11-6-02---- DVD Vision Japan Returns

From the announcement:5 NOVEMBER DVD VISION JAPAN RETURNS
Starting in May of 2002, DVD Vision Japan decided to establish a US desk. In July, the process of transferring some of our staff and equipment to the the US began. Unfortunately, shipping office equipment from Japan took longer than expected. Once we received our equipment in September , it was discovered some of it had been damaged. Then we were unable to get Internet service until mid-October. All of this bad luck kept us from making any serious updates for 4 months. We apologize for the delay and any concerns it may have caused.
Faced with all this unscheduled down time, we decided to revamp the entire site. First, we rewrote 95% of our old reviews, including working on the basic format for all reviews. From there, we worked on changing the look of our news page, eliminating old or incomplete pages, and add easter eggs, surprises hidden through out the site. Thanks to the generosity of companies like AnimEigo, TOKYOPOP, and Urban Vision, we were able to work on some brand new reviews as well. Everyday brings something new, so check back with us often.
Along with the redesign of the site, we have been working on the direction that DVD Vision Japan is going to take over the next year. Initially, we were going to review all DVD's regardless of genre. Well, our fans have spoken, and they want even more anime and Asian cinema reviews. So, we decided concentrate on those two genres (with special attention to movies based off of comics, nontraditional animation, and remakes of Asian films).
We were lucky enough to squeeze in an advance screening of the Dreamworks remake of "The Ring"! Check out our review of this international phenomenon.
We'd like to extend an open invitation to any company who has a DVD they would like reviewed. No matter if you're a big company or the founder of a small independent, no DVD will be refused (as long as it is a legal release). If you would like to submit a DVD for review, please e-mail us.
DVD Vision Japan is also looking for women to share their unique views and to help balance out our predominantly male staff. Of course, inquires are welcome from anyone . Please contact us at dvdvision@animefantasia.com for more information.
We hope that you like the changes. Without your continued support, DVD Vision Japan could never have achieved the success we now enjoy. We appreciate your patience during this rough transition and promise to be back on our regular schedule of updates and features in November.
We'd like to take this chance to extend special thanks to:
1. Scott Carson and his team at AnimEigo, who sent us Otaku No Video and Riding Bean , along with several others.
2. Joel Baral and his crew at TOKYOPOP. They were kind enough to give us a copy of GTO vol. 2 and copies of their Love Hina and Initial-D manga.
3. Keith Burgess and his team from Manga Entertainment . Because of them, we were able to get a copy of the first Neon Genesis Evangelion movie, Death and Rebirth.
Other new reviews on the site include:
AD Vision:
A.D.Police Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040: The Perfect Collection Excel Saga Gasaraki The Circle Opens Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 2 Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 3 Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 4 Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 5 Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 6 Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 7 Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 8 Zone of the Enders
BANDAI
Cowboy Bebop Session 2 Gundam Wing Operation 2 Gundam Wing Operation 3 Gundam Wing Endless Waltz
Thanks to our staff, especially in the budget department, for getting copies of all the above to us for review. A huge thank you to the folks over at Anime News Service, for their continued support. We could never do it without you. Things are going great, but we plan to make them even better. Keep on visiting us!

11-5-02---- ADV's Anime Network To Offer First 24 Hour/ Day Anime Programming Venue

ADV FILMS ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF THE ANIME NETWORK(tm) ON DIGITAL CABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME, QUALITY ANIME PROGRAMMING TO BE AVAILABLE ON CABLE TELEVISION 24 HOURS A DAY

HOUSTON, November 6, 2002-ADV Films today announced publicly the creation of The Anime Network(tm), the first television channel in North America dedicated to anime (Japanese animation) and anime-related content. The Anime Network(tm) targets the nation's estimated 85 million cable television subscribers, and seeks to capitalize on cable's increasing dominance in the world of at-home entertainment.

Initially announced in June, 2002 at ADV Films' 10th Anniversary party in Tokyo, and announced in the U.S. at ADV's November 2 invitation-only 10th Anniversary party in Houston, the creation of The Anime Network(tm) has the industry abuzz with excitement and speculation.

"This has been in the works for some time," said ADV Films President, Founder and CEO John Ledford. "Until now, the market and the culture haven't been ready for it. But today ever-increasing numbers of Americans are becoming familiar with anime and its distinctive aesthetic; they're curious about anime, they're hungry for it, and The Anime Network(tm) is going to deliver it right to their televisions."

Competitive Advantage While existing cable outlets have enjoyed strong ratings with limited blocks of anime and anime-inspired animated programming, The Anime Network(tm) will make fine anime programming available to viewers 24 hours a day.

"The Anime Network(tm) is the next logical step," said Ledford. "The television outlets that currently carry anime aren't meeting the potential demand; they offer very limited selections of titles, and only during very restricted hours. The Anime Network(tm) will change all of that, and we're excited to be leading the revolution."

Content The Anime Network(tm) model is structured around four categorized content areas: Action Zone, Sci-Fi, Comedy Incorrect, and Horror/Martial Arts. These categories are designed to include virtually the entire spectrum of quality anime, while contextualizing content for new viewers unfamiliar with specific titles.

Coming Up Coming soon, releases detailing geographic/service provider availability of The Anime Network,(tm) along with information about whom viewers can call regarding local availability; also, a sneak preview of programming that will be available in The Anime Network(tm)'s first months.

11-5-02---- Appleseed Manga Update

From www.studioproteus.com via Daniel:

APPLESEED NEWS! Special Announcement #1: As many of you know, we're going to be publishing the rare Appleseed Hypernotes volume material starting in Super Manga Blast! #25. This means not only the Appleseed material (which is actually the first few chapters of Appleseed 5) but all the rest--the Bounty Dog material, the Shirow interview...everything. That's the good news, and trust me, it took years of begging to get Shirow to allow me to release the Appleseed stories. The only bad news is that we had to agree not to collect them, as he doesn't want them collected until he finishes Appleseed 5. That means if you want to read this new material, you'd better start buying Super Manga Blast!, because that is the only place it will appear for the foreseeable future (finishing Appleseed 5 is not even on his schedule at this point...it could be five or ten years...or never).

So there you go.

If you're not already picking up Super Manga Blast!, now is the time to start!

Thanks;

11-5-02---- Newtype Doubles Print Runs

From the release:

NEWTYPE USA DOUBLES PRINT RUN FOR ISSUE TWO

ISSUE ONE (NOVEMBER 2002) VIRTUALLY SOLD-OUT ON FIRST DAY OF MONTH

HOUSTON, November 1, 2002-With the entire 30,000-unit print run of Newtype USA Issue One shipped to subscribers and stores, and continuing retail demand for the magazine far outstripping aggregate availability, Newtype USA is doubling the print run for Issue Two, to a total of 60,000 copies.

"We've been very pleasantly surprised with the response," said Newtype USA Executive Editor Bruce Haring. "We expected demand to grow steadily through the distribution of the first few issues, as readers realized the quality of the content we were offering. Instead, we've been having to turn away retailers who want to order more, and we've got readers networking on-line to track down the last available copies of Issue One."

National retailers carrying the magazine include Suncoast, Sam Goody, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Media Play, Waldenbooks, Fry's, Tower Records and Gordon & Gotch Canada (Chapters/Coles Books). Independent bookstores, comic stores and specialty shops across North America are also carrying the magazine. Subscriptions are available through http://www.newtype-usa.com; single issues may also be purchased through the same site. Please note that due to subscription processing time, new subscriptions will not begin for four to six weeks.

11-5-02---- Anime Hentai Comic Sales Case Update

Daniel sends us the following update:

From CBLDF

In a setback for First Amendment rights, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has denied the Petition for Discretionary Review of the "display of obscenity" conviction of Texas comic retailer Jesus Castillo. This appeal by the attorney for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund was a second appeal; in the first, the Fifth District Court of Appeals upheld Castillo's conviction in a 2-1 decision. The notice of the denial came via postcard, dated October 23rd, to CBLDF executive director Charles Brownstein. It said only, "On this day, the Appellant's Petition for Discretionary Review has been REFUSED." The only remaining course of action is an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The CBLDF board of directors is currently voting on whether to proceed with that appeal; a decision is expected by Monday.

Newsrama just mentioned that Charles Brownstein of the CBLDF will appeal Castillo's case to the Supreme Court. A response from the Court is expected sometime during the first half of 2003, but when the actual hearing might take place is unknown.

11-5-02---- Invasion: Anime Premiere

Thanks to DANEBRAMMAGE for this info:

This is roving reporter, film geek and anime fan DANEBRAMMAGE! I've popped in and noticed that there is a premiere that a friend of mine told me about. It's a documentary on the anime subculture in the United States. I had to tell you all about it, because I get so much of my info from your site. I thought I needed to contribute something to return the favor. It's the world premiere of Invasion: Anime. Now I haven't had a chance to watch it yet... they wouldn't let me sneak a peek at the screener, however it seems like it really has a ton of stuff in it. The WORLD PREMIERE is on November 17th in St. Louis at the Hi-Pointe Theatre. I think it's in St. Louis because we are somewhat at the epicenter of the country. Anyways, here's some info that I found in the St. Louis International Film Festival's press packet.

Sunday, Nov. 17, 10 p.m., Hi-Pointe U.S., 2002, 90 min. Director: Angela Alexander Producer: Angela Alexander

SLIFF hosts the world premiere of this documentary journey to the heart of the anime (Japanese animation) subculture in America. The advent of the Internet has helped anime to become one of the fastest-growing niche markets in film/video, and the critical and commercial success of such films as Akira, Perfect Blue, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away has increasingly moved anime from cult status to mainstream acceptance in the U.S. With director Alexander. Set to roll out for the entire month of November, the Rip ‘n Win sweepstakes encourages kids to visit the series’ Web site (www.beyblade.com ) where they can enter into a random drawing for a wide array of BEYBLADE toys and merchandise. First prize in the sweepstakes is one of every Hasbro BEYBLADE Top, Launcher and Stadium - a dream come true for any BEYBLADE enthusiast.

At the same time, BEYBLADE will also be featured on 4 million school cafeteria menus, which will be distributed in November to primary and middle grade schools across the United States. In addition to offering kids a BEYBLADE-themed game, the school menus promote tune-in for the BEYBLADE animated series as well as the BEYBLADE Web site.

A major ratings performer for ABC Family where the series airs seven days a week, (weekdays at 7:30 a.m., ET/PT and weekends at 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., ET/PT), BEYBLADE is also a successful line of high tech spinning tops from Hasbro. With the battle cry “Let it Rip!,” BEYBLADE is rapidly emerging as a global kids sports entertainment brand phenomenon.

“As demonstrated by its solid ratings on ABC Family, the BEYBLADE brand is rapidly capturing the attention of kids throughout the country,” said Tracy Ewing, Vice President, Marketing. “The combination of the BEYBLADE online and in-school promotions represents a significant reach out to kids and BEYBLADE fans to drive both tune-in and Web site numbers.”

11-4-02---- Power Rangers: Ninja Storm Hits Production

From the release:

The 11th incarnation of the multimedia phenomenon "Power Rangers" -- "Power Rangers: Ninja Storm," a live action series combining exciting action, humor and drama, begins production this week in Auckland, New Zealand. "Power Rangers: Ninja Storm" will air on both broadcast and cable television beginning in February 2003 -- on ABC Kids, the ABC Television Network’s Saturday morning lineup, and on ABC Family’s kids’ action/adventure programming block.

Douglas Sloan and Ann Austen, former writers and producers on "Power Rangers" (1993-97), return as executive producers. Koichi Sakamoto, a sixteen-year veteran of the global franchise, is the co-executive producer and episodic director. Janine Dickens is the producer.

Boosted by martial arts-based action and adventure, the stories revolve around ordinary teens who take on extraordinary powers to defend the world when intergalactic evil threatens the Earth. Told from the power teens point of view, the episodes feature the teens in both their "civilian" and "superhero" lives as they struggle to grow up and grow into their roles as heroes.

To the outside world, Tori, Shane and Dustin have typical teen lives in Blue Bay Harbor: fun, friends, school and hanging out at Storm Chargers Action Sports store. Shane’s a skateboarder, Dustin races motocross, and Tori’s a beach-loving surfer. But they have one special thing in common - they are students at a secret Ninja school where, under the careful teachings of a wise Sensei, they’ve trained in the ancient ways of the Ninja. Before long, their world changes when Lothor, a Ninja master banished to space for his evil deeds, returns to Earth bent on revenge. During the confrontation between the evil Lothor and Sensei, the Sensei is magically turned into a guinea pig and now cannot turn himself back into a human. Left with no other choice, the Sensei must enlist the help of his less than perfect students. Sensei gives ‘morphers’ to the three kids that, when necessary, will transform them into superheroes.

But soon, this trio, now known as the Wind Power Rangers, faces a new threat: two former Ninja students from a rival school join forces with Lothor. The pair, known as the Thunder Rangers (Crimson Thunder and Navy Thunder), must somehow be convinced by the Wind Power Rangers to team with them and together -- as Power Rangers -- defeat Lothor. Later in the story, another powerful ally -- the Green Samurai Ranger -- emerges to help the Power Rangers in the ultimate battle of good versus evil. Until then, the Power Rangers must work with Sensei/guinea pig to ensure the safety of the Earth and keep their identities secret, all while keeping up with their own fast-paced, fun-filled young lives.

Starring are Pua Magasiva as Shane, the Red Power Ranger; Glenn McMillan as Dustin, the Yellow Power Ranger; Sally Martin as Tori, the Blue Power Ranger; Adam Tuominen as Hunter, the Crimson Power Ranger; Jorgito Vargas as Blake the Navy Power Ranger; and Jason Chan as Cam; Katrina Devine as Marah; Katrina Browne as Kapri; and Grant McFarland as Sensei.

"Power Rangers: Ninja Storm" is produced in studio and on location. It is from Village Roadshow KP Productions, Ltd.

Regular contributor and friend, Yukio Suzuki (The Dead Shot Club) recently attended the WPC2002 Computer show at the Tokyo International Exhibit Hall. There, Space Battleship Yamato creator/director (daft punk anime videos director) Reiji Matsumoto was present for the unveiling of Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3: Battle For Europe for which he a had a developement role. Mr. Matsumoto was responsible for the illustration of the poster of the game and later signed game T-shirts. Yukio mentions the design of the T-shirt is the same illustration as the poster. The signiture of Matsumoto is from a white marker. Since dye did not come out easily at first, the character of a sign has a thin color.

Yukio also captured several images which he has given ANS permision to run. A profile shot of the legendary director can be viewed here followed by one of the signed shirt an artwork here and finally an excellent image of Mr. Matsumoto at the signing here.

10-31-02---- Jackie Chan Reunites With Bronx Director

Action director Stanley Tong has been confirmed to helm Media Asia's big-budget film "Titanium Rain," starring Jackie Chan. This will mark the fourth time that Tong -- who made his Hollywood debut with 1997's "Mr. Magoo" -- has directed Chan. Tong's first collaboration with Chan was "Supercop," which also marked the return of Michelle Yeoh to the big screen after about five years away. Their second collaboration, "Rumble in the Bronx," has widely been credited as Chan's springboard into Hollywood. "Titanium Rain" has been pushed back several times because of the star's unavailability and the search for the right director. 10-31-02---- Cartoon Network Schedule Changes - Yugioh And Pokemon Added

Thanks to Grant for the following:

Source: Toonzone Forums

For the past month, Cartoon Network has been making major changes to their daily lineup. The latest schedule revision is no different, providing the addition of two new shows and the return of a cult favorite, all set to debut on Monday, November 4th.

Several blocks have been altered since our last schedule report. The changes are as follows (All times ET):

Weekday Mornings Get Loonier: Baby Looney Tunes and Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries will air two episodes back-to-back each. Baby Looney Tunes will air from 8:30 to 9:30, and Sylvester and Tweety will air from 9:30 to 10:30. Hamtaro will move to 10:30 am. This comes at the expense of Boomerang, which will now only air on the weekends, excluding Boomeraction in the afternoons.

Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh join Cartoon Network Primetime: Replacing Dexter's Laboratory and Johnny Bravo are two of Kids WB's greatest hits, Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh. They will air weeknights from 9:00 to 10:00 pm. They will also start from the very beginning, so Pokémon fans will want to have their VCRs ready.

The Brand New Midnight Run: After housing Dragonball Z for a year, The Midnight Run finally revises itself. At midnight is G Gundam, a show that had previously been removed from Toonami afternoons this month. At 12:30 am is the return and official Cartoon Network debut of the action-cartoon classic G.I. Joe, which had been tested in the summer and succeeded with flying colors.

Super Saturdays Make Room for Gundam: In addition to The Midnight Run, G Gundam will find another slot to rest for people who don't like staying up. From 2:00 to 3:00 pm, you'll be able to catch Domon, Rain, and the others with two back-to-back episodes.

10-31-02---- French Fans Get Spring And Chaos At 12th Annual Pour éveiller Les Regards

From the release:

TOKYOPOP® BRINGS FRENCH FANS A LITTLE SPRING AND CHAOS

Celebrated Animated Feature to Screen at the 12th “Pour éveiller les regards”Festival Los Angeles, CA (October 30, 2002) – TOKYOPOP® is thrilled to announce the screening of Spring and Chaos at the 12th Annual “Pour éveiller les regards”, one of France’s premiere film festivals dedicated to kids. Held in Aubervilliers from November 12-21, 2002, the festival will reach more than 10,000 children, with the goal of enriching the youth movie market by providing high quality programs. Its diversified fare includes fiction, anime, documentaries and shorts from both past and present, each chosen for its positive educational impact on children.

From renowned Director Shoji Kawamori (Visions of Escaflowne, Macross), Spring and Chaos is the animated biography of Kenji Miyazawa, one of Japan’s greatest modern poets and a man who has inspired generations with his illustrious imagination. Using both traditional and computer animation, Spring and Chaos takes viewers on a magical journey into the life and times of this remarkable man. “We are delighted to have Spring and Chaos included in this festival’s interesting programming,” said Sae Cibot, coordinator for Akata, a company instrumental in bridging the gap between Asian (mostly Japanese at the moment) and Western cultures (www.akata.fr). “This film captures Kenji Miyazawa’s life and imagination. As he has been a teacher and used to write stories mostly for children, I think kids will be touched by this animation and feel what kind of a person he was. The festival aims to give people new points of view. Spring and Chaos will bring out Kenji Miyazawa’s perspective through his particular sensitivity to nature.”

10-30-02---- Asian Cinema News

Eastday states Zhang Zhimou's Hero will be the Chinese entry for the Best Foreign Film Academy Award. The premiere of the film will begin December 19. (It should be noted that entries for Best Foreign Film and Best Animated Film have to be filed in by Nov. 1, according to oscars.org . Whether Spirited Away or Metropolis will make the roster for either category is anyone's guess.)

From the October 29 http://us.imdb.com/StudioBrief/ :

Sony CEO Nobuyuki Idei said during a visit to Beijing on Monday that his company plans to invest $100 million over the next three years in film productions in China. According to the English-language Shanghai Daily, Idei told Chinese officials that Sony will shoot an average of five movies a year in China. Reports were vague about whether the films would be home-grown or whether they would include location shooting for Hollywood blockbusters. Idei also remarked: "Our plan can also benefit the Chinese movie industry as we can help distribute Chinese movies in theaters throughout the world, taking advantages of Columbia Pictures' status as the world's leading movie studio."

10-30-02--- Battle Royale Novel Press

Outwit...Outlast...Outlive BATTLE ROYALE TRADE PAPERBACK NOVEL

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - October 28, 2002 - Viz Communications, Inc. today announced its February 2003 release of Battle Royale by Koushun Takami. A brutal, high-octane thriller, the novel touched a nerve in Japan where, like post-Columbine America, senseless youth violence dominated headlines. As a result, Battle Royale became a runaway best seller and is now available for the first time in English from Viz as a 504-page novel for only $15.95 USA ($26.50 CAN).

Told in breathless, blow-by-blow fashion, Battle Royale-a cross between the Survivor reality TV show and Stephen King's The Running Man-starts with an irresistible premise: each year, a randomly selected class of high school students is taken to a deserted island, where each is given a map, food, water and a weapon. As part of a ruthless authoritarian program, the students are required to wear special collars, which will explode when they break a rule, and are then forced to fight each other to the death for three days until only one survivor remains.

Criticized as exploitation and almost censored, Takami's novel actually furnishes a potent allegory of what it means to be young and survive in today's dog-eat-dog world. The novel was subsequently made into a highly controversial film of the same name, starring international action star "Beat" Takeshi Kitano and directed by Kinji Fukasaku (Tora! Tora! Tora!). Battle Royale is a relentless read, a contemporary Japanese pulp classic now available for the first time in English.

Battle Royale is Koushun Takami's first novel. Published in 1999 after it became a finalist for the Kadokawa Mystery Novel Prize, it sold more than 800,000 copies in Japan and became a social phenomenon. This edition of Battle Royale marks Takami's debut in English.

10-29-02---- ASian Cinema News

From Daniel:

1)Korean films continued to pull more than 40% of the domestic boxoffice for another quarter, further cementing the gains made in this unusually strong local industry. But unlike the past three years, 2002 has brought no single, overwhelming hits as there has been the past three years with films such as "Friend" ($44 million, 2001), "JSA" ($28 million, 2000) and "Shiri" ($29 million, 1999). Instead, the boxoffice has largely been driven by a steady stream of medium-sized hits and a major expansion in the number of films released overall. Already this year, all the top-10 Korean films have pulled in more than 1.3 million in admissions each; in 2001, the 10th-place film did not make it to 1 million.

2)Major Hong Kong production and distribution entity Media Asia Films is ready to roll out a slate of four films in the first half of 2003. Up next for the production outfit after the release of its forthcoming English-language actioner "Naked Weapon" and cop thriller "Infernal Affairs" in November and December, respectively, is a Chinese New Year offering tentatively titled "Cat & Mouse." The period comedy, starring Canto-pop heartthrob Andy Lau and award-winning actress Cecelia Cheung, is to be directed by Gordon Chan, who recently directed Emperor Multimedia Group's Jackie Chan action- thriller "Highbinders." Also in preparation is an untitled project by award-winning director Stanley Kwan, who recently created waves with his underground gay-themed "Lan Yu." The romantic comedy will star Hong Kong boxoffice queen Sammi Cheng and singer Leon Lai.

3)Michelle Yeoh is donning her actress-producer hat again for a stint as a female Robin Hood with a new film, "The Masked Crusader," to be directed by cinematographer-turned-director Jingle Ma. The $10 million film will be produced by Yeoh and partner Thomas Chung under the auspices of her company, Mythical Films, which is associated with Chung's Han Entertainment. Principal photography is expected to start in January in Hong Kong, China and Japan. "Masked Crusader" is based on the legendary Wong Ngung, who fought for justice for the underdog and was a popular subject of black-and-white films of the 1960s, with many of the top actresses of the time portraying her. This version, set in the year 2009, will be the first time a modern-day film has been made about her.

10-25-02---- Princess Blade Garners Critical Praise On Film Fest Circuit

From the release:

"PRINCESS BLADE" GARNERS CRITICAL PRAISE ON FALL FESTIVAL CIRCUIT

A LIVE-ACTION MARTIAL ARTS SPECTACULAR, WITH COMBAT STAGED BY LEGENDARY FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHER DONNIE YEN

HOUSTON, October 11, 2002-The long-awaited martial arts spectacular feature film "Princess Blade" (aka "Shurayukihime"), slated by ADV Films for U.S. theatrical release early in 2003, has been enthusiastically received by audiences and critics in festival screenings on three continents.

Production Credits "Princess Blade" is directed by Shinsuke Sato; special effects are by the renowned Shinji Higuchi (well-known for his work on the modern "Gamera" series). Hong Kong-native fight choreographer Donnie Yen (fresh from his acclaimed work on the Wesley Snipes blockbuster "Blade II") handles the balletic combat scenes.

"Princess Blade:" The Story The film, which combines elements of classic Japanese Samurai drama with a futuristic setting, tells the story of Princess Yuki (Japanese superstar actress Yumiko Shaku), of the House of Takemikazuchi-once a force of noble guards for the Mikado elite, but now an exiled and disgraced band of assassins, willing to take on any task for the right price.

Yuki is a ruthlessly efficient member of the clan, paid by the authoritarian government to eliminate members of a rebellious insurrectionist group. But when a mysterious stranger tells Yuki the truth about her mother's death-that she was killed by a member of the House of Takemikazuchi-Yuki confronts the killer and, after a fierce battle, is forced to flee. A troubled young man named Takashi (Hideaki Ito, one of Japan's most popular film actors) comes to her aid. But Takashi is wary, for he works with the rebels whom the Takemikazuchi have targeted for elimination.

Gradually, Yuki and Takashi come to terms with one another. But the threat of the Takemikazuchi looms-they will not tolerate the departure of one of their own, and they are closing in...

Festival Screenings (to date) "Princess Blade" has screened at the Berlin Film Festival, the Hong Kong Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Philly Fest of World Cinema (Philadelphia), Hamburg, Germany Festival; the Hawaii International Spring Festival, the San Francisco International Film Fest, Brooklyn International Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Seattle International Film Festival, Portland Japanese Currents, the Melbourne (Australia) International Film Festival, the Big Apple Anime Festival, the Helsinki Film Festival, the Denver International Film Festival and others.

Selected Critical Response Critics have praised "Princess Blade's" combination of beautifully choreographed fight scenes with engaging characterization and a gripping romantic subplot, and buzz around the title is growing as its theatrical release impends.

"I am not missing this screening." -Moriarty, Ain't it Cool News

"High-tech special effects and the action artistry of Donnie Yen unite with jawdropping results in this futuristic swordplay thriller..." -San Francisco International Film Festival

"A high-octane sword-wielding action thriller that is quietly effective, but has a solemn power that sets it apart from the pack... Sato has shaped an emotionally engrossing and admirably sincere revenge-tragedy deserving of comparison with the 60s-70s Japanese genre landmarks." -Travis Crawford (Philadelphia World Cinema).

"Pure unadulterated fun..." Hong Kong International Film Festival.

"This female revenge drama, beefed up with terrific action choreographed by Hong Kong specialist Donnie Yen, looks set to become a cult item." -Variety

"A raw and powerful stroke of style and conviction..." -J.D. Nguyen, Kung Fu Cinema

10-25-02---- Misc. Updates

Thanks to Daniel for these items:

From www.henshinonline.com:

1)With Ultraman finally back on television in the United States, fans are anxiously at the edge of their seats anticipating a big Ultra Boom, while at the same time, fearing a disappointing Ultra Bust. Any change in the way the program is presented generates all sorts of speculation and anxious hand-wringing. This is to be expected of a group of people who have waited so long for the return of their hero.

A mere four weeks after its initial premier, ULTRAMAN TIGA was changed from a twice a week schedule to a single episode each week, at a later time. Backroom whispers and internet posts that the sky is falling ensued, so Henshin! Online went right to the source, for the official explanation.

As reported earlier by Henshin! Online, the target audience for ULTRAMAN TIGA was initially the 6-9 year old age group. However, 4Kids has found that older viewers are tuning in. According to Colleen Nuskey, Marketing Director in charge of ULTRAMAN TIGA for 4Kids, "Ratings for ULTRAMAN TIGA have been fairly good, especially in light of the new Fox Box network. However, we've found that Ultraman has been skewing a bit on the older side and we feel that the 11:30am time slot is best for the Ultraman audience."

All of the shows in the Fox Box schedule are new and untested. 4Kids continues to try to find the right fit for each show. "The fact that Ultraman is currently only scheduled once a week instead of in the original two timeslots, is merely a programming change in an effort to see when and where the shows perform best." Colleen explains. "As with all networks, programming changes are common and we juggled our entire Saturday morning block - not just Ultraman".

Colleen promises that Henshni! Online will be updated of future changes. For now, the best way to support ULTRAMAN TIGA is to watch the show and get as many people as you can to do the same. 4Kids is committed to ULTRAMAN TIGA and is looking for the best fit for the show within their line-up.

Keep your eyes on Henshin! Online for the latest information and continue to support Ultraman as you've done in the past. Everything will be just fine...

10-24-02---- Spirited Away North American Marketing Criticized

Is Year's Best-Reviewed Film the Worst Marketed?

New York Daily News film critic Jack Mathews has chided Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook for rolling out Hayao Miyazaki's animated Spirited Away "as if it were some experimental gruel from Cremoria." Noting that the film received nearly unanimous rave reviews when it was released, Mathews asks in an "open letter" to Cook appearing in today's (Thursday) edition of the newspaper: "Why didn't you treat it like any other Disney animated feature, with a wide release and a big-bucks ad campaign?" Instead, Mathews noted, the film, which opened in 26 theaters on Sept. 20, is now showing on only 151. He concludes: "I hate to say it, Dick, but you had a tap-in putt here and you blew it."

The team boldly refuses to leave the mansion until Robert’s European team, the Majestics, agree to a final Beybattle. To teach his guests a lesson, Robert agrees to the final match at his new Olympia Coliseum. 10-23-02---- Tokyopop Announces New Manga Licenses

From the release:

Los Angeles, CA (October 23, 2002) - - Adding to an already impressive line-up of properties for 2003, leading U.S. manga publisher TOKYOPOP announces the acquisition of six new manga titles. G-Gundam, Gatekeepers, Scryed, RAVE, Jing: King of Bandits and Samurai Deeper Kyo offer a unique mix of science fiction and action/adventure that will grab the attention of America's rapidly growing population of teen male readers. Each of these titles has also spawned a successful anime series, and all have a built-in U.S. fanbase eagerly awaiting their debuts.

G-Gundam (Sci-Fi / Action) As seen on Cartoon Network's Toonami block weekday afternoons, G-Gundam tells the story of clashes between nations in a future century, settled not by war, but by organized tournaments between giant Mobile Fighters called Gundams. The highly popular series is a fun-filled blend of action, fantasy and science fiction, with plenty of giant robots and exhilarating battle scenes to captivate the imagination. Boasting multiple mega-selling toy lines, Gundam has become one of the most successful franchises in anime history.

Gatekeepers (Sci-Fi / Action) Imagine Men in Black meets Gundam, and you've got Gatekeepers. Written and illustrated by famed manga-ka Keiji Gotoh (Nadesico), this manga inspired Gonzo's anime of the same name, which is currently being released on DVD. The story: Invaders have infiltrated the Earth. Our only hope of stopping them lies in the hands of the Gatekeepers, who use their psychic powers as a last defense against a relentless force.

Scryed (Sci-Fi / Action) Written by Yosuke Kuroda and illustrated by Yasunari Toda, Scryed has been called the X-Men of manga. Its mesmerizing pace and twisting plot keep readers guessing and wanting more. The title's popularity as a manga turned it into an anime series, produced by Sunrise (Gundam, Cowboy Bebop). The story: When a new type of human -- Alter-Users -- becomes the center of an unexplained phenomenon, an elite squad of soldiers appears to keep the peace... or so it seems. This group, called HOLY, has many hidden motives. and, in this case, what the public doesn't know will hurt them.

RAVE (Action / Adventure) Fans of Dragonball Z are sure to enjoy this fast-paced adventure series from creator Hiro Mashima. A smashing success, the manga has been made into a top-rated anime on Japanese TV that will soon also debut in the States. The story: When the all-powerful Dark Bring awakens after a 50-year respite, it falls into the hands of the evil society Demon Card. The world's only hope is Haru, a young boy with a big sword who must collect the pieces of the RAVE stone to stop the darkness.

Jing: King of Bandits (Action / Adventure) Yuichi Kumakura's seminal manga series is a visual fantasy classic in the tradition of Alice in Wonderland, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Miyazaki's Spirited Away. The manga also inspired an anime series, currently airing in Japan and soon to release in the U.S. The story: In the life of Jing, the extraordinary is just another part of his normal day. A haunted ship with a living anchor, a speeding train run by a Dodo bird, a floating island ruled by a mask. just a few of the wild sights this master-thief encounters.

Samurai Deeper Kyo (Martial Arts / Adventure) Written by Akimine Kamijiyo, this is a historic adventure series in the spirit of Rurouni Kenshin. The manga's intense samurai fight sequences and compelling plot piqued the interest of Studio Deen (RAVE, Jing: King of Bandits), who adapted it into an anime for TV Tokyo. The story: Kyoshiro is a peaceful medicine peddler who harbors the soul of an assassin. Searching for his own identity, he accompanies a young bounty hunter across Japan in pursuit of a murderer.

10-21-02--- CPM Helping Kids To Read

From the release:Central Park Media Helping To Get Kids To Read Central Park Media steps up to the plate in the battle to get kids to read.

A John Glenn High School English teacher, Teri Poulos, was considering following a growing national trend and include graphic novels as part of her arsenal in the battle to get kids interested in reading. Where she would get more money for books in today's cash-strapped educational system was the question.

Poulos sent an email to Tim Altman, a Sales & Marketing Analyst for CPM, explaining the drive in education using graphic novels to promote reading with kids who might not otherwise pick up a book. Poulos also explained to Altman how cash-poor the local schools are and asked if he could help.

Within 24 hours Altman responded simply, "We'll send you some stuff." A few days later a box filled with various graphic novels arrived.

"This is simply amazing that a company so far from Ohio would recognize the need and respond," said Poulos. She added, "The best part is that students simply love them. They fly off the shelves."

Not only did Central Park Media send items such as their popular graphic novel series "Dark Angel" and "M.D. Geist," but they have also sent additional boxes of books for the kids proving their dedication to helping.

Some of the books will even find their way to the local Public Library in Cambridge, Ohio, which, coincidentally, is also trying to secure graphic novels for the very same reasons.

Mrs. Poulos said, "I can't thank Central Park enough. The graphic novels were devoured by my students." She continued, "I count books in the hands of kids as a success. The fact that a company like Central Park Media is willing to help me, help kids is an unexpected blessing."

The contribution made by CPM hasn't gone unnoticed in the surrounding Ohio communities. Five Ohio papers have so far run stories on the generosity of CPM and their gratitude for their help to students.

Local papers have also run stories on exactly what manga is, its origins and the medium in general which has created a surge on interest not only among students, but the schools and libraries throughout the area.

Poulos sums up, "Everyone here now knows what manga is from the old to young. When people here think of manga, they think of literature - not comic books."

NEW YORK – October 16, 2002 – The U.S. edition of SHONEN JUMP will launch its Issue #1 with an “ultra rare” Yu-Gi-Oh! card as a reward for early subscribers, it was announced today. Konami and Upper Deck, worldwide and U.S. producers respectively of the enormously popular Yu-Gi-Oh! card series, have agreed to provide a specially produced card that will be available in copies of U.S. SHONEN JUMP #1.

Company executives said that, beyond its rarity, the card will be tournament-legal for Yu-Gi-Oh! game competition.
