October 18, 2001 Los Angeles, CA - Kazuya Tsurumaki, director of the cutting-edge, Japanese animated mini-series FLCL (pronounced Fooly Cooly), will be making an appearance at the OmochaBox retail store on October 27th from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. to sign autographs.
FLCL is a psychedelic, surreal fantasy set in modern day Japan in a little town called Mabase where the life of pre-teen Naota is torn asunder by the outrageous alien Haruko and the flirtatious, picture of innocence Mamimi. However, Tsurumaki (Evangelion, Nadia of the Blue Water) tosses into this relatively innocuous premise large robots that spring forth from Naota’s head, secret agents that snoop around, lethal uzis battles, even more lethal Vespas, and a sophisticated satirical voice that ties everything together.
Autograph session line priority will be given to customers who purchase one of the many exciting FLCL products available at OmochaBox including FLCL artbooks (FLCLism and FLCL GroundWorks), action figures and more. Priority tickets will be distributed to customers starting October 19th. Only the first fifty customers will be guaranteed an autograph.

Based on the classic manga (comic) by Osamu Tezuka, the Godfather of Anime and Manga, METROPOLIS was brought to the screen by two of the most respected figures in Japanese animation today: Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and Rintaro (X, Galaxy Express 999). In fact, Rintaro began his career working for Tezuka on his popular Astro Boy (Tetsuwan Atom) television series.
In the late 1940s, long before Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion established Osamu Tezuka as one of the most influential animators of all time, the legendary illustrator created the classic manga Metropolis. Set in the future, Metropolis is a grand city-state populated by humans and robots, the cohabitants of a strictly segmented society. Amidst the chaos created by anti-robot factions, detective Shunsaku Ban and his sidekick Ken-ichi are searching for rebel scientist Dr. Laughton, to arrest him and seize his latest creation, Tima, a beautiful young girl. Tima is a new top-of the-line android created to succeed the leader of Metropolis. When they locate them, Shunsaku quickly comes to realize that the eccentric scientist is beyond their reach, protected by a powerful man and his fierce desire to reclaim a tragic figure from his past.
More than fifty years since it was first imagined, Tezuka's vision of the inability of scientific progress to fulfill basic human needs -- in spite of its mechanizing even the most fundamental aspects of life -- confirms him as a prophet as well as a fabulist. Directed by Rintaro and written by Otomo, the retro-futurism of the story - as well as its precautionary tale -- is spectacularly rendered in its visual style, combining the best in Japanese cel animation with the latest in digital technology. METROPOLIS has been selected to be shown at a number of international film festivals including Locarno, Sitges and Hamburg.

October 16, 2001 -- Omron Corporation (President and CEO: Yoshio Tateisi, Headquarters: Kyoto) will begin selling as a new product a cat type communication robot from November 20. Orders can be placed at Takashimaya (limited to 7 stores) starting October 17, and orders will be accepted by phone or over the Internet from November 3. Available in two colors, gray and brown, sales at this time will be restricted to 5,000 units.

Envisioning a society embodying a wide diversity of values, where everyone can live comfortably at peace (what Omron calls the Optimization Society), Omron sees the importance in the realization of a machine that can communicate with humans and understand them. A machine that is gentle to humans and responds appropriately to an individual's needs. Natural communication between humans and machines is made possible with the cat type communication robot NeCoRo.
Created with Omron's core sensing and control technology and artificial intelligence technology, NeCoRo realizes natural human to robot communication. Because of its ability to react to human movement and express its own emotions, people pour their affection into this robot and feel attached to it as they would a pet. By living with each other day after day, the person becomes at ease with the robot as it enriches the person's life.
NeCoRo, a robot with synthetic fur giving it a feline appearance, introduces communication in the form of playful, natural exchanges as between a person and a cat. Via internal sensors of touch, sound, sight, and orientation, human action/thoughts can be perceived, and feelings/wants are generated based on internal feelings. Using 15 actuators inside the body, it behaves in response to its feelings. It will get angry if someone is violent to it, and express satisfaction when stroked, cradled, and treated with lots of love. Based on its own physiological rhythms, it will express its desire to sleep or cuddle. Moreover, through a learning/growth function, while living with each other day after day, the cat will become attached to its owner and its personality will adjust to the owner. And as it begins to remember the sound of the owner's voice and its own name, it will recognize its name when called out by the owner.
Characteristics
1) Responds to human movement/emotions
2) Has feelings and desires, and its personality will adjust to its owner
3) Remembers its name and acknowledges its name when called
4) Synthetic fur gives it a feline appearance, so it feels natural to treat it like a cat, stroking and hugging it
Specifications Dimensions Outer dimensions : 260mm160mm320mm (excluding tail) Weight : 1.6 Kg (when battery is inserted) Fur material : Acrylic (gray or brown)
Sensing and recognition Tactile sensors are embedded in the head, chin and back, so it can recognize stroking and patting A microphone is in the head, so it can detect sound and recognize the source of the sound As it's name is called over and over it will remember its name and react when called Within its scope of vision, it can perceive the direction of moving objects An internal acceleration sensor allows it to know its position when cradled or spun around
Feeling generation mechanism Equipped with Omron's proprietary MaC (Mind and Consciousness) technology, feelings are generated according to recognition feedback, which is dependent on configurations based on psychological concepts, leading to cognitive decisions and actions determined by these feelings (applicable patent acquired) Feelings of satisfaction, anger, and uneasiness generated based on recognition feedback Desires to sleep or be cuddled generated according to physiological rhythms Via a learning function, personality traits such as selfishness and the need for attention will change in response to the owner Via a growth function, expressive patterns in reaction to the owner will increase
Actuators 4 legs (each with two degrees of freedom), tail with two degrees of freedom, neck with two degrees of freedom, and eyelids, ears, and a mouth each with one degree of freedom, for a total of 15 degrees of freedom. Equipped with many movement patterns and a voice speaker, 48 different cat sounds can be vocalized. New Anime Film Debuts In The U.S. On Video And DVD in Spring 2002
Long Beach, CA - Pioneer Entertainment announced today that Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers, Cape Fear) will voice the character Naomi Armitage in ARMITAGE Dual-Matrix, the highly-anticipated sequel to the popular ARMITAGE Poly Matrix, which has sold over a 150,000 units on home video. ARMITAGE Dual-Matrix will be available on VHS and DVD in Spring 2002.
In ARMITAGE Poly Matrix, the prequel, Naomi Armitage Asakura, an illegally created android that is more human than anything ever made, meets Ross Sylibus while working at the Martian Police Department (MPD). Ross was transferred from the Chicago Police Department after a robot killed his partner. Attracted by their mutual desire to fight against the Martian Government because of its initiatives to terminate "Third Robots," Naomi and Ross become partners.
Directed by Katsuhito Akiyama and created and character designed by Hiroyuki Ochi, ARMITAGE Dual-Matrix takes place six years after the first film. Naomi and Ross have changed their names and live with their daughter Yoko as a normal happy family on Mars until a robot riot breaks out at an anti-matter plant on Earth and Armitage learns that the riot is a plot to suppress evidence of illegal research and development of "Third Robots."
While Colonel Strings basks in the glow of his new-found fame for quelling the riot at the plant, the anti-robot movement is growing more active. Armitage decides to go to Earth alone to find out who is behind this plot, but what she discovers is the most powerful enemies she has yet encountered…replicas of herself.

The OAV of MAZINKAIZER was released on the 25th of last month in both DVD and VHS formats. This series, which brings the popular video game character of Mazinkaizer to life, is getting some good buzz. The story not only involves Mazinkaizer, but also the original MAZINGA Z and GREAT MAZINGA. The tone and style is very old-school, with all of the character designs being based on the ORIGINAL MANGAS. Everyone in the Mazinga family is here: Dr. Hell, Koji Kabuto, Boss Borott. Garada K7 even makes an appearance. This clarifies things about the SOUL OF CHOGOKIN line. Although the item after the GETTA ROBO series is a manga-style MZ, it's also now an OAV style as well. Perhaps it should be considered OAV style first, since this OAV is clearly why it was chosen. Assuming this new Mazinkaizer series is as good as it should be, expect a big run of toys from it.
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. and Honda Motor Co. announced Tuesday that they have developed an information system enabling drivers to exchange e-mail via a voice system and to listen to information about nearby restaurants/stores while driving. The two firms will finish developing the technology by next year and initially install the system in Honda's cars. When e-mail is delivered to the driver, the voice system will read the most important part of the message using pre-registered key words. The system connects vehicles and servers via a third-generation cellular phone network. Once information on restaurants/stores is stored on servers, pertinent information will be read out loud when the car approaches such locations.
I'm involved in the planning of an Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences tribute to anime, currently scheduled for Wednesday November 14th. More details to come, but I believe this event is the Academy's annual Mark Davis on Animation. The evening will include 35mm clips from some of the greatest anime films past and present - and a panel discussion. Panelists are still being finalized, but Katsuhiro Otomo (AKIRA) and Mark Dippe (director of the live action SPAWN) have confirmed their participation. The event will take place at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, 8949 Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills. I will post more details on this event in the next few weeks - but if you are interested in anime, mark your calendar now!
Our other confirmed guests at this time are: Bruce Lewis Brett Weaver Tiffany Grant Jessica Calvello Diana Sprinkle Joshua Lesnick
AnimeNation's Japanese suppliers have informed us that production of the 2002 Evangelion calendar has been canceled because there's no longer enough interest in the series in Japan to make a new Evangelion calendar marketable to Japanese consumers.
Bandai is planning a limited North American theatrical release of the Escaflowne feature film -- Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaea -- in January. A release in five cities is planned at this point: Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Vancouver. Retailers in those cities (or where consumers are exposed to the p.r. related to that release) can capitalize on consumer interest by selling the TV episode DVDs, currently available from Bandai. The DVD of the movie will probably be released next summer, around the time of Anime Expo.
the Japanese track on the region 2 dvd of Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust will be on the Region 1 version as well. Also, the administrator of the forum has made it a point to challenge naysayers who feel the film wasn't "meant" to be dubbed in English first, by stating that Kawijiri himself demanded it for the theatrical version.

Although Score has been selling its highly successful Dragon Ball Z CCG to mass merchants for some time, at the recent Retailer Summit in Las Vegas, ICv2 learned that that penetration will become much more visible in the coming months. Beginning in November, the Dragon Ball Z CCG will appear in end-caps at Walmart, the nation's largest retailer. Although a heavy presence in discount department stores has tended to sharply reduce sales in pop culture stores on some products (for example the Gundam models), Score is taking steps to differentiate the product sufficiently to make the pop culture stores continue to be an attractive channel. The DBZ CCG has been a consistent top seller in ICv2's Top 10 Cool Games lists (see "Top 10 Cool Games"), based on sales in pop culture stores, so there's a lot to protect in the existing channels.

I was at the orthodontist today, and saw jpop sensation Utada Hikaru on the cover of an issue of TIME magazine along with several other world music artists (including Bjork). The magazine actually has a full two-page spread all on her! I was completey amazed. The article spoke of her roots in New York, her attending Columbia University in upper Manhattan, and her recent collaboration with Foxy Brown. Definately a big surprise, I am still in shock!

The GIA is reporting via Famitsu that Atlus held a short press event at this weekend's Tokyo Game Show to give Cozy Okada, director of the Shin Megami Tensei series, the chance to talk about the franchise's first online outing, which was announced in August for Xbox. Though no concrete details were mentioned, Okada did state that the game would indeed have a single player, off-line mode. Whether this will be a separate off-line quest, or a single player version of the online game is unknown, but Okada stated that it is the company's aim to create a game that can be enjoyed in either mode -- though online play will be the focus of the game.
Other than that, Okada only mentioned that the game would feature all the signature MegaTen elements: conversations and negotiations with monsters, as well as the ability to capture them and fuse them into new creations. The game will also support realtime voice communications between players. Okada stressed that the game is only in the very early planning stages, so don't expect more in-depth details for quite a while.
Groove Adventure for PlayStation, a new action RPG based on the popular Japanese manga Rave. This game will feature 2D overhead view, colourful graphics and support up to 3 players simultaneously. From the screen shots, the game system is similar to Square's Seiken Densetsu series, in which you play as two original characters: Angela and Eason, you will meet and teamup with the Rave characters Elie, Musica and Puru. There is a new game system called RPD, in which you can give different commands to your partner during battles, and they will change their attack and defense pattern in real time.

Standing 7" tall, the figure comes with three variant heads, three sets of arms, and an arsenal of weapon accessories. This highly articulated work of toy art comes on original Japanese blister card packaging, and is scheduled to ship in February 2002.
