Monday, the Tokyo District Court ordered leading video game makers Sega Enterprises to reverse its decision to fire a 35-year-old employee, saying that his alleged "poor performance" was not a valid reason for his dismissal. The court also ordered the company to pay him 3.2 million yen--equivalent to 12 months' salary. His superior reportedly told him in November last year to look for another job within the company, and transferred him to the so-called Pasona Room the following month.
The room--named after a temporary employment agency--is reportedly equipped with a single telephone and no windows. People assigned to the room are given no particular assignment, but are not allowed to bring books or any other personal belongings. They also must report directly to the company's personnel management section every time they leave the room, according to the court. "Pasona" type rooms are'nt unique to Sega, social critics have pointed to such rooms as an example of bullying by companies attempting to force employees to leave "voluntarily."
