fifth successive victory.
Tamura was nicknamed "Yawara-chan" after the popular manga series about a young female judo champ following her first victory as a 15-year-old high school girl, she attributes the name to her styling of a ribbon in her hair, and the fact that she had won a gold medal, just like the Yawara manga character. A journalist covering her first win wrote that her victory was like a story out of a comic book.
