9-10-04---- Watsuki Collborates With Sega On New Shinsen Gumi Game
According to the upcoming issue of the manga weekly Shonen Jump, Sega's Red Entertainment division is developing a 3D swordfighting action game for the PlayStation 2, which will be based on the Shinsengumi, the real-life military group from Japan's late Edo period. Titled Shinsengumi Gunrou-den, the title's key selling point will be that manga artist Nobuhiro Watsuki, creator of the popular Rurouni Kenshin series, will be designing the characters. Rurouni Kenshin, sometimes retitled Samurai X in its US incarnations, revolves around the same historical events.
Fans of Watsuki's art will note that the character designs of Shinsengumi members in Shinsengumi Gunrou-den are different from those in the Rurouni Kenshin manga series. For example, while Okita Soushi appeared in Kenshin looking nearly childlike, he's depicted in Shinsengumi Gunrou-den as a young man.
Shinsengumi Gunrou-den is slated for release in December at the retail price of 7,140 yen ($65).

9-10-04---- Year Of The Ghost
Cult franchise staging a major comeback with a new movie, TV series, videogame, graphic novel, and DVD releases.
In 1995, writer/director Mamoru Oshii’s widely influential “Ghost In The Shell” burst onto the international film scene, introducing a new wave of Japanese animation through its mesmerizing cinematic expression. Seamlessly merging traditional cel animation with the latest computer graphic imagery, this stunning sci-fi spectacle broke through the boundaries of mainstream animation with its detailed artistic direction and uniquely intelligent story line.
Nine years later, “Ghost in the Shell” is about to take once again the world by storm with a movie sequel, TV series, graphic novel and several DVDs all debuting this Fall.
On September 17th, Go Fish Pictures, a division of DreamWorks Pictures, will release the long-awaited sequel “Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence” in theaters. Once again written and directed by Mamoru Oshii, “Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence”—the first anime ever to compete for the Cannes International Film Festival’s coveted Palme d’Or—is the story of a solitary cyborg who desperately wants to hold on to what’s left of his humanity in a world where the worth of the human soul is fading almost into obscurity. “Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence” will get the widest theatrical opening release ever in the United States for an adult-themed anime film.
Less than two weeks later, on September 28th, Manga Entertainment and Bandai Entertainment will release the second DVD volume of the highly anticipated anime series “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.” The series, which will be released bi-monthly on seven DVD volumes over the next year, was created by the revered animators at Japan’s Production I.G.—the team behind “Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence” and the anime segments in Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill Volume 1.”
Dark Horse Comics will also contribute to the “Ghost in the Shell” phenomenon with the October 6th release of the “Ghost in the Shell 2nd Edition” graphic novel. This new edition of the original “Ghost in the Shell” manga will be in the original Japanese size and feature additional material not published in previous U.S. editions. “Ghost in the Shell 2nd edition” will carry an 18+ age advisory and be shrink-wrapped.
A month later, in early November, the anime series “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex” will debut on Cartoon Network’s highly rated late-night Adult Swim. Set in the not-too-distant future when technology plays a key role in everyday human life, “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex” follows the adventures of the most popular female cyborg, Maj. Motoko Kusanagi, and her fellow police officers of Section 9.
November will also mark the launch of “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex” for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system. Developed by Cavia Inc., and published by Bandai America, this 3rd person shooter allows you to hack into your enemies’ minds, play as multiple characters from Ghost in the Shell, choose from 15 weapon types, select multiplayer combat for up to 4 players, and contains over 20 minutes of beautifully rendered CGI Ghost in the Shell FMV. This game is designed to appeal both to Ghost in the Shell fans as well as the most hardened gamer.
The year will end with a new beginning when, on December 7th, Manga Entertainment releases a Special Edition DVD of the movie that started it all. “Ghost in the Shell,” which was the first anime video to ever reach number one on the Billboard chart back in 1996 and has since sold over 1 million DVD and VHS units in the United States alone, will be re-released with enhanced audio/visual and language options in a feature-packed set that is sure to please even the most die-hard fans.
The future looks very bright for the “Ghost in the Shell” property, with the DVD release of the much-touted “Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence” following its theatrical release and the production of a second season of the “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex” TV series.

Set in the universe of the hit series Bubblegum Crisis-Tokyo 2040, Parasite Dolls is an erotic thriller focusing on the Branch, an elite team of police investigators charged with fighting corruption in a futuristic city whose population is split between human masters and artificial slaves called boomer. 9-9-04---- LavaMind Manga Contest
LavaMind is putting on a contest for aspiring magna artists of exceptional talent. Submit your original work and win a development deal with LavaMind.
According to LavaMind: "The difference between this contest and other contests out there is that we're interested in raw, unadulterated talent. We don't expect you to have a finished manga or be a polished professional. We're looking for that spark of brilliance that we can help to develop.
The other key difference is that we don't expect you to do it alone. Maybe you're talented at drawing characters but you cannot do scenery, or maybe your story telling skills aren't quite there yet. We're open to putting you together with other talented artists, story tellers, manga inkers, manga toners, and experienced producers so that together you can create something bigger and better than any of you could do on your own. This is what we call development.
The winners of the contest will be offered a development deal with LavaMind, where they will work as an extension of our company to produce a complete manga series. LavaMind will then work to license and distribute this series in as many countries around the world as possible. We believe in the creative process, and we hope to nurture the next generation of great American manga artists. To submit your original sample work to LavaMind, please go to the following web site:
http://www.lavamind.com/manga.html
Please do not email us any submissions. We only accept submissions that meet the guidelines outlined on our web site. Please follow the guidelines carefully.
We accept entries from any country in the world, as long as the artist can communicate clearly in English. The contest is ongoing. There will be four contests each year. The deadlines are the last day of every quarter (i.e. the last day of September, December, March and June). You can enter up to four times per year, but please don't submit the same material twice.
Thanks, and we look forward to hearing from you.

9-8-04---- Kadokawa Bets $100 Million On Dreamworks Stake To Lift Film Sales
Bloomberg has interview with Kadokawa Shoten President Tsuguhiko of Kadokawa Shoten. ``Being able to see what we're getting was our major reason to invest in DreamWorks,'' said Kadokawa, 61, whose company was Japan's fourth-biggest movie distributor by sales in 2003. ``The competition is so fierce that sellers have control and buyers have to take movies without screening them first,'' he said in an interview at the company's Tokyo headquarters. Japan's box-office and home-video market expanded 35 percent between 1999 and 2003. Kadokawa said the company's recent acquisitions will allow it to increase the number of films it distributes to 40 a year from 20.
In addition to the DreamWorks investment, Kadokawa bought a 43 percent stake in Nippon Herald Films Inc., a film distributor and movie-theater operator, in March for 3.05 billion yen. In November 2002, the company paid 1.5 billion yen for Daiei Pictures Inc., which owns a film studio and a library of 1,600 Japanese films including ``Rashomon'' by Academy Award-winning director Akira Kurosawa.
9-7-04---- Huge South Korean Comic / Animation Industry Revival Initiative Coming
The Korea Herald reports on the great revival of the Comic Book in the country. A year ago, at the opening ceremony of the Korea Culture and Content Agency (KOCCA), Professor Han Chang-wan of the Sejong University School of Cartoon and Animation presented an outlook and prescription.
"The future of the comics industry will depend on the success of its connection with other cultural industries. We must give cartoons bigger credit and a chance for them to spread their wings to movies, TV dramas, games and so on."
Last month, about a year after Han's comments, KOCCA held a conference and announced a new strategy called "One-Source Multi-Use" for developing the country's comics industry.
Park Sung-sik, the director of the KOCCA Cartoon Industry Department said, "With more than 10 comics being made into movies this year, we have realized that multi-using cartoons by joining them with other sectors is the best way to revive the slack comics industry." Many experts say that the domestic comic book industry must grow hand-in-hand with the movie and TV drama market for the current synergy to last.
Japan has more than 300 monthly comic magazines while Korea has only 13. At least 10 domestic cartoon magazines have stopped publishing during the last two years due to a lack of subscribers.
The small number of comic magazines here means a low output. Due to the deterioration in the market, cartoonists are leaving their jobs, creating a vicious circle.
"More comics must be produced in order to broaden the selection possibilities," said director Park Sung-sik.

HOUSTON, September 1, 2004— ADV Music invites you to sit back, relax and re-experience the excitement of Capcom®’s hit action game Onimusha 3: Demon Siege without the aggravation of having to use a controller! Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, the original soundtrack album, will be unleashed in a deluxe two disc CD compilation on September 28, 2004.
The Onimusha 3: Demon Siege original soundtrack gives listeners a chance to experience the time-spanning tale of this epic game through music. Onimusha 3: Demon Siege jumps between 14th century Japan and modern day Paris, France as the Onimusha, Samanosuke Akechi, and French solider Jacque Blanc battle the evil forces of the Demon Lord Nobunaga Oda across time. The story of these two warriors is recreated through music, from lush character theme songs to epic battle music. The compilation allows listeners to be exposed to two different eras of culture and time, the exotic simplicity of feudal Japan and the western hustle of modern France.
Akari Kaida, one of the many composers featured on this album, commented that “the biggest challenge for this project was determining how to reflect two backgrounds and two time periods in the background music, while giving the overwhelming number of pieces a feeling of unity. Japan and France. Past and future. Bringing these wildly different backgrounds together by using music. Combining the themes of two heroes and other unique characters, while at the same time, creating an atmosphere that matches each scene.”
